At the start of this week, Microsoft launched a new project designed to open up web applications and social networking websites normally reserved for smartphone users to owners of feature phones. Concomitantly with the introduction of OneApp, Microsoft also announced the first partnership, indicating that Blue Label Telecoms of South Africa was considered the launch partner for the new technology. The Redmond company noted that for the time being OneApp was available to feature phone users in South Africa, exclusively to Blue Label Telecoms’ mibli service. However, the service will be opened up to additional users in third world markets, although this will only happen starting with 2010. “We believe mobile technology plays a pivotal role in addressing people’s everyday needs and creating new opportunities for local industry to grow.
