On October 22nd, 2009, Microsoft will reboot Windows. Next week, just five days from now, Windows 7 will hit store shelves worldwide. And yet, there already are millions of users currently running Windows 7, including the gold version of the operating system. For the early adopters that have embraced Windows 7 since before Milestone 3 approximately a year ago, through the Beta Build 7000 and Release Candidate (RC) Build 7100, and every other leaked interim development release of the OS, the Windows reboot has already taken place. A new apex of Windows is now booting on production environment computers on a daily basis, including a few of the machines I’m using. On October 22nd, 2009, Microsoft will reboot its operating system to the best Windows client the company has developed since MSDOS. Some might be fooled into thinking that Windows 7 was a less ambitious project than Vista, and only a minor upgrade. I disagree. To put it simply, Windows 7 is a result of realistic !
strategy, made public only in bite-size chunks with the tactic to underpromise and overdeliver. And make no mistake about it, Steven Sinofsky, now president, Windows and Windows Live Division, together with Jon DeVaan, senior vice president, Windows Core Operating System Division, and the thousands of developers on the Windows team, have indeed overdelivered.

Randy Pitchford, the leader of Gearbox, creator of Borderlands and a known straight talker, has recently commented that Steam, the digital distribution service created and maintained by Valve, could be a problem for smaller developers because of its potential to be a monopoly and because of the conflict of interest within the controlling company. He suggested that maybe Steam could be spun off to become an independent company. Immediately after, a host of small developers, from 2D Boy to Tripwire Interactive, creators of Red Orchestra and Killing Floor, which are Steam distributed, stepped up to say that the service is actually a great boon to their business, as it allows them to quickly reach players without dealing with the convoluted process of negotiating a distribution deal. Both sides have sensible arguments and the overall picture seems to show Valve as a company that maintains a clear separation between the side creating original games, like Half Life or Left 4 Dead, !
and the one handling digital distribution. But contrary to mainstream opinion, if anything, I would like Valve to use the leverage it has thanks to Steam to make some more changes to the way videogames are developed and distributed. For one, Steam should try to push down prices. Not for the small indie games that need all...

There's not really a lot you can say on Batman: Arkham Asylum that hasn't yet crossed the globe a few times. It is the best comic book-inspired video up to date â€" and even has a world record to prove it â€" and it's a very good game on its own as well. The title managed to combine the stealth and combat aspects very nicely, without making either of them seem out of place. You are Batman after all, so as long as they have nothing bigger than lead pipes, you can go toe to toe with an entire platoon. Give the psychos from Black Rock some guns and poor “Bat baby” ends up on the floor. Stealth is pretty basic and well thought of since there's little chance that anybody will look up at the gargoyles and spot the black cape wandering through the shadows. The game has its share of brain-teases as well, brought to you by the helping hand of The Riddler, but it's fun, challenging and even if the plot isn't that brilliant, it does have a bit of a twist by placing you in the !
Arkham loony bin. It can also pride itself with some nice graphics. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 look great, but the PC got something extra. Nvidia's PhysX makes the objects and textures look crispier and lights seem a lot more natural, not like a flashlight stuck somewhere in the wall. Shadows, smoke, and fog have d...

Another area where the company aims to make a difference is with its own services, which it has tried to make available to as many people as possible. It is now focusing those efforts with a new website, www.google.com/accessiblity, which will house all of Google's projects related to accessibility. “Information access is at the core of Google’s mission, which is why we work to make the world's content available to people with disabilities, such as blindness, visual impairment, color deficiency, deafness, hearing loss and limited dexterity. Online retail is already big business in the US and Amazon is by far the largest player in the market. Its recent foray into e-books has also proven quite profitable, creating a new market for e-books and e-book readers that is becoming hotly disputed. Now Wal-Mart, one of the largest brick-and-mortar retailers in the US, is going against Amazon on both fronts with huge discounts on 10 eagerly anticipated hardcover books including Stephen King's "Under the Dome" and Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" but the online retail giant isn't taking it sitting down. As Cnet reports, Wal-Mart recently dropped the prices on 10 books to just $10 on the company's online store Walmart.com. With hardcover books usually going for around $30 to $35, the discount is significant but the price point wasn't exactly random. $10 is what e-books on Amazon's Kindle store go for, and the digital alternatives are becoming a growing threat to good old-fashioned books. Wal-Mart doesn't have an e-book store !
at the moment so it had to fight back in the only way it could, with prices. Amazon though wasn't going to let it slide so it too dropped the prices on all 10 titles to the same $10 Wal-Mart was charging. Mobile phone maker Motorola is already known to plan on coming to the US market with a second Android-powered mobile phone, following the Motorola Cliq, which will soon come to T-Mobile and is already available for purchase in Europe as Motorola Dext, and now we learn that the handset might also come to the old continent in the near future. The device, dubbed Motorola Sholes (or Droid), has just made a short pit stop at FCC, bearing GSM connectivity. “This equipment is a GSM portable transceiver, which operates in the 850, 900,1800 and 1900 MHz PCS band. It also operates in WCDMA 900 and 2100 MHz and contains GPRS Class 12 and a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth function (Part 15.247). The unit may also be connected to a computer via a USB connection (Part 15 Class B Computing Device Peripheral),” is how the handset is described. Interestingly enough, it seems that Motorola has been trying to get the phone through FCC without people noticing it, and the filing shows the Sholes name!
only once. The Android handset, as many of you might already know, was already spotted at FCC a while ago, only that it sported support for CDMA frequencies at that time, unlike now, when it comes with GSM support. Microsoft's recent Patch Tuesday addressed a remote code execution vulnerability affecting the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) hosting process. Mozilla acted to protect its users by adding the Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in for Firefox to its blocklist, along with the .NET Framework Assistant extension. With Service Pack 1 update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, released back in August 2008, Microsoft also added ClickOnce support for Firefox in the form of a Firefox extension called Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant. A related Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in has also been installed in the browser to support other .NET Framework features. These two add-ons were installed surreptitiously at machine level, without the user's consent, an action that at the time enraged many security-conscious Firefox users. Wireless carrier Sprint put on sale not too long ago its first mobile phone powered by Google's Android operating system, the HTC Hero, becoming this way the second US carrier that has such a device available for its users. The Hero that came to Sprint is a different model than the one that went to the market around the world, as it does not feature the HTC Android chin we've already seen on other handsets, and has already proved to be a very attractive device. However, it seems that the phone also comes with an issue that makes it drain the life out of its battery very fast. The Hero that went to Sprint comes with a 1500 mAh battery, 150 mAh more than the GSM Hero, which should offer some extra operation time, since the connectivity to the CDMA network needs more power, yet it seems that the usage time with the Hero is still reduced. The issue is caused by a glitch in the HTC SMS app, which makes the device stay awake at all times, although the screen turns off. Accordin!

Music streaming is becoming increasingly popular at least with entrepreneurs and in some cases with the public as well. It's still as unprofitable and risky as ever but that doesn't seem to faze anyone. Spurred by Spotify's success, in terms of users not actual revenue, a number of music streaming services have popped up lately and the latest to join the party is a new project from well-known entrepreneurs and investors Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, originally titled Rdio, set to make its debut in the US early next year. The two have launched a series of very well-known, if not always successful, ventures starting with the infamous Kazaa peer-to-peer file sharing service. They went on to create the very popular VoIP service Skype, which they then sold to eBay for quite a bit of money though things are far from settled on that front. Their next startup, the web video service Joost, proved to be less successful and has pretty much closed down shop at this point. They're as !

Keeping in touch with landers, rovers and orbiters on the Red Planet is not as easy as it may seem. From time to time, the connection goes down for weeks, as the Sun moves in between the two planets, making any sort of radio communications impossible. When this is not the case, the star can still scramble or alter the signals considerably, leading to misinterpretation on one or both ends of the line. An expert from the European Space Agency (ESA), working together with colleagues in the United Kingdom, is now proposing a new method of keeping in touch with assets on Mars. The two main elements in the new idea are continuously-firing ion thrusters â€" of the type currently in use on ESA's GOCE satellite and NASA's Dawn probe, which is powered by three DS1 heritage xenon ion thrusters â€" and a new type of orbit. The latter will not be an “A Orbit,” of the type based on natural laws, but a “B Orbit,” which will absolutely need electric ion propulsion to compensate for !
the planet's gravitational pull. The peculiar orbit will take the pair of communication relay satellites making up the system very close to Mars' surface, and a constant force is required to keep them aloft. The goal of the new configuration is to break the limitations of natural “conjunction,” the phenomenon...

Labeled Mac OS X 10.6.2 Build 10C527f, the seed is said to contain only one known issue, as well as two sets of release notes, “an indicative sign of a possible release candidate,” World of Apple notes. As usual, the site was able to provide the seed notes for the 483.5MB build. At first glance, the update seems to provide reliability improvements limited to areas like iWork, iLife, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, MobileMe, iDisk, and Safari plug-ins. However, the update also fixes a glitch that could delete user data, an issue reported by numerous Snow Leopard users merely days after its public debut, and recently acknowledged by the Mac maker. The issue occurs when a user logs in and out of a guest account on a Snow Leopard machine. Apple mentions the rather important fix only at the!
last line of the seed notes. Full seed notes for Mac OS X 10.6.2 development Build 10C527f are available below, courtesy of the aforementioned web site. Softpedia won’t try to predict a release date for the new software update. However, Apple’s listing of few known issues generally indicates that develop...

HTTP:: Nicolas Cage Says Business Manager Responsible for Financial Ruin
--------
Hollywood A-lister Nicolas Cage, who made an estimated $40 million between June 2008 and June 2009, is in major debt. Court documents reveal he owes the IRS over $6 million in unpaid taxes, while also defaulting on a $2 million loan, as we also reported. Nevertheless, Cage is not bankrupt: he was simply ill advised by his business manager as he claims in documents surfaced on TMZ. The actor is taking his longtime business manager to court for bringing him on the verge of “financial ruin.” According to the papers just filed in court and posted on the celebrity gossip website / paparazzi agency, Cage was not even aware that he was in so much debt until he was summoned to court. He trusted his business manager altogether, which, together with the fact that he gave him very poor financial counseling throughout the years, put him in the awkward and embarrassing situation he is in now. Because of this, Cage is suing and asking for a minimum $20 million in damages. “Nicolas !
Cage, who has made untold millions over a long career, says his business manager has sent him ‘down a path toward financial ruin’ and he wants $20 million minimum to repair the damage. TMZ has obtained a copy of a lawsuit, filed in LA County Superior Court, in which Cage claims Samuel Levin &nd...

Moore's Law states that the number of transistors that fit on an average microprocessor will double in size every couple of years, and that the trend will at one point reach a limit that will no longer allow it to continue. Engineers are painfully aware of the fact that semiconductors such as silicon will eventually not be able to cope with the increasing demands of modern electronics, and that the materials and the very way a computer is structured will have to be changed. One of the best alternatives, and the one that is pursued the most, is that involving the creation of quantum computers. The chips that would power these computers would be extremely powerful, as they would not rely on the average physical concepts applicable at the macroscale, but on the exotic physics of the small â€" quantum mechanics. However, the exoticism of the theory also translates into exotic production processes, which have thus far been a great obstacle in the path of true innovation in the fi!
eld, experts say. Now, experts at the Ohio State University announce that the obstacle may have been overcome. They reveal the creation of a new method of producing quantum constructs with currently available technologies, though admittedly with a bit of a tweak. Their innovation could for example lead to the creation of high-resol...

--------
Experts at the University of Texas in Austin (UAT) have recently conducted a scientific experiment in what may very well be the world's smallest test tube, measuring less than one thousandth the width of a human hair, the scientists report. Because of the small size of the tube, the team could only observe what was going on inside using a high-power electron microscope, an observation device that is capable of producing magnifications of up to 1 million times.“The experiment is relatively simple. Essentially, we observe well-known phenomena, like melting, capillarity and diffusion, but at a much, much smaller scale than has been possible to see before,” UAT chemical engineer Brian Korgel explains. The investigation was conducted in his laboratory. The test tube was constructed entirely from a thin shell of carbon, and was stuffed with nanowires (thread-like crystals) of germanium, each of them with a small particle of gold at their tips.As the tube was heated, the gold !
at the end of the nanowires melted, as it would in larger test tubes, at the macroscale. This type of research, the scientists say, may in the future be used to gain a deeper understanding of the properties behind nanomaterials, and also to further existing or developing technologies considerably, through innovatio...

Beauty pageants include a swimsuit competition â€" that has always been a much-criticized fact about them. Things will change with the upcoming edition of the Miss California pageant, which will become the first not to include this competition in which all girls wear the same swimsuit, as The Desert Sun informs. The decision is meant to “modernize” the pageant and, at the same time, to make it more like high fashion, says the same publication. However, doing away with the identical swimsuit part of the pageant is not the only change that will be noticeable at next month’s edition, it has been announced. The trademark sashes will no longer be used from now on either (although it’s not known yet with what they will be replaced), while, this year, there will be two winners instead of just one. Eliminating the identical swimsuit competition is, though, the biggest change, although it will fail to finally put detractors, who have constantly been lamenting the objectific!
ation of women with such pageants, at ease, it is being said. “The swimsuit competition isn’t being eliminated. The swimsuit uniform is being eliminated. This year, we’re going to fashion accessorize each girl individually so it’s more of a fashion show. This year&rsqu...

--------
TLC, the network producing and airing the soon-to-be-defunct “Jon & Kate Plus 8” reality series, is taking Jon Gosselin to court for allegedly violating contractual obligations, Radar Online reports. The father of eight was bound to TLC by an exclusive contract, a contract that he violated the moment he started taking money from other networks and media outlets to speak of his marriage and the recently canceled reality show. Even when TLC announced that Jon would get less time in front of the camera due to recent developments (that is, Jon and Kate getting divorced), it also mentioned that he continued to be bound to the network until the show ended its run. Jon would be getting the same money, it was said, on the condition not to do other shows. However, he was not happy with this clause so, because he couldn’t talk his way out of the contract, he blocked production, saying the show was detrimental to his and Kate’s eight children. TLC is now saying in court !
papers Jon is lying about that too. “In a bombshell development, TLC announced Friday that it has filed a lawsuit against Jon Gosselin. The network is suing Jon for breach of contract, stemming from his actions of stopping production of Jon & Kate Plus 8. TLC says it has been trying privately and patiently for months t...

Despite a new-found wave of enthusiasm at MySpace, the social network's decline shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. News Corp., MySpace's parent company, isn't doing great financially either, so rumors that the companies are looking to get rid of Photobucket, the popular photo-sharing site acquired by MySpace in 2007, sound pretty solid. The buyer is apparently Ontela, a startup that enables users to upload the photos from their camera phones to their PC or a number of photo-hosting sites. All companies involved are staying quiet but, according to TechCrunch, Ontela is set to buy a majority stake in Photobucket and will likely integrate the photo-hosting site with its services. MySpace, or rather News Corp., acquired Photobucket two years ago for $250 million in a deal that made sense at the time as the photo-hosting site was serving a great deal of the media content on MySpace. The site was also flying high in terms of traffic though user numbers have been on somewha!

The company is looking to restrengthen its digital media arm, Fox Interactive Media, which is basically MySpace plus Photobucket, and the clear focus is on the s...

--------
Over the past week, debate has raged on whether or not scientific observations of the plume emitted by the Centaurus upper rocket stage upon slamming into the Moon last Friday will be visible or not. Some have argued that the calculations on which the mission was founded were flawed, while others said that the instruments aboard the $79-million Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) surely must have picked something up, and finding it was just a question of browsing available data. The latter group appears to have been correct in their arguments. Officials at the American space agency have just announced that the first images showing the debris plume ejected by the impacting upper stage have been found, and are currently being analyzed. The faint signature of the 3.7- to 5-mile (6- to 8-kilometer) tall ejecta has been detected by both of the spacecraft's mid-infrared (MIR) thermal cameras, its ultraviolet/visible and near infra-red spectrometer, as well a!
s its Visible Light Camera, Space reports. “The images of the floor of Cabeus are exciting. Being able to image the Centaur crater helps us reconstruct the impact process, which in turn helps us understand the observations of the flash and ejecta plume. Within the range of model predictions we made, the ejecta brightness appears to be at th...

Macaque monkeys revealed a new way of interpreting the origins of music and language when scientists discovered that, when the primates drum on trees or logs, the same neural network involved in communicating is activated. This find seems to suggest that, in primates, the vocal and nonvocal communication systems may have had a common origin, LiveScience reports. In nature, these monkeys drum either by shaking branches or by stomping on logs. The behavior is not unique to this species. Non-human primates have also been observed to drum in their natural environments, either on their own bodies (gorillas beat their chest and clap their hands), or on dead tree buttresses, like chimps do. Rhesus macaque monkeys maintain their habit in laboratory settings as well, using artificial objects to drum. For instance, cage doors are rattled or slammed against the walls, researchers report. “Monkeys respond to drumming sounds as they would to vocalizations. Hence, drumming originat!
ed as a form of expression or communication, possibly in an ancestral species common to apes and old-world monkeys, early during primate evolution,” says Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics researcher Christoph Kayser, from the Institute's headquarters in Tubingen, Germany. Details of the monkey study appear in the September 28...

We all use video and audio files every day. Some of us work with them, others just for fun. But, nevertheless, we all need tools to make these files smaller, in order to take them with us on our portable devices, or make a little space on the HD. There are many tools available that do just that, some free, some you have to pay for. Either you convert between a lot of formats or you do just some basic conversion, depending on which suits your needs best, sooner or later you’ll have to resort to such software. Flv Crunch is one of those free tools that allows you to convert various files to many formats, and does that in little time. Although the program also accepts audio input, its main focus remains the video files, and the amount of formats supported is pretty satisfying for most of the movie converting enthusiasts out there.   The Looks Flv Crunch has a pretty standard interface that just gives you access to the basic conversion operations. Some of you may say tha!
t it lacks a lot of customization options, or that it’s not too well organized, and you may be right. But since Flv Crunch is just a video converter, you must agree that what we get here is more than enough.

HTTP:: Twitter Launches Japan Version of Mobile Site
--------
The proof that Twitter is very serious about becoming a worldwide social networking platform, in case other evidence was needed, is that is has launched a Japanese customized mobile version of its website on Thursday. This move was not caused only by the fact that Japan represents “a leading edge, with advanced mobile usage,” as Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said, but also because more than two thirds of those who frequently access the Internet use their cell phones, while 8 million people use their handsets exclusively for web surfing. In other words, Twitter will not need to convince users of the advantages of mobile access and browsing, but of the benefits of its 'tweeting' platform. Most of the mobile access is achieved via WAP-like services (like NTT DoCoMo's I-mode) and the generic mobile site of Twitter would not display properly on some Japanese devices. The solution was to create and launch a brand-new site for Japan only.“I think the exciting things that you !
are going to see when everyone starts using it is that all the feature functionality that works on all the phones that everyone here in Japan has is totally accessible,” said Kevin Thau, director of mobile business development at Twitter. “Favoriting, at-replys, setting your preferences, on each and every one of t...
