Although it’s not long that rumor surfaced that all that Victoria’s Secret Angel Alessandra Ambrosio had to do to drop the pregnancy weight was just to be herself, as she had been blessed with incredible genes, the model herself tells People it’s not quite so. Yes, losing weight is easy for her, but she also has to focus on staying healthy and in the best shape possible, for which reason she makes sure she works out a lot. Losing weight and being fit for the catwalk are two different things, Ambrosio explains for the aforementioned publication. After giving birth to her baby girl last year, the model had little problems with shifting a few extra pounds, but now that she’s preparing for the upcoming annual Victoria’s Secret show, when the new collection premieres, she has to work out â€" a lot â€" while also paying a lot of attention to her diet. “Last year, because I had a baby and I had to lose pounds, I did a lot of cardio. This year is all about weights, !
squats and lunges.” Ambrosio tells People of her efforts of always staying in top shape. “After I gave birth, my diet was a very healthy diet, like no sugar, no bread. But now, I am just eating whatever. I’m working out to prepare for the show because it’s our biggest show of t...

Among the many enhancements that Windows 7 brings to the table is the evolution of graphical user interfaces and natural user interfaces as far as Windows clients are concerned. One of the key aspects of this evolution is the Ribbon/Fluent graphical user interface. Microsoft introduced the Ribbon GUI for the first time with the advent of the Office 2007 System. With the release of Windows 7, the Redmond company is looking to make Ribbon pervasive throughout the operating system. To aid this precise scope, Microsoft has made available for download Windows Ribbon: Samples. “Demonstrates the markup and code (written in C++) required to implement a very simple Win32 application with a Ribbon, with options to output various Ribbon Framework callbacks to a console window,” the company explained. There are no less than six ZIP packages with Windows 7 Ribbon samples available as free downloads for developers looking to seamlessly integrate their programs into the latest itera!
tion of Windows. In order to leverage the sample devs will need the Windows 7 RTM Software Development Kit (SDK) and Visual Studio 2008 or later. Early adopters and testers already familiar with Windows 7 from the development process with such releases as Beta Build 7000 or Release Candidate (RC) Build 7100 already know...

While we are waiting for the NPD Group to release the sales figures for September, which should have been out on Friday but have been delayed because of some processing issues, the latest hardware and software numbers out of Japan are available, with sales of all gaming hardware falling even as all the big consoles are cheaper and with Pokemon dominating the scene. The Nintendo DSi handheld moved a little over 50,000 units in one week, managing to again top the chart, while the PlayStation Portable from Sony seems unable to mount a solid challenge, trailing the Nintendo device by about 10,000 units. It's not clear how much effect the launch of the new PSP Go has had on the Sony device. The PlayStation 3 is the best sold home gaming console, managing to move 30,896 units, just ahead of a resurgent Nintendo Wii, buoyed by a price cut, which reached 30,741 console sold in one week. Health experts constantly issue warnings on the dangers of tanning beds and how they considerably increase chances of developing skin cancer even if used in moderation and with all precautions taken. Sam Laing, a 23-year-old woman from the UK, has learned the hard way that cancer is not the only enemy that comes with the use of sunbeds, as she’s currently suffering from a condition that could cost her her eyesight for not using goggles in the ten years she has been a “tanorexic,” as the Daily Mail informs. Laing discovered tanning beds at the age of 13 and, since then, she’s been getting up on one to have brown, “sunkissed” skin for up to three times a week. She’s what is known as a “tanorexic,” and she’s also the first to admit to it. Because she did not want to end up with “panda eyes,” where she’d have more discolored areas around her eyes, she didn’t use goggles once when tanning, despite the fact that all experts warned they were a must, n!

Previously, I stated that Risen was a challenging game only to later on reconsider my opinion and admit that I did find it difficult. Now I find myself saying that it has become easy. This could be because I'm a relatively chaotic person under my calm, charming exterior but it's more likely because the game has a difficulty curve like a pin on top of a ball of yarn. It may be up high now, but as soon as a cat comes and gives the ball a nudge, you end up on the bottom only to rise again and repeat the cycle endlessly. In the beginning you get a knife to fight all the wildlife and arrogant people you come across. And as long as you play it cool and learn the weakness in everyone's attack, you'll be fine. But then you're expected to do the same thing, with the same gear and skills but against an army. Solitary animals are now longer found and it seems like every animal on the face of this island decided to hold hands and form a social club. It may be rewarding to finally def!

--------
Canadian mobile phone operator Bell has just lowered the price tag for the Palm Pre, which has been available in its offering for about two months now, to $149.95 upon the signing of a one-year contract agreement with the Wireless carrier. The new price tag emerged soon after the Palm Pre became available for purchase in Europe, and follows a series of price cuts the device had seen previously. Bell Canada launched the Palm Pre on its airwaves back in August, when the phone was priced at $199.95 upon the signing of a three year contract agreement, but Canadians also had the chance to purchase it for $449.95 on a two-year service agreement, for $549.95 with a one-year contract, or for $599.95 with no contract. According to mobilesyrup, the demand for the Palm Pre seems to have been high, especially since the price tag was appealing. However, retailers started lowering the price for the device soon after the initial availability in Canada, and Walmart was the first one to !
work on the price tags, lowering them to $198.83, $448.83, $548.83 and $598.83 on a 3-year, 2-year, 1-year and 30-day contract, respectively. This price drop was only a minor one, Best Buy providing a more consistent cut with its $149.99 price tag offer for the Palm Pre. As for Bell, this is the first time it lowers the price f...

Adam Lambert fans have plenty of reasons to rejoice: not only is the release date for his debut album drawing near, but they also get to hear the first song outside the American Idol competition. “Time for Miracles” is included on the music score for the doomsday film “2012” and, just like Adam promised not long ago, it doesn’t disappoint. Far from it, as Rolling Stone can confirm. “Lambertitis” is taking over the world and “Time for Miracles” is the first step in the right direction, music critics say. After what Adam himself said in past interviews about the track and after hearing what Queen guitarist Brian May had to say about it even before it was known Lambert would be included on the score, fans were led to believe this would be the most awesome track ever recorded in the history of music, as MTV also puts it. Those who did think that were not that far off, it is further said. “Fan theories that the song would be epic were proven correct. Like!

In just a matter of years, Firefox has risen to become the number 2 browser on the market, even in the context of Microsoft’s Windows monopoly. But while the focus on the Internet/Cloud continues to increase, the relevance and importance of browsers in end user scenarios becomes critical. Mozilla, just as other browser developers, is foraying into the future of browsing, and reveals that the browsers will need to evolve in order to become user-centric, you-centric, more specifically. In the video embedded at the bottom of this article you will be able to see Aza Raskin, Head of User Experience for Mozilla Labs, speaking on Mozilla’s perspective of where browsers are heading. Already Mozilla Labs has a few research projects in development that offer a clue as to what the Firefox of the future might look like. “We’ve been thinking at Mozilla Labs about what it means for the web to be more personal, more social, and more about you. It breaks down into four areas: I!

The video of my keynote from FOWA London below presents a sketch of what this might look like, and what it means for the future of browsing. The Microsoft Silverlight Streaming service will never make it to its third anniversary. The Redmond company is working on discontinuing Silverlight Streaming by Windows Live Beta and has announced that it will eventually shut down the service entirely. No specific deadline for the death of Silverlight Streaming was offered at this point in time, as the software giant provided more of a heads up to all customers that had leveraged the offering for the past couple of years. At the same time, the Redmond company announced that it was working on a new service, designed to replace much of the functionality of Silverlight Streaming, but which will be built around Windows Azure, and will not be free as was the case of its pseudo-precursor. “A new Windows Azure-based hosting and delivery service will be launched by the end of 2009, though this is not a direct replacement for Silverlight Streaming and will have costs associated with its use,” Microsoft stated. “Key dates an!

Spotify has been doing well drawing in new users but it has to expand its revenue streams if it wants to actually become profitable at some point. Ad revenue can only get you so far and users have been reluctant to move up to the paid premium subscription but the mobile area looks a lot more promising. The service already offers dedicated apps for the iPhone, Android and S60 devices but now it's announcing a new mobile option with a twist, albeit a rather predictable one, as it's partnering with 3UK to offer the service bundled with their HTC Hero handset with a two-year contract. Users will pay £99 ($161) for the phone, the first Android-powered device offered by the network, and £35 ($57) per month for two years and will get all the Spotify they can handle, on their phone but also on their PC, with the unlimited premium subscription. The contract includes 750 mobile minutes, unlimited texting and data and Skype-to-Skype calls. Spotify's premium service comes in at £9!

The deal is actually completely unsurprising considering the ties between the mobile operator and Spotify. 3UK is owned by the Hutchison Whampoa corporation, which is in turn controlled by Li Ka-shing, one of the wealthiest men in the world and one of Spotify's private inves...

Experts from the Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Jefferson Headache Center have recently announced in a new study that people usually suffering from migraines experience hangover headaches more harshly than those who do not suffer from the condition. The investigation is meant as a warning for those who know that they have migraines, and yet insist on getting drunk during some nights. The find will be presented at the Neuroscience 2009 conference, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held in Chicago, Illinois, e! Science News reports. The reason why this line of research was not possible before is that creating animal models that suffer from headaches was extremely difficult. In the new experiments, researchers at the Center managed to create a rat model that fitted the requirements. The rodent was made to feel headaches by repeated stimulation of the dura mater with an inflammatory mixture, over weeks and months. In charge of the studies has been TJU Ass!

The animal model was then used to assess the pain differences that occurred between the rats that suffered from continuous migraines and those who experienced no such pain. The rats were divided into four groups, two of which received the stimulation. The other two were used for control. Al...

The Valley of the Kings, on the banks of the Nile River, opposite to the ancient city of Thebes, is the necropolis where all pharaohs and nobles from the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BC) were entombed. For over 500 years, numerous funeral monuments were built at the location. Since it began being explored, the Valley has yielded phenomenal finds and has considerably furthered our knowledge of ancient Egypt. Now, the necropolis is endangered by the fact that most of the structures are built atop rock-fracture concentrations underground, e! Science News reports. When ancient Egyptian builders set out to construct the monuments, they might have purposefully built them atop these dangerous areas, because the limestone was a lot easier to carve at those locations. However, while that may have been appropriate thousands of years ago, it now poses a large number of challenges to curators, whose job is to keep the structures intact. “Previously, I noticed that some tomb !

On Friday, reportedly after several attempts to settle the matter outside a court of law, TLC, the network producing and carrying the “Jon & Kate Plus 8” reality show, filed a lawsuit against Jon Gosselin for breach of contract. In court documents, the network argues that Jon is using his children as “pawns” for his own interest, namely that of getting out of the exclusive contract it has with TLC, it has emerged, according to People magazine. Jon Gosselin wants out of his contract with TLC, for which reason he stopped production on the show after he was nearly excluded from it, and it was renamed “Kate Plus 8.” The basis on which he managed to block the once-successful show from filming was that he felt his eight children were being exploited in front of the cameras. Therefore, as a concerned parent, he had every right to ask for production to be halted, which is exactly what happened. However, it’s Jon himself who’s exploiting the children, TLC now s!

Experts from the University of Edinburgh, in the UK, have recently announced that very small crystals may hold the key to making the computers of tomorrow able to hold up to 100 times more data than existing systems. The team has been involved in trying to produce salt crystals in gel, using advanced laser technology, in the hope of boosting storage capacities in desktop computers for a few years, the BBC News reports. The goal is to enable users to store a terabyte of data within the space of a sugar cube within the next years. This would be sufficient memory to store in excess of 250,000 photos, or about one million electronic books, experts believe. The reason why creating such memories is so difficult is the fact that many scientists look at producing crystals from salt within gels as a “black art.” The process is notoriously difficult to control and, if one variable remains unaccounted for, then the end-result does not fit the specifications and demands. There ar!

In order to form a temporary crystal, the UE team used not one, but two low-energy beams of laser, which provided the exact amount of power needed to create the crystalli...

According to a team of experts from the University of Warwick, it may be that using the transition metallic elements Ruthenium and Osmium could lead to the creation of new and improved drugs for conditions such as colon and ovarian cancer. The new drugs may be especially effective against cancerous cells that have already developed immunity to other therapies, the scientists add. Their work is detailed in the latest issue of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, e! Science News reports. Ovarian cancer cells are, for example, currently fought with the drug Cisplatin, which is the most successful transition metal form of therapy created. It relies on the metal platinum, but it can be ineffective against cancer, in that some cells become resistant to its effect, rendering the entire treatment useless. In instances where this has happened, medicine relying on Osmium and Ruthenium seems to cause a significant cell death, increasing a patient's chances of recovery. “Ruthenium !

Even though it's not exactly certain at this point that life exists on other worlds, astronomers are already planning to detect advanced civilizations, maybe similar to our own in advancements. But a new proposal takes the prize. It says that scanning a planet's atmosphere for signs of light pollution and other types of wastes typically associated with intelligent activity may be our best bet of finding something among the stars, NewScientist reports. Radio noises have thus far been the best bet, but, taking our own planetary history into account, experts say that finding anything searching for it is doubtful. New investigation is beginning to reveal that the influence is both beneficial and harmful, and that a natural balance is necessary, if APP levels are to have no ill effect on the body, PhysOrg reports. “Our work suggests that APP balance is critical for normal neuronal development, connection of synapses, and dendritic spine development, all of which have implications for the extensive synapse loss and cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer's disease,” Georgetown University Medical Center Department of Neuroscience research scientist Hyang-Sook Hoe, PhD, says. The expert is also the author of a new study detailing the finds, presented recently at the 39th annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. “One strateg!
y to counteract development of Alzheimer's disease is to maintain balance in APP protein expression in order to prevent production of Abeta,” the scientist adds. Abeta (amyloid beta) is a 39- to 42-amino acid peptide, created through APP proteolysis. It is one of the main components of amyloid plaques, the formations found in the brains of ...

--------
Microsoft is cooking the next iteration of the Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library, promising that the first Community Technology Preview will be made available soon. No definitive availability date was made public at the time of this article, but Anil Revuru, Senior SDE, Information Security Tools team, did share some details about the evolution of the Anti-XSS Library. A key aspect of this evolution is the fact that the security resource is no longer focused exclusively on anti-cross site scripting. In this regard, Microsoft has rebranded the old Anti-XSS Library as the Web Protection Library or WPL. Revuru explained that the Web Protection Library label was designed to illustrate the new mitigations added to the Anti-XSS Library and Security Runtime Engine (SRE). “WPL now includes encoding methods to provide mitigations around LDAP Injection and CSS Injections (Cascading Style Sheets) with several others planned for the future. The runtime protection module includes a !
new HTTP Module that detects and protects from SQL Injection attempts using a specialized SQL Parser to detect any valid SQL queries in the input,” Revuru stated. Moving forward, Microsoft is advising developers that are leveraging ASP.NET in order to build websites to turn to Web Protection Library 1.0...

Google is one of the largest web companies around yet it makes most of its revenue, about 97 percent, from advertising. There's still potential growth in advertising, especially as the market is picking up, but Google is looking for new revenue streams and is making quite an effort going for the enterprise software and services market. Its Google Apps suite has seen some success with businesses and the company ran an extensive marketing campaign in August promoting it in the US. Now it's expanding the campaign worldwide but it's also making some small but important changes to the tone and, consequently, some of the facts. Google's Apps suite offers some collaboration features that some of the traditional office suites can't really match but on the whole it can't match their features and functionality yet. Still, the company is putting a lot of weight behind it and has even turned to traditional forms of advertising like a series of billboards in several major cities in th!

--------
Last night was a huge night on British singing televised competition X Factor, as it included the first-ever performance in the UK in 12 years of “comeback diva” Whitney Houston. Whitney performed one of her recent singles, the up-tempo “Million Dollar Bill,” and, despite a somewhat embarrassing wardrobe malfunction, she put on an amazing show. It wasn’t until the end of it, when the interview started, that things got awkward, as the Telegraph informs. Whitney took to the stage in a silver, sparkly, floor-length dress that she had to lift off the ground in order to move around. Yet, she did not let that stop her from dancing and showing the audience and the viewers at home that she did not and would never need sophisticated dance moves to “feel” the music. Not even a potentially very embarrassing wardrobe malfunction stopped Houston from giving a class-A performance, albeit she did stop throwing her hands up in the air as energetically as before. Fans of t!

Scientists at the University of Illinois reveal that small, mechanical forces applied to embryonic stem-cell cultures may have the ability to drastically influence the structures' differentiation process. This essentially means that applying various types of mechanical stress on the cultures during this stage could lead to different types of end-result cells. Two of the research fields that could directly benefit from this knowledge are regenerative medicine and therapeutic cloning, the team reports. “Our results suggest that small forces may indeed play critical roles in inducing strong biological responses in embryonic stem cells, and in shaping embryos during their early development,” University of Illinois Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering Ning Wang explains. The Sidekick data loss / recovery issue will still have to wait for a few more days before everything is put back in order. Redmond-based software company Microsoft (which acquired Danger, the company in charge with the Sidekick data, last year) announced on Sunday that users might see their data restored this week. “The Danger / Microsoft team is continuing to work around the clock on the data restoration process. We apologize that this is taking so long, but we want to make sure we are doing everything possible to maintain the integrity of your data. We continue to make steady progress, and we hope to be able to begin restoring personal contacts for affected users this week, with the remainder of the content (photographs, notes, to-do-lists, marketplace data, and high scores) shortly thereafter,” Microsoft says in a press release. As many of you might already know, the Sidekick users took a great hit when the servers where the data on their handsets was backed up !
went down a few weeks ago. The issue proved to be much bigger than originally believed, as both the first server and the backup one went down, and some of the Sidekick users were facing massive data loss as soon as they tried to reset their devices. The unmanned cargo freighter is the 35th such mission flown to the orbital outpost in more than ten years, Space reports. Even though they are not exactly spectacular, these flights, which see the Progress capsules docking themselves to the ISS, are what keeps the station going, providing priceless supplies, such as water, food, scientific equipment, and spare parts. As Apple’s FY Q4 2009 conference call approaches, talk of new, all-in-one desktop Macintosh models continues to surface. With iMac supplies dwindling in recent weeks, 9to5mac cites more than one source as saying that new iMacs are likely on their way. One of these sources even suggests the launch could occur this week â€" tomorrow, to be precise. German Mac-focused website Mac Essentials reports that m-Store is offering deals on iMacs, including 0% finance and a free HP printer, 9to5mac points out. It was only a few weeks ago that we learned HTC might be getting ready to come to the market with yet another high-end mobile phone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, the HTC Dragon. The company already announced officially the launch of its first Snapdragon-based device, the HTC HD2, but, while this device comes to the market with Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system, the HTC Dragon is expected to run under Google's Android platform. A series of photos that seem to feature said Android-based Dragon have emerged into the wild now, following previously leaked images with the handset's ROM, and showing us what to expect from the phone when it will come to the market. Guiding light through optical fibers was never something easy to do, and the communication industry has been using photonic crystals â€" specially patterned materials â€" for the job since the early days. In mobile phones, unwanted frequencies are screened out using similar materials, called phononic crystals, which are able to manipulate mechanical vibrations. Now, for the first time, a group of scientists has learned how to combine the two in one, creating a type of crystal that is able to store both light and mechanical vibrations, Nature News reports. The new “optomechanical” innovation was created at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), by a team of scientists led by expert Oskar Painter. It can control, trap and guide light and vibrations, a trait that could see it being used for constructing more accurate biosensors, creating interfaces for devices on a chip, and also for creating cooling mechanisms for testing quantum limits. The two types of cr!
