The piece of software is open source, while most of the code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, with select code licensed under the liberal MIT License. Transmission boasts a simple, intuitive interface designed to integrate tightly with any operating system. The program can be downloaded and used for free on any machine running Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later and is a Universal Binary, meaning both Intel and PowerPC Macs are supported. The latest version available, Transmission 1.74, adds better data recovery in the case of an OS or Transmission crash. Also on all platforms, a known issue exists â€" if a data file is moved, users are advised to stop the torrent instead of redownloading it.
