Researchers looking into understanding the triggers that favor the onset and development of Alzheimer's disease recommend that people respect their normal sleeping times whenever possible. In new scientific studies, investigators determined that the lack of sleep could contribute to the production of a biomolecule that had been directly linked to the neurodegenerative form of dementia. ScienceNow reports that, in studies conducted on both mice and humans, the levels of the peptide amyloid-β rose during the day. In fact, they continued to rise during wake hours, and their production increased slightly the more tired a test subject got. When the participants, or the animal models, went to sleep, the peptide's concentration in the body decreased significantly. In mice, the scientists noticed that the lack of sleep caused formations known as plaques, which are essentially amyloid-β deposits. Similar structures can be found in the neural pathways of people suffering from Alzh!
eimer's disease. The team behind the experiments admits that the connection still merits more investigating, and that a clear conclusion is still far away. Regardless, if it turns out to be correct, the correlation could also hint at new avenues of research in developing drugs and therapies for the unforgiving condition. As Alzheimer'...

Virgin America Airlines has joined forces with CW for a brand-new reality show that will go into production soon, with a premiere date set tentatively for 2010. The new televised series will take viewers many miles up and then to various exotic locations as they “tag along” female flight attendants, learning what makes their lives so interesting, The Wrap informs. However, since no reality series is all about work and no play, “Fly Girls” will also show the five protagonists on their breaks from work, as they feel the night pulse of every city they travel to, a statement from CW says. In this sense, the upcoming project will represent a combination of a dating reality show with a documentary, and will aim to present life of flight attendants such as it is. “The CW is joining the mile high (reality) club, greenlighting production on a half-hour docusoap about flight attendants who work for uberhip upstart Virgin America. Sony has finally managed to put a release date next to Gran Turismo 5, the racing simulator that has been under development for close to four full years. Unfortunately, the March 2010 date that was announced at a Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan press event at the Tokyo Game Show was only for the Japanese market and the representatives refused to issue any comments related to North America or to Europe. Luckily, there are some clear signs that Gran Turismo 5 might actually arrive on the same date worldwide. The boss of Polyphony Digital, Kazunori Yamauchi, told MTV Multiplayer a while ago that, “Its release is not too far away â€" it will be after the PSP GT release â€" and, most likely, it will be a simultaneous worldwide release.” Since that statement was made, things might have changed, but Sony needs to make sure that the situation of GT 5 Prologue, which launched in the United States a full four months after it did in Japan, does not repeat itself. Other stat!
ements from Yamauchi hinted that the video game was pretty much done at that point, as the team was only working on making sure that all bugs were squashed and that the car-damage model was working well. With a Gran Turismo video game for the PlayStation Portable released recently, Sony and Polyphony Digital probably thought that push...

--------
Social networking has been around for some years now with users and time spent growing steadily. However, new numbers from Nielsen show that social networking has grown in a big way in the past year, with users spending almost three times more on social networks. Largely due to the huge increase in user numbers Facebook has seen in the past year, the shift does mark a growing trend and a change in the way users spend their time online. “This growth suggests a wholesale change in the way the Internet is used,” Jon Gibs, VP of media and agency insights at Nielsen’s online division, said. “While video and text content remain central to the Web experience â€" the desire of online consumers to connect, communicate and share is increasingly driving the medium’s growth.” In August 2009, Internet users spent on average 17 percent of their time online on social networks, a number almost three times bigger than in August 2008, when social networks only managed to attrac!

DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein, was found dead last month in his New York City apartment from an overdose. Sober for many years in a row, he had relapsed back to drugs, which eventually led to his untimely death. Before that, though, he had shot a reality show for MTV, whose future had been insecure ever since toxicology reports came back, but The Hollywood Reporter is now saying the network will go ahead and air it. “Gone Too Far,” the reality show AM shot before his relapse, was conceived as an intervention-type of show, where he acted like the older and more experienced counselor who used his own case to help others face their addictions. Because he died precisely of a drug overdose, the question of whether airing the show would not seem hypocritical and exploiting inevitably came up. From what THR says, it seems MTV has decided the answer to that is, no, it would not be so. “The status of ‘Gone Too Far’ has been in question since DJ AM, whose real name is!

Fans saw a mixture of Final Fantasy and Bejeweled when they dove inside Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. And they liked what they saw. The game was developed by Infinite Interactive and published by D3 Publisher and was greatly rewarded by fans and critics. It even won MTV Networks' GameTrailers title of "Best Puzzle/Parlor Game" of 2007 and GameSpy's "Best Xbox Live Arcade Game" of 2007. And owners of the two games that found themselves associated with Challenge of the Warlords took notice of the fans’ metaphor. Square Enix made an announcement this morning in which they said they'd be partnering with PopCap to create Gyromancer, the embodiment of the game that brought them together, Puzzle Quest: CW. The new title will be a mixture of a role-playing game and puzzle, and will be available through Xbox Live Arcade and Steam. Any further details have not been released, as neither of the two companies involved in the project gave any elaborate comments. "Gyromance!

The so-called “white spaces” in the TV spectrum left open by the move towards digital broadcasting are very attractive to a number of big tech companies and for good reason. The unlicensed space could lower the entry for wireless Internet solutions, which would cover a much broader area than the current Wi-Fi technology can. Obviously, there is a lot of potential there but a new study commissioned by Microsoft puts an actual figure on that potential, claiming that white spaces could be worth as much as $100 billion over the next 15 years. The study [PDF] by Richard Thanki of Perspective Associates found that using the currently unlicensed spectrum to provide wireless Internet could generate anywhere from $3.9 billion to $7.3 billion in value every year over the next 15 years. The value is derived from the increased use of devices capable of connecting to the Internet but also from other economic factors. The study also underlines some of the advantages of using this s!
pectrum over other wireless technologies currently available. None of them should be new to anyone following the developments in the area but, by using the lower end spectrum, a wireless hotspot could cover a much larger area than current WiFi hotspots do, which could benefit heavily populated areas but also lower ...

Coming to show that there’s never smoke without a fire and that, sometimes, even the most unlikely report contains a grain of truth, the Columbia/Epic Label Group of Sony Music has just confirmed that a new Michael Jackson single will premiere on radio on October 12. The song, called “This Is It,” will be included on the album that is released simultaneously with the “This Is It” docu-film and will serve the purpose of promoting the multiple releases taking place in October, Reuters informs. Reports of a new Michael Jackson track first began to emerge after his sudden death in June this year. Some sources even said that he had up to 100 completed tracks on personal hard drives, drives that later presumably changed hands when they were removed from Michael’s residence by sister LaToya. Washington and Lee University Philosophy Professor and Chair of the philosophy department James E. Mahon is the person who wrote the definition of lying for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. He says that, even though a popular TV show concluded that people lied, on average, about 42 times per week, much less lying goes on, in fact, in today's society. But there's a catch. He looks at lying according to his own definition, which only includes actual lies, and not other forms of not telling the truth. “Certain conditions have to be in place for a statement to rise to the level of a lie. First, a person must make a statement and must believe that the statement is false. Second, the person making the statement must intend for the audience to believe that the statement is true. Anything else falls outside the definition of lying that I have defended,” the expert says of his definition. Essentially, his point is that people who are not aware that they are telling a l!

Before Paula Abdul announced that she would leave American Idol, the only ones who did not have one single reason to worry were host Ryan Seacrest, who had just renewed his contract, and judge Simon Cowell, who would stay on Idol as long as Idol stood on TV, it was being said. Reports have now emerged saying that one of the conditions Fox agreed to in order to have Cowell on Idol was to import British talent competition X Factor, MTV says, citing the Hollywood Reporter. Cowell, it seems, has long been trying to bring X Factor to the US to very little success so far. Although it is one of the most popular shows of its kind back home in the UK, in the US, American Idol is the leader of the market. You know the world is going down the drain when computer drivers provided by the official company come with a trojan virus. According to Rik Ferguson of Trend Micro, PC accessory maker Razor USA has been infected with a computer virus that quickly started to spread to anyone who downloaded the latest firmware update. Trend Micro downloaded and examined eight drivers from the company's site and then contacted Razer to inform it of the security breach. The files were quickly removed from the site. But this was meant to simply prevent further damage and could not undo the damage done. Any user that downloaded the drivers by the time they were removed from the site also got the virus. Along with their drivers, they also retrieved the WORM.ASPXOR.AB Trojan. With only 7 out of 41 anti virus vendors offering detection for the malware, the virus is mostly unknown to the Internet and many of those who downloaded the firmware ended up with the unwelcomed clandestine passenger. Acquiring and hoarding various types of objects is a behavior in which many humans are engaged. In fact, almost every person on the planet collects something, from pins and stamps, to yachts and rare artifacts. But there are those who collect and hoard them compulsively. These individuals, whom mental-health experts have termed “compulsive hoarders,” will go to great lengths to satisfy their needs, including spending ridiculously large amounts of cash on their collectibles, or alienating their friends and family, LiveScience reports. According to healthcare experts, the condition is best classified as a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a condition that can even grow to be as complex as to cut individuals off from society, and even endanger lives. Psychiatrists classify the condition as a pathological brain disorder, although there are some who argue that compulsive hoarding is similar to bad planning and disorganization. Though that idea gained some merit !
a while ago, it is currently being set aside, in favor of a more scientific approach. Scientists say that, oftentimes, the condition can be a clear indicator of other afflictions, such as the impulse control disorder or the attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). “People with this problem tend to have a first-deg...

Scientists working with nanoparticles tout them as the way of the future in a large number of research fields, ranging from computing and chemistry to electronics and medicine. However, in order for the tiny structures to be of any good, they need to fulfill certain demands. Creating them after strict specifications has proven to be a difficult obstacle to overcome, but experts at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) have recently managed to consistently create hollow, solid and amorphous nanoparticles of nickel phosphide. Because their methods of production yielded the same results at all times, they are considering the possibility of creating a “how-to” guide on producing such custom nanoparticles, so that other research groups working on the nanoscale could progress in their work as well. Such a guide, the scientists believe, could bring about a wave of innovation, from research initiatives that are now at a stand-still because the correct type of nanoparticles!
cannot be produced. Nickel phosphide, for instance, can be used as a catalyst for removing sulfur from fuel, or for the development of new types of solar cells. “It's been known that these structures could be made, but this research provides us with a comprehensive understanding of nanos...

Around the world, the incidence of eye diseases is constantly increasing, either due to environmental factors, or because more and more people turn to unhealthy lifestyles, and then later pay the price. In order to curb the rates at which human eyes deteriorate, Canadian experts have set up a new university/industry research network, which aims to develop new medical devices, biomaterials and drug-delivery systems against a number of conditions affecting both the eyes and the optical nerves. Speaking on September 24th at the McMaster University in Hamilton, Federal Minister of State (Science and Technology) Gary Goodyear announced that the new 20/20: NSERC Ophthalmic Materials Network (20/20 Network) had been awarded a $5-million research grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Additional money, the official said, were coming in from the industry partners, as well as from the Ontario Centers of Excellence.“Providing Canadians wi!
th a lifetime of perfect vision is the ultimate goal of the network. It is rather ambitious but by combining different areas of expertise there is a lot of potential for drastically improving treatment of vision loss,” McMaster University Professor of Chemical Engineering Heather Sheardown, who is also the scientific dir...

--------
Scientists at the University of Washington have recently announced that they have managed to develop a technique that allows them to print glass objects with a conventional 3D printer. The accomplishment, which comes one year after the same team showed that ceramics could be printed in the same manner, is similar to the established glassware manufacturing method known as pate de verre. Engineers and artists at the university's Solheim Rapid Manufacturing Laboratory were in charge of developing the new technology, known as the Vitraglyphic process.“It became clear that if we could get a material into powder form at about 20 microns we could print just about anything,” UW Professor of Mechanical Engineering Mark Ganter, who is also the co-director of the Solheim Laboratory, explains. He adds that, in a conventional 3D printer, a layer of powder is set on a substrate, and then software-controlled ink jets only apply binder-solution droplets where needed. Thus, a 3D structu!
re is formed. However, things are not that simple when glass is involved. The scientists soon understood that even very small glass particles could not readily absorb liquid. Therefore, they say, the method they developed for ceramics had to be considerably altered. “Using our normal process to print ob...

HTTP:: How to Extract Oxygen from the Moon
--------
This week saw one of the most important announcements made in the past decade. Scientists were finally able to conclude that water ice existed on the Moon, and their theory is supported by scientific measurements conducted by three separate instruments. Additionally, the find could be again proven next month, when the LCROSS impactor is scheduled to hit a Southern lunar crater, and to send up spews of the stuff, if it exists. Now, scientists also announce that they are working on an oxygen generator, which could be used to provide the essential chemical for long-term explorers. Ever since humans first set foot on the Moon, they have been fascinated by going back, and by exploring it from a lunar outpost. However, at this point, this is nearly impossible, mostly because of the costs associated with building such a forward base. Another great challenge is that water and oxygen, two essential chemicals for human life, cannot be found on the Moon in sufficiently large quantiti!
es and concentrations. When NASA offered a $250,000 prize to whoever would devise a method of extracting oxygen from dirt, two years went by without any conclusive results. Now, scientists at the American space agency, and the Case Western Reserve University are they themselves developing an instrument that would essentially be able to extract ox...

HTTP:: Dual Star Disks Reveal Themselves to the Twin Keck Telescopes
--------
The Keck Telescopes are today widely regarded as being among the top observatories in the world, due to their ability to probe deeply within the sky, with great accuracy and detail. Recently, astronomers wielding the twin ten-meter telescopes have analyzed the most compact dust disks ever found around another star, using the Keck Interferometer Nuller (KIN). This instrument combines light from both observatories, using interferometry, and is so sensitive, that objects very far away can be seen around their stars. Normally, their brightness would be surpassed by their stars' glare. “This is the first compact disk detected by the KIN, and a demonstration of its ability to detect dust clouds a hundred times smaller than a conventional telescope can see,” the leader of the research team, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center astronomer Christopher Stark, explains. The dual object is not small, per se. Rather, if placed inside our own solar system, the inner dust disk would exten!
d over four times the distance between the Earth and the Sun, and would reach the orbit of Jupiter. The outer disk extends hundreds of time farther into space, the team reveals. Essentially, what KIN does is combine light from the two telescopes in a manner that allows astronomers to...

--------
In less than a week's time, NASA's Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft will perform its third and final flyby of the planet, as well as its last gravity assist maneuver. This will set it on a course that will enable it to be captured in the planet's orbit in 2011. During the last flyby of the mission, the probe will pass less than 142 miles above the planet, and will image its surface again with all of its instruments, the American space agency reports. MESSENGER alone has already imaged some 90 percent of Mercury's surface during its previous two flybys, and the next one will complete the most detailed map of the closest planet to the Sun. Specific features on the surface that have not been fully analyzed during the other passes will get a new look, as mission controllers will activate dedicated instruments aboard the space probe. “This flyby will be our last close look at the equatorial regions of Mercury, and it is o!
ur final planetary gravity assist, so it is important for the entire encounter to be executed as planned. As enticing as these flybys have been for discovering some of Mercury's secrets, they are the hors d'oeuvres to the mission's main course â€" observing Mercury from orbit for an entire year,” the mission's princ...

Shape-shifting memory foam is no longer a novelty, as it has become a basic commodity in many homes. It can be found in bed mattresses and shoe soles, and it is guaranteed to offer its users an extra degree of comfort. However, it is still very expensive, and out of many people's financial reach. This is one of the main reasons scientists at the Northwestern University (NU) and the Boise State University (BSU) recently began to work on a new class of smart foam, which would be less expensive and also suited for a wider array of applications. For example, the experts believe that their innovation could be used in the near future in surgical positioning tools, or maybe even in valve mechanisms. After probing many new and revolutionary materials as the basis for their foam, the team decided to work with a nickel-manganese-gallium alloy, which is able to change its shape only when exposed to a magnetic field. The effort was led by the NU James N. and Margie M. Krebs Professor o!
f Materials Science and Engineering David Dunand, who collaborated with Peter Mullner, a professor of materials science and engineering at BSU.The new foam is capable of “magnetic shape-memory.” This means that, as long as a magnetic field is turned off, it retains whatever shape it's in. Sony put on a big show at the Tokyo Game Show, showcasing both the results of the recently launched PlayStation 3 Slim and the prospects for the future, with an emphasis on the possibilities of the Sony motion-tracking wand. Kaz Hirai, who is the chief executive officer and the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed that the new and cheaper Slim had managed to move no less than one million units in the first three weeks of sales and that Sony was ready to offer fans more of the games and excitement that had thrilled them since the original PlayStation era. The new motion-tracking controller was demoed in Japan for the first time, with Hirai claiming that the design team took into account both the necessities of the hardcore gaming crowd and an increase in accessibility to attract new gamers. Hirai again mentioned spring 2010 as being the scheduled release period, even hinting that the PlayStation 3 Slim package might include the wand and the PlayStation Eye cam!

The amazing, new find was made in Staffordshire, where archaeologists discovered the largest such pile of gold in the entire United Kingdom. The Anglo-Saxon hoard features approximately 1,500 pieces of silver and gold, and is estimated to be around 1,300 years old. Experts say that more than a year will most likely go by until the find is officially evaluated. Because South Staffordshire Coroner Andrew Haigh declared the find a treasure, it now officially belongs to the Crown, which means that the monarchy will claim it, the BBC News reports. The find was made by a Burntwood, Staffordshire resident, 55-year-old Terry Herbert, who was scanning the ground using a metal detector, a very common practice in looking for buried artifacts across the United Kigdom. The find “was what metal detectorists dream of,” he told the news agency in an interview, adding that the discovery was made on an average farmland. The newly found Staffordshire Hoard features, at first glance, abo!
ut five kilograms of gold and 2.5 kilograms of silver, authorities report. The find exceeds by far the Sutton Hoo discovery, made in 1939, which unveiled some 1.5 kilograms of gold near Woodbridge, in Suffolk, England. “This is going to alter our perceptions of Anglo-Saxon England as radically, if not more so, as the Sutton Hoo discoveries....

Victoria Beckham is incredibly skinny, that much is a well-established fact by now. As a matter of fact, Posh is so thin, she’s often criticized for encouraging women looking up to her to aspire to be a size 0, which is neither healthy, nor appealing. A fervent believer that all she needs to stay in shape is a pair of high-heeled shoes, Victoria seems to have changed her mind and has started working out five times a day, ShowbizSpy says. Although Posh’s waifish weight has often been explained in the media by means of speculation on her eating habits and even an eating disorder, a source is now saying for the aforementioned publication it’s all due to working out. Victoria, it seems, is so horrified of the saggy skin on her body and the very idea of an ounce of fat, she sometimes exercises up to five times a day, including before and after her meals. “Victoria’s main goal is to shed her excess skin. ‘She could probably sort it out by just putting on excess we!

Nothing makes for a better fashion statement than wearing something not many would dare put on. This way, the world has come to see the soaring popularity of the guyliner (eyeliner for guys), the murse (male purse), the mandals (male sandals) and the meggings (male leggings). Men’s fashion is now getting ready to welcome yet another surprising element: the mantyhose, pantyhose for men, fashion insiders say. According to experts, tights for men may have fallen out of public grace many years ago, but they’re about to make a splashing return this cold season. Most men, though, will be wearing them under their business suits, both for practical reasons (to keep warm) and for aesthetic ones, as the tights will make their natural body lines look smoother. However, those who dare can match them with shorts and even skirts for a very bold statement, and to show they are months ahead of the trends. Because one thing is for certain: this is where we’re going, fashion insiders!

These come in various colors and patterns, and with a thickness of 120 denier. “This winter the city’s most stylish men will have a secret weapon hidden in their trousers. The ‘mantyho...

There still are many who believe that women’s compulsive need to buy something new is the stuff that myths are made of and that all so-called shopaholics wouldn’t have a problem to speak of if they only kept themselves in check. Still, the problem is widespread, even if it doesn’t manifest in all women in the same manner: a recent survey shows that half of the women in the UK can’t go through a single day without buying something new, the Daily Mail informs. The reason why so many women want to spend money on a daily basis, researchers say, is that it gives them a “high,” an “adrenaline rush” that is so strong that not even rationalizations such as the lack of money, the need to be on a budget or the very uselessness of the object purchased seem to function. Thus, women learn they “have” to buy something new, even if it’s something as insignificant as bread, milk, shampoo or something with a little more value like a new pair of shoes or a fancy dress!
. “The poll of 5,347 women revealed every week the average shopaholic will spend money they don’t actually have on a fast food lunch, chocolate, beauty products, nice shampoo, make up and accessories. More than half of those polled (53 per cent) admitted it didn’t matt...
