I like playing Batman: Arkham Asylum. It manages to blend intense action, some stealth elements and elements of adventure games in a coherent way while also staying true to what Batman, his nemesis and the Arkham location mean in the universe of comics.Rocksteady has delivered a solid game with easy-to-understand controls, fluid combat, nice grappling movement and challenging boss fights. The only thing I hate about Batman: Arkham Asylum is the amount of collectibles it puts in the patch of the player, from Riddler signs to audiotapes detailing the treatment attempted for major villains in the universe of the game and to the signs that show the history of Arkham itself.Like many other gamers, I'm a bit of a masochist and compulsive when it comes to collecting stuff. I went after all the weird weapon pieces that can be put together as far back as Baldur's Gate II. I was obsessing after Gold Coins as far back as my first Mario experience with the SEGA Mega Drive. I was very c!
oncerned with picking up special power bottles in Golden Axe at the arcades. So, for me, Batman: Arkham Asylum is especially hard because it allows you to get your hands on so much extra stuff and much of it is placed outside of where the actual action takes place. As soon as I enter an area and get the Riddler clue for t...

HTTP:: Julian Hakes Mojito Shoe Takes Minimalist Design to New Heights
--------
Household designers are constantly working on ideas to further make shoes more visually appealing, adding to them anything from straps and spikes to feathers and rhinestones. In doing so, they’re looking at footwear from the outside in, whereas British architect Julian Hakes is doing it the other way around. Because of this, the Mojito, Hakes’ design, looks stunning, but without giving up on comfort, he says for the Daily Mail. Hakes is an architect and, because of this, when he first set out to design a pair of shoes, he looked at the way the foot moved when walking and which were the points on which the most pressure was applied. Of course, those are the heel and the ball of the foot, which has driven him to the conclusion that a foot plate for a shoe is not necessary. Consequently, he took that out â€" and the result is this piece of futuristic, minimalist, funky-looking material, the Mojito shoe. The Mojito is called like that because it resembles the twisted pie!
ce of lime served in a glass of the Mojito cocktail. It’s made of rubber, leather and carbon fiber to create the impression that the woman wearing it is actually walking on air. This particular-looking shoe â€" a high-heeled one, nonetheless â€" offers the most support for the heel and the ball...

September saw a number of interesting shifts in the browser market with IE plummeting to 65.7 percent, its lowest percentage since Netscape was still a viable option, dropping 1.3 percent in just one month. The decline is also one of the biggest drops in over a year. Meanwhile, Firefox had one of the best months in recent history and Google Chrome saw strong growth considering its very small market share, according to data gathered by Computer World. Microsoft's Internet Explorer has been on a downward spiral for many months now and lost 8.5 percent market share in the past year alone. Moreover, the trend seems to be accelerating with a 2.6 percent drop in the past three months and now with significant 1.3 percent dip in September. The browser still enjoys a significant lead and its 65.7 percent combined market share is almost three times bigger than its closest follower Mozilla Firefox. Still, if the trend does continue, Firefox may become a viable contender for the first !

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced not too long ago the release of its first handset running under the Linux-based Maemo 5 platform, the Nokia N900, and it seems that it might push the device on the market by the end of October, the latest news around the Internet suggests. One of the main features of the fresh handheld would be its Internet capability, enhanced by the presence of Nokia's Maemo operating system. According to a recent article on gsmhelpdesk, the Nokia N900 is set to make an appearance on the market at the end of October, while featuring a price tag of €599. The high-end N900, which comes as a device placed somewhere between a tablet PC and a smartphone, comes with a wide range of capabilities, and is expected to see a lot of traction on the market, although its price might be as high as stated above. At the core of N900 lies an ARM 600 MHz processor, which enables the device to deliver multi-tasking functionalities to users. At the same time, the O!
S also helps it deliver nice speeds even when multiple applications are running on it. The connectivity options included with the handset are also attractive, and we can count here Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM, UMTS and HSPDA. James Arkwright, from Morecambe, in Lancashire, the UK, has just secured his place in a prestigious international space competition, as he developed a rocket motor that can be fired safely, and observed from close range. The 25-year-old developed the educational tool as part of his university degree, and is now being asked to present his device in front of world-class scientists, at the International Astronautical Congress, to be held later this month in South Korea, AlphaGalileo reports. The new motor is only half a meter tall, and is also portable. James developed it after studying aerospace engineering and astronautics for the past five years, at the Kingston University, in South West London. Experts believe that the instrument could be successfully used as an educational tool, to help students, academics and researchers in their quest for obtaining a deeper understanding of the mechanics involved in constructing a rocket.Made entirely out of the carbon compound graphite!
, steel and acrylic, the motor can demonstrate to students (from school age to degree level), how fuel is burned inside the combustion chamber. The tool also allows the lookers to observe this phenomenon at close quarters, without the need for computer simulation. The viewers can experience first-hand the path that the fuel takes from the tan...

Experts at the University College London (UCL), in the United Kingdom were following a recent study able to conclude that brain waves have a significant influence on human behavior. In a series of tests, they attached a number of electrodes on volunteers' heads, and then ran a small alternating current through them. In a paper detailing the experiments, published in the latest issue of the journal Cell Biology, the team reveals that such research could unlock new avenues of research for curing movement disorders, such as Parkinson's. In such diseases, patients have a difficult time making voluntary movements, but the British team says that they managed to generate normal brain activity patterns in test subjects. “We induced the same patterns as you see in normal brains via electrodes,” explains UCL professor Peter Brown, who was also the lead author of the journal entry. His work was focused on learning how to boost the activity of a specific type of brain wave, called !
the beta oscillation, the BBC News informs. “Different parts of the brain work together and generate certain frequencies, and the movement areas of the brain come together in beta activity. That activity is suppressed just prior to and during movement, so we think the body gets rid of it to prepare to make a new movement,&rd...

It didn't take too long before Palm came back with a software update for its webOS mobile operating system running on Palm Pre to enable the handset to connect back with Apple's iTunes. Although USB-IF said that Palm should be careful with the way in which it uses Apple's vendor ID to enable the iTunes syncing, it seems that the Sunnyvale-based mobile phone maker decided to re-enter the cat-and-mouse game it has been playing with Apple during the past four months or so. The company has just released the webOS 1.2.1 update for all Palm Pres available on the market, and, beside other changes and fixes it brings along, the release note also clearly states, “Resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes (9.0.1).” Since the game is back on, although one would have expected for Palm to lay low, especially since webOS 1.2.0 didn't “fix the iTunes issue,” it remains to be seen how Apple will respond, and what other forums will have to sa!

In the meantime, we should mention that the new software update for the Palm Pre also comes with a fix for an issue with Exchange 2007 that prevented users from synchronizing “with their Exchange account for Email, Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks.” The problem first appeared after webOS 1.2.0 ...

The human brain is arguably the most complex natural system in the world today. After millions of years of evolution, it grew to an impressive average size, and encompasses billions of neurons, tied together via a massive number of synaptic connections. Understanding how it functions is one of mankind's greatest pursuits, but the complexity of the organ makes attempts at deciphering its underlying mechanisms futile. Before advanced studies can be performed, experts first need to get a grip on how its basic unit, the neuron, functions, right down to the protein level.Proteins, for example, play a huge role in changing a neuron's voltage, which is of paramount importance in electrical signal transmission. These electrical signals are what drive our thoughts, memories, association patterns, logic and movements, and they are constantly being transmitted through neural networks, several million times per second. Understanding the neuron in itself, as the basic component of the c!

A new effort to decipher neural actions recently began at the Northwestern University. The inter-disciplinary partnership is led by NU McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science professor of engineering sciences and applied mathematics Bill Kath, working together with colleague N...

In the first century AD, the Roman empire was led by Emperor Nero, also known as Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (15 December 37 â€" 9 June 68). He was the fifth and last Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, and also one of the most brutal and extravagant rulers the empire ever had. He committed suicide by driving a dagger through his throat, after the Senate had declared him a public enemy. Upon his death, most statues of him were destroyed. Now, experts at the Bournemouth University and the Fishbourne Roman Palace are planning to use 21st century technology to determine if an incomplete statue they have is indeed Nero's, as speculated. The statue head is one of a youngster, previous studies determined, and the scientists are currently trying to determine if it's a depiction of emperor Nero as a child. They plan to run 3D laser scans on the artifact, in an attempt to recreate the damaged parts of the sculpture. This will hopefully reveal the identity of th!

In a groundbreaking new study that may change the way radio signals are bounced around the world in communications networks, experts managed to create an artificial ionosphere patch in the sky, by shooting powerful radio waves into the air. The “original” ionosphere is the uppermost portion of the Earth's atmosphere, and it plays an essential role in keeping harmful radiations at bay, by slowing them down and breaking them apart with the ions it contains. It is also the innermost edge of magnetosphere, the atmospheric layer that protects us from solar radiation, and allows for life to go on.The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), near Gakona, Alaska, is the project responsible for the new achievement. It has been probing the planet's magnetic field and ionosphere for more than twenty years, and one of its greatest accomplishments is that it can generate artificial auroras in the sky. After more than 10 years of arduous debate in the international scientific community as to whether gas and liquids can exhibit magnetic properties, and become ferromagnets, an international collaboration has brought the final arguments to the table. The scientists involved in the new research managed to observed magnetic behavior in an atomic gas for the first time, essentially settling this issue. The lithium-atom gas was trapped in the focus of an infrared laser beam at the time of the study.“Magnets are all around us â€" holding postcards on the refrigerator, pointing to magnetic north on a compass, and in speakers and headphones â€" yet some mysteries remain. We have perhaps found the simplest situation in which permanent magnetism can exist,” explains University of Toronto professor of physics Joseph H. Thywissen. In a study that could change the way planetary scientists look at rocks forever, French researchers recently reported, in the September issue of the journal Geobiology, that they discovered how microorganisms become fossils in laboratory conditions. This may provide geologists with leads into understanding how microbes or bacteria may have been stored inside Martian rocks, for example. However, at this point, there is still no way to extract the remains of these organisms, if they exist at all, from the rocks, unless larger, fossilized colonies are discovered. The study could have implications for the rocks on our planet as well, Space reports. “Environmental conditions were similar on the young terrestrial planets and traces of early Martian life may have been similarly preserved as silicified microfossils,” the authors write in their journal entry. The study focused on examining the fossilization process of Pyrococcus abyssi (PA) and Methanocaldococcus jannaschii (MJ)!

Some science-fiction novels may have got it right. Space lanes, as envisioned in Edmond Hamilton's 1928 classic Crashing Suns, may indeed exist, and they may be connecting all the most important bodies in the solar system. These corridors are best described as low-speed, fuel-efficient pathways of traveling from one planet to another, for example, while making use of Lagrangian points. These are positions in an orbital configuration, where an object, such as a satellite, remains in the same relative position to a system. For example, the Earth and the Moon for a system. In this system, there are five points that always remain in the same relative position in respect to the two bodies. This work, by Italian-French mathematician Joseph Louis Lagrange, is instrumental for allowing the launch of highly precise telescopes today. The European Space Agency's (ESA) Herschel and Planck are both on an orbit around the Sun, but remain in the same position relative to the star, Earth an!
d the Moon at all times. The new gravitational corridor idea holds that the most efficient method of traveling between two planets in the solar system is not necessarily the fastest. It may be, physicists reveal, that traveling between Lagrangian points surrounding various planets, asteroids and comets, is the most fuel-efficient ...

The latest security solution released for end-users from Microsoft comes in the form of a free anti-virus / anti-spyware / anti-malware software, called Microsoft Security Essentials. The solution is aimed at those users who either cannot afford to purchase paid anti-virus software or do not want to do so and owners of any Windows XP (SP2 and SP3), Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit) can enjoy the application for free. With great emphasis on owners, as those who run pirated versions of these platforms will not have access to the MSE. “During installation, you’ll be asked to validate Windows running on your PC to make sure that it’s genuine. As with all of our validation technology Microsoft doesn’t use any information collected during validation about the copy of Windows that is installed or the PC it is installed on to identify or contact the owner or user. If a copy of Windows fails validation during setup then [...] the user will be offered an easy way to!
purchase genuine Windows directly from Microsoft,”Microsoft's Alex Kochis notes on the Genuine Windows Blog. Take a look at the screens attached to this article to make an idea of what that means. The software giant is known to block pirates from downloading certain software solutions it makes availab...

--------
For all its massive size, our galaxy, the Milky Way, is a bit slow when it comes to forming new stars. This is not the case with other large galaxies, which produce young, blue suns at very high rates. These areas of intense star production, known as stellar nurseries, have long been associated with radiation, and a recent investigation â€" conducted using the H.E.S.S. telescopes, shows that large amounts of gamma rays are emitted from within these structures. The recent measurements were conducted on the galaxy NGC 253, which is closely outside our own Local Group. The reason why stellar nurseries emit this high-energy radiation has remained a mystery for quite some time, but astrophysicists have eventually figured it out. They have determined that, for the large number of stars that is created within the gas clouds, an equally large number of old stars dies. Some of these stars explode into supernovae, modifying the structure of the gas around them. But the catch is that !
these remnants in essence act like particle accelerators, forcing elementary particles to move at increasingly high speeds, until their energy reaches the gamma-ray wavelentgh. The research, which is detailed in the September issue of the journal Science Express, also shows that the high-energy rad...

Producing the neurotransmitter dopamine outside the brain is one of the main goals in medicine today, but devising setups for this, as in creating dopamine-producing neurons, has proven to be extremely difficult. Now, this goal may be one step closer to reality, thanks to a new study by experts at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet. They've shown in a study on mice that the cholesterol derivate oxysterol is of great importance for promoting neuron growth, AlphaGalileo reports. In charge of the investigation has been Professor Ernest Arenas. Details of the investigation appear in the latest issue of the scientific journal Stem Cell. The main highlight is that the development of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain of mice is boosted by the activation of a specific receptor in the brain. This receptor responds to oxysterol, which is an oxidized form of cholesterol. This type of neurons is extremely important for the brain of humans and other animals, as!
it plays an essential role in many functions and processes, including motor skills, reward systems, and dependency. “Oxysterol contributes to a safer and better cultivation of dopamine-producing cells, which is a great advancement since it increases the possibility of developing new treatments for Parkinson's disease,” the expert ...

The probes, orbiters and rovers that currently explore the recesses of the solar system and beyond are only crude efforts in mankind's quest to explore the Universe. These robots currently come at very high costs, are relatively fragile, and only carry limited amounts of scientific equipment. But, in the future, space exploration will be conducted with formations of spacecraft, flying at predefined distances from each other, and in essence acting like a single, gigantic sensor. These probes will need to be able to maintain the established distance no matter what, and a new report shows that femtosecond lasers are the way this can be achieved. According to the paper, which was designed by experts at the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for the European Space Agency (ESA), femtosecond comb lasers are the best, most effective way of conducting the highly precise measurements required to keep the elements of a free-flying spacecraft formation in the same relative position !
in regards to each other. A femtosecond is an extremely small unit of time, equivalent to one billionth of one millionth of a second. Because countless measurements can be conducted within a very short period of time, the distance between spacecraft could be accurately assessed, leaving only a few microns for ...

British moto insurer Diamond has revealed the figures behind a recent survey among female motorists and they are nothing short of troubling. As it turns out, an estimated one in five women drivers admits to retouching their makeup on the go, when they’re behind the wheel, which translates into half a million crashes caused by them on the roads in the UK, The Telegraph informs. As a rule, women have quite a reputation for being able to do more things at once, as opposed to their male counterparts, who, most of the time, can only concentrate on the task at hand. However, when it comes to driving, women should not even consider attempting doing something else and thus avoid risking their own life, as well as those of other drivers, for nothing, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warns in light of the recent numbers uncovered. “Around one fifth of female motorists confess they have touched up their mascara on the move â€" equivalent to 2.7 million of Britai!

Twenty-seven per cent confessed to putting on make-up and nine per cent of those aged 18 or younger have had a crash while doing so â€" three times the average. That compares with just six...

Amidst ongoing debate over the soda tax that is believed to actively bring the obesity epidemics to a halt, or at least to contribute to putting a damper on it, Coca Cola has announced a rather surprising move, that of including a detailed calorie count on the labels of each beverage, WSJ Blogs informs. The change will be complete by the end of 2011, with containers already coming with the altered labels in Europe and Australia. As easily imagined, Coca Cola’s announcement did not fail to generate a controversy, with some speculating that it had nothing to do with the company’s concern over the health of its customers, but rather with it finding a way to avoid the soda tax. Under the guise of good faith lies a not-too-subtle attempt at escaping government regulation, they say. Of course, Coca Cola Co. is adamant the change has been a long time coming and, most importantly, that it has nothing to do with ongoing talk to push the so-called soda tax. “Coca-Cola Co. sa!

Where, 25 years ago, children dreamed of becoming teachers, doctors or pilots, today’s young ones have different aspirations. They want to become celebrities, pop or sports stars in particular, mostly by the model they see on television in the ever-so-popular talent competitions, a new study reveals, as cited by The Telegraph. A “seismic shift” in terms of aspirations has occurred in the space of only one generation, a new study conducted in the UK indicates. Not only are children no longer attracted to what one may call traditional professions, but they are increasingly inclined to dream of becoming overnight stars, have money and lead a luxurious life, without even realizing that, for that too, a lot of talent and hard work are necessary. The study was conducted on a batch of 3,000 British parents with children aged five to 11. Researchers first questioned the parents to find out the career dreams they had when they were children, and then moved on to analyze the !
answers the children gave. The differences were startling, to say the least, and are all explainable by the celebrity culture promoted by all media, researchers believe. “Becoming a sports star like footballer Wayne Rooney is the top ambition of today’s pre-teens, the dream of 12 per cent. Despite their impressive sizes, modern planes are still fairly sensitive to mid-air impacts. Over the past year, a cascade of incidents has drawn attention to the fact that birds still remain a major hazard for continental or global flights, especially in terms of the damage they cause when they impact the fuselages. Maintenance work is currently difficult to perform on aircraft, because engineers have difficulties identifying the spots on the fuselage where the damage has been inflicted. But that will soon go away, as experts are already working on a new class of sensors to be incorporated directly into planes. The detection devices will be built into the fuselage, and they will provide ground controllers, pilots and mechanics with a complete, real-time telemetry of a plane's condition. If any sort of damage occurs, warning lights will blink immediately, and decision-makers will have a lot more time to take action than they have had until now. Additionally, once the plane !
is on the ground, emergency response teams will be able to start working on the affected spot immediately, without having to perform a full plane check. “We use thermoelectric generators, developed in cooperation with Micropelt GmbH, and adapt them so that they work efficiently,” Dr. Dirk Ebli...
