HTTP:: Daily Housework Cuts Down Chances of Cancer
--------
Staying in the best physical condition possible is extremely beneficial for the health and overall wellbeing, as countless studies have shown throughout the years. However, staying fit also plays an important role in decreasing the chances of developing breast cancer, also known as women’s silent enemy. As a new study quoted by the Daily Mail says, doing physically stimulating chores around the house every single day past menopause decreases the chances of getting cancer. Women who do a fair amount of housework every day are 17 percent less exposed to the risk of breast cancer, as opposed to those ladies who rarely leave the sofa or spend their spare time in less-engaging activities, researchers have found. However, it seems a distinction must be made here in the degree of difficulty of the task performed, since only medium-intensity to vigorous chores will return results in terms of cutting down the chances of cancer. “But not any sort of exercise will do. Scientist!
s prescribe ‘moderate-to-vigorous’ activities such as heavy housework, gardening and hiking. Tennis, cycling, swimming, brisk walking and fast dancing, aerobics, and jogging also cut the mustard. But ‘light intensity’ pursuits such as bowling, table tennis, fishing, slow walking and light gardening do not ma...

HTTP:: Learn How Insects Smell
--------
Insects do not have a sense of smell per se, in the way we define it. They respond to chemicals in their environment like humans and higher mammals do, but are not equipped with a nose, nostrils, and smell receptors. Rather, a new study has revealed, they have specialized proteins that perform about the same role. The tiny molecules are located on their antennae, as evidenced by an investigation conducted on silkworm moths. These proteins make the insect sensible to pheromones, chemical triggers in its environment that have been proven to influence its behavior for a long time, the BBC News reports. The science team behind the new research used the United Kingdom-based Diamond Light Source synchrotron to resolve the structure of the tiny protein, which was the 100th analyzed at the facility. Experts from Rothamsted Research and the University of London collaborated for the investigation, which aims at discovering new ways of creating insect repellents and pest-control mec!
hanisms. The protein could only be deciphered at Diamond because the facility was able to generate intense electron beans that could probe structures down to their molecular level. Having studied the structure of the protein in great detail, the UK team was able to accurately determine the precise location at which the pheromone molecule binded to it. &ldqu...

HTTP:: New Sins of a Solar Empire Patch Aims to Rebalance the Game

Sins of a Solar Empire was a surprise hit and one of the best strategy titles of 2008. It managed to blend the familiar mechanics of exploration, expansion and extermination with a 3D engine capable of nicely rendering space battles that involved hundreds of fighters and dozens of capital ships. The game also offered a strong tech tree, some interesting piracy-oriented concepts and a small role playing element. And now, Ironclad, the developer, is announcing that it is preparing to release a new update for the game, which aims to fully rebalance it by making all the units interesting again, usable by the player in at least one tactical or strategic situation. As part of the process of balancing the videogame, the developers again went into multiplayer matches against as many players as possible to get a sense of the strategies used and of the way various units are employed. Their stated aim was to “make sure every unit is brought back into the pool of viable tools. In some !
cases this was as simple as modifying some data but in some cases we completely redesigned elements of them.”Ironclad says that this coming update is the 22nd it is offering for Sins of a Solar Empire and that it will not be the last. A new expansion for the game, called Diplomacy, set to be delivered ...

Facebook is now pretty much synonymous with social networking about all over the world. Sure, there are plenty of other social networks, some quite successful like MySpace, but nothing even comes close on the global scale. Still, Facebook isn't completely satisfied until it becomes the biggest social network in every single country and is launching an all-out campaign against Google's Orkut, which enjoys a significant following in Brazil and India. Orkut was originally launched in 2004 by a Google engineer as an independent project. The site started picking up steam and became mildly popular in the US but its users eventually started to drift towards MySpace or Friendster. At about the same time the social network became increasingly popular in Brazil to the point that eventually traffic in that country overtook the one coming from the US. Orkut is now the second most visited site in Brazil, and it gained a considerable audience in India as well, where it enjoys a rather !
comfortable lead. But if Facebook has its way, these two markets will be conquered much sooner than it may seem probable. In fact, Facebook has created a contact import tool specifically designed for Orkut users, similar to the tool most other users around the world get to look for friends from Gmail, AIM, Windows Live Messenger ...

A recently published report from StatCounter shows that Bing, the recently launched search / decision engine from Redmond-based software company Microsoft, has registered market share loss during September, both on the US market and globally. This is the first month during which Bing sees its market share fall, and StatCounter’s research arm Global Stats shows that the drop is quite significant, of more than one percentage point.According to the research firm, the search / decision engine from Microsoft registered a market share of 8.51 percent in September for the US, compared to 9.64 percent it accounted for in August. At the same time, the report from StatCounter also unveiled the fact that Yahoo!, Microsoft's new partner, has seen its market share going down as well, reaching 9.40 percent, compared to 10.50 percent it registered a month before.“The trend has been downwards for Bing since mid August,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “The wheels havenâ€!

Security researchers have discovered that the authors of a botnet send commands to the infected computers under their control through JPEG files. This new technique has the purpose of hiding the malicious traffic from network scanners. The method was discovered by Jason Milletary, a security researcher with Atlanta-based SecureWorks, while analyzing a botnet known as Monkif or DlKhora. The botnet serves as delivery channel for further malware.Malware delivery services are common on the black market and the providers charge a small fee for each computer infected with someone else's malware. The creators of this trojan downloader have a strong interest in keeping its operation under the radar and are therefore employing several detection evading techniques.Mr. Milletary notes that in addition to its ability to disable various antivirus and firewall solutions, this botnet client also hides its Internet traffic as a JPEG file transfer. The command and control server "sets the HT!
TP Content-Type header to 'image/jpeg' and prefaces the bot commands with a fake 32-byte JPEG header," the researcher explains.Once the malformed JPEG is downloaded to the computer, the bot isolates the header and begins decoding the rest of the response, which is XOR-encoded with a single byte of 0x4. The instruction...

Yahoo doesn't look like a fast moving tech company at the forefront of innovation but from a developers' point of view it's actually one of the most interesting and open large tech companies out there. And, among rumors that it wants to ditch the enterprise apps suite, the company has formally launched Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) 6.0, a major overhaul of the software. But the most interesting part is that the new suite is much more open to outside developers, a growing trend for Yahoo, thanks to the new Zimlets API. ZCS 6.0 is an open-source communications and collaboration suite that combines an email client with a fully featured calendar. The new version comes with several new features and improvements and introduces a three panel view, similar to the one in Yahoo Mail, and also tabs to make it easier to switch between the different components. Several other new features have been introduced, the top 300 most requested ones claims Yahoo, like a better spell checker!
and better file sharing but the biggest addition is the enhanced Zimlets platform. The new API platform allows third-party developers to create much more complex widgets to run inside the Zimbra suite and there are already a number of very interesting apps created for it. At an ancient port site, located just outside of the Italian capital city of Rome, archaeologists from the United Kingdom have discovered a new amphitheater, which they argue could have served ceremonial purposes. Roman emperors may have used the structure as a welcoming site, for foreign dignitaries traveling to the Empire. Leaders such as the emperors Trajan and Hadrian may have been at home in this amphitheater, the experts believe. Early studies indicate that more than 2,000 people could easily fit inside the structure, the BBC News reports. Other possible uses for the impressive site may have included gladiator fights, as well as animal baiting, the University of Southampton (USouthampton) team reveals. It was discovered inside a gigantic, imperial-style palace, located near the ancient harbor of Portus (Latin for port), some 20 miles (32 kilometers) away from Rome. The investigation team, which also included experts from the Cambridge University, spent more than two!
years at the site, and says that Portus deserves a lot more recognition and international attention than it's currently getting. Although the initial port was obviously on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, it is now located about two miles inland, next to the Fiumicino Airport. It was two times larger than the modern harbor serving South...

A team of German scientists has recently announced the development of a new, blood-analysis instrument, which is able to detect pathogens without the use of markers. The technology is very compact, and can be used in hospital settings, as well as in mobile transfusion units and blood-donation clinics. Results from the device are available within a few minutes, its developers say, and their level of accuracy is very high, according to AlphaGalileo. There are numerous situations in which the new device will make the difference between life or death. In Egypt, for example, healthcare experts routinely conduct blood-donation runs in towns and villages, where people are asked to give blood inside the lab bus. But the problem with this approach is that more than 25 percent of the harvested material is contaminated with pathogens that can trigger the development of conditions such as AIDS, syphilis and others. A fast, mobile analysis unit would help doctors screen out those with!
infections at a moment's notice, and only collect healthy blood. “Our consortium has developed a glass chip which has antibodies on it. Tiny surface oscillations are induced in the chip. If the relevant virus binds with an antibody, the oscillation changes,” Dr. Thomas Velten, who is a head of department at the Fraunhofer Inst...

HTTP:: NASA Is Running Low on Plutonium 238 Fuel
--------
The American space agency NASA usually makes use of solar panels for its exploration missions in the solar system, such as for instance on Mars, the Moon, Saturn, Mercury, Vesta, Ceres, and so on. But these explorations take place in the relative vicinity of the Sun, so the amount of electricity produced by the solar panels is sufficient for the small spacecraft. In the case of deep-space missions, however, things are a bit different. Freezing temperatures and the lack of sunlight mean that probes need to be fueled by plutonium-238, whose heat is converted into electricity aboard the probes. The latest, long-duration mission to Pluto, for instance, is powered by an ion thruster, but the technology is still relatively new and expensive to implement. At this point, plutonium-238 remains the only feasible option that combines the best of life span and costs. But, because the chemical isotope has been so extensively used, NASA is currently reaching the limits of its supplies. !
This type of plutonium is not to be mistaken for plutonium-239, which is the variety used to manufacture nuclear weapons. According to a new NPR report, the situation is growing increasingly critical, and its remedy lies with the Congress. If representatives approve the $30 million required to restart plutonium-238 production, then things ...

According to a new computer simulation of the conditions on the remote exoplanet COROT-7b, it may be that its atmosphere has nothing in common with our own. While we may be accustomed to rain, clouds, winds, fog and snow, we would have a very hard time finding these phenomena on another planet. COROT-7b was discovered early last year, in February, by the CoRoT space observatory, managed by the French and European space agencies (ESA). The models show that rain may exist in the planet's atmosphere, albeit not made out of water, but of small pebbles. Because the celestial body is located very close to its parent star, it is tidally locked with it. This means that it always has the same face pointed at it, regardless of its orbital position. For the sake of perspective, the Moon is also tidally locked with our planet. We always see the same face of the satellite, while another one remains perpetually obscured. In the case of COROT-7b, the face pointing towards the star is ex!
tremely hot, and this creates peculiar phenomena in the atmosphere, including the pebble rain. The mechanisms that lead to the formation of these structures are actually fairly straightforward, astrophysicists and planetary scientists say. The atmosphere itself contains the main ingredients that form rocks, and, when subjected to an incoming front...

HTTP:: Quantum Dots Get First Atomic Scale Map
--------
A team of physicists from the University of Michigan (UM) announce the creation of the world's first atomic-scale map of the promising quantum dots, semiconductors whose excitons are confined in all three spatial dimensions. Quantum dots potentially have the ability to influence a large number of production processes, such as those for transistors, solar cells, LEDs, and diode lasers, and may also be used as agents in medical imaging and for constructing quantum bits (qubits) in the future. The reason why the accomplishment is so important is because it opens the way to creating custom quantum dots, to be tailored and optimized to specific applications only. At this point, the same, generic type of QD is used in a wide array of electronics, which is not at all good, experts argue. In the latest experiments, the scientists looked to expand their knowledge on the semiconductor crystals, which all have ten to 50 atoms in diameter. By using a process called directed assembly, en!
gineers have now gained the ability to control the position of single atoms inside the clusters, essentially controlling the QD's properties.Although this process has been around for a while, progress using it has been slow, mostly because the lack of knowledge on the detailed structure of the clusters impeded an...

HTTP:: How the Brain Reacts to Fear
--------
It's common knowledge that the human brain features billions of neurons, all connected with each other via synapses and other channels. These connections are all related to everyday feelings, including one of the most powerful, fear. Studies on neural fear have usually focused on fear-conditioning experiments, but advancements in science have now made it possible to look deeper into the underlying mechanisms that dictate the feeling. For example, a new study focuses on using computational models of the brain to pinpoint how it reacts to fear, experts from the University of Missouri-Columbia report. Their report implies that the new type of investigation could be of great use for people suffering from the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as other similar conditions. In charge of the UMC team was electrical and computer engineering doctoral student Guoshi Li. Before this approach was taken, the expert argued that computer models were far more effective at studyi!
ng brain connections than any other method.“Computational models make it much easier to study the brain because they can effectively integrate different types of information related to a problem into a computational framework and analyze possible neural mechanisms from a systems perspective. Tori Spelling of the original “90210” fame has been admitted, sent home and then readmitted to the hospital after complaining of serious stomach pains that no doctor seems to be able to diagnose. Although she is in much pain, the star’s representative says fans should not be worried, as also does her husband, Dean McDermott, in a recent post on Twitter, as the New York Daily News can confirm. Dean accompanied Tori to the hospital on the first visit, when she had to be taken straight to the emergency room. He later Tweeted on her condition, informing fans that the star had come down with some sort of stomach virus that affected the entire family. Tori was soon sent home, where Dean Tweeted again on her condition, voicing his dissatisfaction with doctors’ inability to come up with a diagnosis. Shortly after, Tori was rushed to the hospital again, as the pain refused to subside. “A rep for the ‘Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood’ star confirmed the actress !

The US Department of Energy's (DOE) Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) has been the world's most powerful pulsed neutron-scattering science facility for a long time. Now, its role has been even further consolidated, when it has become the first such research institute to reach and exceed the one-megawatt mark. SNS engineers, from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), pushed the buttons past this critical level on September 18, as the neutron-scattering device prepared to begin its latest rounds of tests, EurekAlert reports. “The attainment of one megawatt in beam power symbolizes the advancement in analytical resources that are now available to the neutron scattering community through the SNS. This is a great achievement not only for DOE and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, but for the entire community of science,” the SNS project construction leader, Thom Mason, says of the landmark achievement. The expert is also the director of the ORNL. He highlights the fact that,!
before the SNS was built, spallation neutron sources around the globe only operated in the hundred-kilowatt range. According to its technical specifications, the SNS is theoretically able to reach as much as 1.4 megawatts in power. However, engineers decided not to push for optimum performances in one go, and take their ti...

Lourdes, the 12-year-old daughter of the Queen of Pop, Madonna, is no stranger to media attention, having grown up in the spotlight because of her famous mother. Initial reports said she was thinking of going into acting and was even taking classes for it. Lourdes seems to have finally decided that what she wants to do in life is to be an actress, as Madonna herself confirms in a recent interview with PopEater. Given that she’s been hounded by the paparazzi since she was still just a child, Lourdes is nowhere close to shy. As a matter of fact, Madonna says, a career in showbiz is what she wants and, what’s more important, she also has what it takes to make it. However, despite the so-called tradition of having children tread in their parents’ steps, Lourdes is not tempted by the idea of becoming a singer and has set her heart on acting and dancing, Madonna says. “She hangs out with the dancers a lot.” Madonna tells PopEater when asked how come Lourdes ended u!

Yesterday, NASA's MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging spacecraft (MESSENGER) did its third and final flyby of Mercury, before its 2011 orbital insertion date. During the approach, areas of the planet that had never before been imaged were analyzed, but the success of the mission was diminished by a small glitch the probe suffered while on approach. It may be that some images were lost, or never taken, and mission controllers are unsure if any photographs were snapped as the craft flew away from the innermost planet, Space reports. The lowest point in MESSENGER's flight was achieved shortly before 5:55 pm EDT (2155 GMT). The craft flew about 228 kilometers (141 miles) above the surface of the planet, and it has already sent back some pictures it took during the approach. In addition to being the final observation run above the planet, yesterday's event was also an elegant gravity assist maneuver that set the probe on the correct path to orbital ins!
ertion. After it makes a few more rounds around the Sun, the device will be captured in Mercury's orbit starting with 2011, and will begin to make constant, scientific observations of the surface. “We do have some new science from the flyby. Japanese-Swedish phone maker Sony Ericsson will pack its future handsets with the Flexion technology from Accumulate UK, according to a global licensing deal the two companies signed and announced recently. According to Accumulate UK, Sony Ericsson becomes this way the first handset vendor around the world to include mobile games with Flexion on new mobile phones, based on the success Hutchison 3G UK has had. As many of you might already know, it was only recently that mobile phones started to come to the market with pre-loaded games. Games are now seen as a necessary component of any mobile phone, yet they were only considered a means of cheering oneself up before. Full versions of games were present on handsets previously only after phone makers paid publishers license fees for them. However, Accumulate UK's Flexion technology is meant to transform the costs handset makers register for having full game versions pre-loaded on their devices into a revenue stream. What it!
is meant to do is to make users curious about the content on their devices and allow them to try out games before they purchase them, while also offering them 'rent for the day' or 'have-a-go for 25p' options, the company states. “We are delighted that Sony Ericsson has taken this step together with us. TLC fired Jon Gosselin from his own show, “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” partly because of the hit ratings he took as he stopped caring about his image in the media, and partly because the public had grown tired of him, since he proved to be the contrary of what audiences initially made of him. HTTP:: Earthquakes Affect Fault Lines Across the Planet
--------
The commonly accepted model of our planet states that the thick core is surrounded by a massive layer of magma known as the mantle, on which the tectonic plates that make up the crust float. When these plates meet, in areas known as fault lines, they collide against each other. When these collisions are delayed, tension begins to build up. Eventually, when the right trigger appears, that tension is released as an earthquake, and the plates fall into place. A new study shows that the shock waves thus generated can directly influence fault lines on the other side of the planet, Nature News reports. The find is very important, as it holds the key to explaining why certain renowned fault lines, which exist in highly urbanized areas, may change their properties from one day to the next, and become active in periods when they should theoretically be dormant. Tectonic plates usually stop moving when they begin to grind to each other and become stuck. Seeing how they are pushed b!
y other plates coming after them, they tend to eliminate all the obstacles that prevent them from gliding on top of each other. When the obstacle snaps, the ensuing shock waves travel through the ground at high speeds. The new study was conducted on seismic data on the famous San Andreas Fault, on the West Coast of the United States,...

In 1988, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) astrophysicist Jack Hills used the theory of gravity to calculate the existence of a peculiar class of stars, whose members traveled faster than the galactic escape velocity. His calculations were inferred from a theoretical model in which a binary star system passed very close to a black hole. The simulation showed that, while one of the stars was trapped in orbit, the other was thrown away at high velocities thorough the Universe. Astronomers had up to that point never observed such stars, but, after the theoretical model was ready, and they knew what they were looking for, they started spotting the runaway celestial bodies, traveling at incredibly large speeds. According to Hills' theory, these stars should move by at least 1,000 kilometers per second faster than the Milky Way's rest frame. Of all the stars classified as runaways, only HD 271791 allowed for most of its properties to be measured. It has about 11 times the ma!
