--------
Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices is expected to update its platform for ultra-thin notebook systems, with the introduction of its anticipated Congo platform, which has been postponed from the end of July to early November, due to low demand in the market for ultra-thin notebooks. According to recently leaked details, the platform is expected to be launched sometime at the end of October or the beginning of November, letting PC vendors pair the chip maker's new platform with the highly anticipated Windows 7 operating system.   In a recent news-article on Digitimes, the famous sources at notebook manufacturers are quoted as claiming that AMD is preparing to launch its next-generation platform for ultra-thin notebooks sometime at the end of this month, or in early November. Driver: Parallel Lines is a videogame developed by Reflections Interactive Limited and published by Atari. Inc. The game was released for the PlayStation 2 home console from Sony, the original Xbox from Microsoft, the Nintendo Wii and the PC in March 2006. It is classed as a racing title played from a third person perspective, featuring action and shooter elements.Driver: Parallel Lines is the fourth entry in the series and marks a return to the more classic gameplay features that were mostly abandoned in DRIV3R. Almost all of the action takes place from behind the wheel. The sections where you can go on foot and battle cops with the fist and other weapons are entirely optional. Basically, a skilled player can complete the whole game without getting out of their vehicle unless they need to jack up another car when their previous vehicle has received too much damage. The game tells the story of a driver only known as TK. He was initially convicted in 1978, when he was just 18!
years old, being blamed for a crime he had not taken part in. When he gets out of prison in 2006, bitter from the experience and now a grown man, his only thought is to take revenge on the police that imprisoned and did not bother to find out who was the real man behind the crime. There are sections of the game that take place in 1978 and others ...

La Toya Jackson is pleased that one of her late brother’s songs is getting so much airplay as “This Is It,” the single released by the MJ Estate and Sony to promote the upcoming docu-film. However, the star is not so sure that Michael would have liked the film itself, since he was always such a perfectionist, she tells AccessHollywood. As per La Toya’s own words, she’s almost certain Michael would not have liked or approved of the upcoming film, also called “This Is It,” since it does not represent a complete work. The docu-film is made of the over 100 hours of footage shot during rehearsals for the London O2 Arena series of shows at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, as we also reported on previous occasions. As such, Michael would have never put out there a work that consisted of rehearsals, La Toya believes. “You know what, that’s a very, very, very good question.” La Toya says when asked of whether Michael would have liked the film. “Truthfully, my o!

Almost two weeks ahead of the October 22nd, Windows 7 General Availability deadline, Nero introduced Nero 9 Reloaded, a product that has been tailored to the successor of Windows Vista in more ways than one. First of all, Nero 9 is now fully compatible with Windows 7, meaning that the integrated digital media and home entertainment software suite has been thoroughly tested for compatibility and reliability problems with the latest version of Windows and found to meet the strict criteria imposed by Microsoft. In addition to featuring Microsoft’s “Compatible with Windows 7” logo, Nero 9 Reloaded has also been designed in order to play nice with the operating system at the level of the graphical user interface. Windows Antivirus Pro, also known as Windows Police Pro or ASC Antivirus, is the latest piece of rogue antivirus products that Microsoft has started tackling with its free Malicious Software Removal Tool security solution. Identified as TrojanDownloader:Win32/FakeScanti, the malicious code is an example of a fake antivirus, an application masquerading as a security solution. Just as other rogue antivirus programs, FakeScanti turns to a range of social engineering tricks in order to fool victims into paying for a license for a piece of software with no real functionality. “We first saw a variant of Win32/FakeScanti back in early March of this year, when it went by the name of ASC Antivirus. There was then very little activity on the FakeScanti front until late July, when we noticed a file, which we detect as TrojanDownloader:Win32/FakeScanti, downloading a new version of the scanner going by the name of Windows Antivirus Pro. A new scientific study seems to indicate that, in their quest for protection from the harmful effects of UV radiation, people may not have to pay the premium prices regularly associated with sun-protective clothing. Experts have recently determined that opting for clothes dyed in blue or red may be just as effective, only much cheaper. The Spanish research team also mentions that yellow is a color that needs to be avoided, if you are trying to protect yourself from the Sun's radiation. A paper detailing the results is scheduled for publication in print in the November 4 issue of the bi-weekly scientific journal Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, a publication of the American Chemical Society (ACS). “Color is one of the most influential variables on the protection against ultraviolet radiation provided by a fabric. Technology companies that are members of the Wi-Fi Alliance have agreed to a new peer-to-peer wireless standard whose aim is to make electronic devices communicate more easily. As a member of the Alliance, Apple is likely to introduce the standard in whatever new products it may release in 2010, when Wi-Fi Direct is expected to be approved for networking without hotspots. According to an AppleInsider report, Wi-Fi Direct would allow devices like the iPhone and iPod touch to communicate with other devices for tasks like printing or file sharing. The standard is intended for both consumer electronics as well as enterprise applications, the report reveals. By including WPA2 security and management features, it will make the perfect wireless protocol for enterprise environments, the Apple-focused site suggests. By using roughly the same power, while providing similar data rates and access range as current Wi-Fi products, the standard is likely to become widely adopted. "Wi-Fi!
Direct represents a leap forward for our industry," Wi-Fi Alliance Executive Director Edgar Figueroa, said. "Wi-Fi users worldwide will benefit from a single-technology solution to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily among devices, even when a Wi-Fi access point isn't available. As much as critics tried to put it down, the new single from Britney Spears, the not too subtly named “3,” is burning up the charts. Other than that, the video and the song are nothing but Britney’s own way of thanking her millions of fans who have supported her throughout the years and, implicitly, have made her glorious comeback possible. Softpedia took a closer look at the tech-note in question and came to the conclusion that Apple might be merely referring to the Mac OS X-typical behavior of detecting photos on a connected device (be it an iPod touch, or iPhone), therefore enabling the user to connect the device as a digital camera. “When the iPhone or iPod touch is connected to Mac OS X, a dialog is presented with choices for connecting as a digital camera and working with the digital pictures stored on the iPhone or iPod touch,” Apple explains. “This is the default behavior !
under Mac OS X for digital imaging devices,” it adds, although this doesn’t necessarily mean the iPod touch is such a device, or that Apple intends it to be. “Mac OS X provides a way to disable this notification,” the Mac maker explains, this being the purpose of the Support arti...

HTTP:: In Search of What Wrecked Saturn 039 s Rings in 1984
--------
When looking at a picture of Saturn in all its glory, you can easily see that the rings surrounding it look as sturdy as they come. They are continuously replenished by debris spewing out from a number of moons and are gravitationally bound to the gas giant itself. It would, therefore, appear that they cannot be easily influenced. Astronomers thought so too until, in 1984, a yet-unidentified event severely disrupted the thin rings, creating the vinyl-like, ridged and spiraled patterns we see even today. It would appear that all of the telescopes, satellites and probes we had in space at the time missed the event, whatever it was. The changes that were made to the inner ring of the planet were so severe, that experts believe only a change in the planet's traits itself might have caused it. Astronomers didn't even find out about the changes until 2006, when the Cassini orbiter started sending back images of the unusually shaped rings, NewScientist reports. In the D Ring,!
the closest to the surface of the planet, the space probe identified alternating bright and dark bands, which seemed to indicate that the icy ring was not entirely flat. Measurements then revealed that the ring was made up of grooves, each about a kilometer in height, which is something very unusual for Saturn's companions. Usual...

The internationally renowned Dutch electronics company Philips has recently announced the creation of a new research platform that uses the sense of touch to bring cinematic experiences to the next level. The Philips Emotions Jacket relies on using the body's largest organ, the skin, for relaying the stimuli that characters receive on the screen right to the audiences. The Jacket is the first to be dedicated exclusively to making the skin part of the action, as previous devices only focus on the eyes and the ears, PhysOrg reports. A part of the company's wider “sensory experiences” program, the Philips Emotions Jacket plans to carry on the tradition of trying to bring as much from the movie scenes into the living room as possible. The company has core competences in understanding human perception and behavior, so it plans to bring that to the table, creating a device that addresses the relatively unexplored areas of touching and feeling, rather than the visual and the!
auditive ones. Sensors and actuator technologies are slated to go into the Emotions Jacket, which promises to make watching movies more immersive and real than ever. The research platform features a number of actuators in its arms and torso, which are constructed on designs taken over from the mobile-phone technol...

According to legal documents filed last Friday in the case of her conservatorship, Britney Jean Spears is deceased. However, the singer is not the object of a prank, as it has been the case with “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson, but rather of a misunderstanding and a secretarial honest mistake, as TMZ has learned. The celebrity gossip website and paparazzi agency got hold of the papers in question hours ago, and was shocked to see that Britney was pronounced “deceased” on them. After some digging and talking to Spears’ management, though, TMZ got to the bottom of the matter by learning that it was just an honest mistake and Britney was alive and well, as few doubted it presumably. “We just pulled court documents that say Britney Spears is deceased! Aramaic is one of the oldest languages on the planet, and it is classified as part of the Afroasiatic language family. The Semitic language's history extends back 3,000 years, during which time it had been used to administer empires, to worship the gods, and also as the language of the commoners, during the Second Temple period of Israel. Various Christian, Jewish and Muslim groups of the Middle East still speak one of its modern forms today. In spite of its longevity, there are still ancient scripts and tablets featuring it that have yet to be deciphered, so experts are now using modern technologies to get the job done, PhysOrg reports. University of Southern California (USC) West Semitic Research Project members are now helping colleagues at the University of Chicago (UC) Oriental Institute obtain highly accurate images of inscriptions that have been laid on clay thousands of years ago. The 700 Aramaic administrative documents were either etched on the clay tablets with!
styluses, or were inked over using early pens and brushes. There are, of course, some tablets that feature both kinds of writing, but the thing is that the passing of time has not been kind to the artifacts. As a result, some of the letters and incisions that were made on the tablets have become invisible under natural light...

According to the study, piracy for iPhone and iPod touch users is not an alternative to the “try before you buy” (trial versions) that Apple doesn’t support in the venue, but rather a method to just try an app and maybe even hold on to it. Pinch Media begins by revealing that, “It’s been months since we introduced jailbroken detection to our library, and we’ve begun to get a better understanding of the jailbroken ecosystem, which has remained reasonably steady. To date, Pinch Analytics has received data from approximately 4.0 million jailbroken devices. About 38%, or around a million and a half of those, have used a pirated application. Graphene, the one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms that was discovered in 2004 at the University of Manchester, is the most avidly researched material today in the field of condensed-matter physics. Because electrons flow in a very peculiar way through it, experts believe it may constitute the replacement of choice for silicon, the main semiconductor in computer chips today. Just recently, researchers have discovered a new peculiarity in the material, when they have demonstrated the fractional quantum Hall Effect in it, ScienceNow reports. The scientists essentially proved that, within graphene, electrons could team up in pairs, which then behaved as if they were particles with only a fraction of the original electrons' mass. The FQHE is an embellishment of an esoteric phenomenon known as the Hall Effect, which was first established in 1879. The discovery of the QHE won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1985. As a voltage is applied to a metal bar, electrons within it flow !
naturally from one end to the other. If a magnetic field is applied vertically to the bar, then the electrons will be subjected to a sideways shove, which will force them to conglomerate on one side of the bar. This means that a voltage is also developed along the width of the bar, and also that the sideways volta...

Karl Lagerfeld, while famous for his highly innovative and boundary-breaking creations, is also known for saying the most hurtful things in the most blatant manner. He’s made his views on fat people public in the past as well, so it’s probably no wonder that he’s getting serious heat again, now that he said only fat women could possibly hate the thin models he featured in his collection, as the Examiner can confirm. In the midst of the heated debate of whether size-0 models are “created” by the designers who put them on the catwalk and whether the fashion industry is responsible for completely separating fashion from the real world, Lagerfeld puts in his two cents as well. Fashion IS an illusion and an art, therefore it’s supposed to be cut off from reality. Similarly, only fat women who sit on their couches eating all day long could possibly see anything wrong with size-0 models. “No one wants to see curvy women. Experts from the University of Michigan (UM) have recently announced the development of a new type of brain implant that could have the ability to boost people's capacity of interacting with their prosthetic devices, leading to an increased quality of life. Robotic appendages could thus become a lot more controllable, and people would have the ability to move them around, twist them and bend them according to will. They basically work in the same ways as previous methods of collecting brain signals, only more effectively and a lot better, Technology Review reports. An electrically conductive polymer is the basis for the new implants, the UM team reports. The instruments are made up of tiny polymer cups, which are so small, that they fit neatly at the end of the severed nerve endings. Electrical signals â€" which continuously move down the nerves even if there is no limb for them to flow to â€" are then picked up through these small cups, and sent to a computer, which tran!
slates the current into a set of commands for the robotic limb. “This looks like it could be an elegant way to control a prosthetic with fine movement. In a new set of experiments conducted on monkeys, researchers have managed to determine a new type of gene therapy aimed at curing the Parkinson's disease. The treatment apparently does not result in the involuntary muscle movements that are a direct consequence of other forms of therapy against the ruthless condition. At this point, the new method is being tested on a small number of volunteers, all of which are showing considerable signs of improvement, Nature News reports. Existing therapies against the disease revolve around administering the chemical levodopa, or L-DOPA, which is the precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. In patients suffering from the condition, levels of this transmitter are dangerously low, and healthcare experts hope that, by making the patients take this substance, they will at least be able to halt the evolution of the disease, if not completely reverse it. However, these treatments are plagued by side-effects, experts admit. While most !
patients regain the motor functions shortly after they start using L-DOPA, a few years later, they begin to develop severe and debilitating, physical and psychological side-effects. This means that therapies using the neurotransmitter precursor should only be used when absolutely necessary, and not as the standard in treating Parkinson's. In...

Autoimmune diseases are among the most dangerous kind in the world. They manifest themselves when the body's own immune system begins to attack the central nervous system (CNS), inflicting severe damage, and eventually leading to death. Multiple sclerosis is one good example. Although the barriers that exist between the CNS and other parts of the body seem to be extremely well constructed, a new video shows precisely how T cells, an important part of the immune system, go through these defenses, and start their attacks. In the new investigation, a team of scientists from the University Medical Center Institute for Multiple Sclerosis Research, in Gottingen, Germany, managed to track down the movements of the T cells inside a mouse model, and got a chance to look at how they passed through the barrier surrounding the CNS. The research was led by Alexander Flugel, who is also the director of the Institute, Nature News reports. “There's a question about how immune cells that!
attack the brain get entry because [it] is shielded by the blood-brain barrier,” he says. In order to get the best possible view of how these cells acted, the researchers tagged disease-causing T cells with green fluorescent proteins, and then injected the batch into the veins of rats. They then used infrared lasers, and ...
