--------
Trinny Woodall, one half of the duo that, until not long ago, was teaching England how to dress for all kinds of occasions, has long been the target of speculation about an eating disorder. Since her show in the UK was canceled for poor ratings, the style guru has been working on a successful launch in the US, which, apparently, has also led to her dropping the pounds in the most worrying manner, prompting talk of anorexia or bulimia. What with her recent beach outing, all that should probably stop, the Daily Mail believes. Woodall was spotted on a beach in the Bahamas over the weekend, working on her tan and showing off what could only be described as toned abs most men might actually kill for, as the British publication puts it in more or less words. The photos taken by the paparazzi on the occasion come to confirm that, indeed, in order to really take over America, the style guru has done more than just drop the pounds, also orienting herself towards a healthier lifest!
yle. “The mother-of-one showed off her toned stomach during a trip to the beach in the Bahamas on Saturday where she is holidaying with fellow presenter Susannah Constantine and friend Tania Bryer. Experts have recently hinted at a new way of ensuring a fast and complication-free healing process when sutures are involved. Biomedical engineering students from the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) have embedded patients' own adult stem cells into the wires they used for sutures, a feat that they say would ensure a faster healing process, as the stem cells will differentiate into the most appropriate type of tissue when they are placed near the wound. They designed the technique especially for orthopedic procedures such as ruptured tendons, which are notoriously difficult to handle and treat. The creators of the new method believe that the system could be implemented in humans within five years, which is fairly short, as far as new, still-experimental treatments go. Their preliminary work was conducted on animal models, which seemed to handle the procedure remarkably well. For its work, the ten-student team won the first place in the Design Day 2009 competition, set up by th!

Last night, at the Metropole Hilton Hotel in London, 20-year-old Rachel Christie made it into history books for winning the title of Miss England 2009 and thus becoming the first black woman ever to do so. At the same time, Christie, niece of the famous gold medalist Linford Christie, also became the first Miss England with high hopes of winning a medal in the 2012 Olympics, as The Telegraph can confirm. Speaking of her win, Christie said she was surprised she was actually crowned Miss England, despite the fact that, before the pageant, bookies had her as the favorite. Being black and becoming the first black woman to hold the beauty title means a lot for Christie, since she hopes other girls her age will find in her example the motivation to pursue her dreams no matter the race. In this sense, her winning was a victory, the beauty queen explained after she was crowned Miss England. “I don’t know why so few black girls enter. I think they think they won’t win becaus!

Hollywood has been a big influence on the gaming industry for quite some time now, but only in recent years has this trend become more and more apparent. This is largely due to the big number of game-based movies that have been popping up lately, all of which attaining a fair amount of success, even though some of them didn't do the gaming industry any justice. One of the most interesting titles to appear in the near future is the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time project, which will be basing its action on the game with the same name. The main character will be played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who has already appeared in a number of spy shots without his shirt off, while the princess Tamina will be played by Gemma Arterton. As a lot of gamers know, the prince, named Dastan, and the princess team up to protect an ancient dagger that can release the Sands of Time and, like the name implies, will allow its possessor to reverse time and thus control the whole world. Courtesy of E!

If you are looking for a program to protect your system from various threats nowadays, you'll have to pay attention so that its features include shielding from malware on external hardware devices. Of course, the most common ones that fit for an easy spread of nasties on unprotected systems are the USB drives. They can be the perfect host for a piece of malware, due to their portability and hence the high chances of being connected to more than one system.Their autorun file is generally the one sheltering the command to release the threat on the computer, as it becomes active the moment you plug it into the computer (of course, "autorun" has to be enabled at the other end, and it usually is). But, even with customizing Windows to contain itself from responding automatically to hardware stimuli, there are still chances for the infection to spread.USB Threat Defender has been built to give you confidence in hooking a removable device to your system and thus benefit from the p!
ortability of data and quick access to your information from any computer. Its purpose is to prevent any harm from passing from a removable device to your system and, at the same time, bring to your attention the suspicious files that may affect your privacy. One of the most recent Windows Mobile-based handsets coming from the Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation that made it into the wild is the HTC Leo, which was spotted only two days ago, and which is now making the headlines once again, with far more details on the hardware capabilities and functionalities it should bear when it will come to the market. The first thing that should be mentioned is that the handset won't come in a flip form factor, as previously believed; it will be only a full-touch-capable Windows Mobile device from the company. At the same time, it seems that the phone will arrive on the shelves with the 6.5 flavor of the platform right from the start, which means that it should land at the end of the third quarter or even later. Experts from the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have recently released a new set of statistics, showing that the ratio of alternative energy to fossil fuels noticeably increased in 2008, as opposed to 2007. Wind farms, solar stations, geothermal plants and biofuels increased their presence in the average American home, the report also indicates. However, the consumption of geothermal energy remained roughly the same as the previous year, which is unfortunate, considering that this is, in fact, the most abundant renewable resource we have. For the same time period, the average US household increased its natural gas consumption only slightly, whereas the use of coal and oil, the most polluting fossil fuels, has declined to some extent. The Internet has always been a fast-moving medium with services evolving at a rapid pace and information available almost instantaneously. Twitter has raised the stakes even higher from the rate at which it's gathering new users to the speed at which the information spreads throughout the ecosystem. This is true for services and apps catering to the microblogging platform with desktop clients constantly one-upping each other. Even so, having a new product ready in less than ten days is impressive but this is just what live streaming provider Livestream has managed, launching a new Twitter broadcasting system called TwitCam. Justin.TV, one of the biggest players in the fiercely competitive live streaming market, announced a new product called CamTweet ten days ago, which allows Twitter users to easily set up a broadcast and then share it with their followers. As some of you probably already know, Intel is preparing the launch of its new mainstream processors, most of which are based on the company's next-generation Lynnfield core. These new CPU models have been designed for the company's LGA 1156 socket, meaning that motherboard makers will have their work cut out for them, trying to gain more market share with the new boards. On that note, it appears that we now have a more complete image of what is to come from the Santa Clara, California-based chip maker. According to a recent news article that surfaced on the HKEPC website, the chip maker's first wave of LGA 1156-compatible processors will include three models, the quad-core Core i5 750, the Core i7 860 and the Core i7 870. The Core i7 models are designed for high-end systems and boast speeds of 2.8GHz and 2.93GHz, respectively, as well as an integrated dual-channel DDR3-1333 memory controller, 8MB of L3 cache and a TDP of 95W. The Core i7 models features support for Hype!

Santa Clara, California-based Intel has recently announced a new list of prices for its desktop processors, providing users with some more affordable price tags for its Core 2 generation of processors. The move, which was made just before the earnings announcement expected from Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday, allows Intel to better position its previous-generation processors, as the company plans to update its CPU lineup with the introduction of the much-anticipated Lynnfield models.According to Intel's recent CPU price change notification, the Core 2 Quad Q9400, running at 2.66GHz, was cut 14 percent to US$183 from US$213, while the Q8300, clocked at 2.5GHz, had its price cut by 11 percent to US$163 from US$183. The world's leading chip maker made most price adjustments to its line of Core 2 Quad processors, including the Q9300 and the Q8300, but the company also reduced the prices of its dual-core chips for low-end systems. According to the price change, the pricing of!

According to the latest news on the Web, a new HTC device is getting ready to show up in Verizon Wireless' lineup, namely the XV6975, which has just been approved by the Global Certification Forum (GCF). Although for the time being little is known about the new smartphone, the “XV” part in its name suggests that it will come to the mobile phone carrier, the same as other HTC devices bearing the XV naming matrix did in the past. Moreover, the phone should come to the operator's lineup as a Windows Mobile-powered smartphone, and there are some voices over the Web that suggest this device would look very much like the newly launched HTC Touch Pro2, and that the two would actually be one and the same handset. Moreover, the new handset is reportedly a world phone, as it comes with quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and single-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 2100 MHz. The fact that the new Windows Mobile-based handset is a world phone is more than obvious, as Verizon features !

Although you spend a lot of money on hardware components (RAM, CPU or mainboard) to make your system faster and easier to work with, the results do not always depend on these investments. I am not arguing with the fact that an operating system that runs on 2GHz dual-CPU with 2GB RAM is a lot faster than one running under a 2GHz CPU with 512 RAM, but sometimes the differences are in the way Windows is customized to operate. And here I’m referring to the number of programs that run in startup, the applications that we start and which require a lot of memory usage and “eat” up system resources. The smaller the number of apps in startup, the faster your Windows will boot. And let’s say you cannot simplify this list; in this case at least add a delay after each application starts, or create an order for the items to start. This way, CPU and memory usage is redirected to both programs and your operating system, rather than only to the former. InControl was designed to b!

The fact that Yahoo is working on a new homepage design hasn't been news for almost a year now, as it was announced and previewed in September 2008. Since then a few users have been getting the revamped page as part of the testing phase before it was ready to roll out for the masses. And now, finally, the day has come when the new homepage design is officially released, in the US for the time being but coming to other countries around the world gradually. The first question that comes to mind is, is it any good? Well, it is better than the previous version, with a much cleaner design, less clutter and more customization options. The search section is also more prominent, a peculiar move for a company saying it's trying to move away from the search business and has been trying to sell it to Microsoft for years now. The biggest change to the design, however, is the new My Favorites section that replaces the Yahoo Services bar. This may seem a little counterintuitive for !
a company with the number of products Yahoo has but it is, in fact, in line with its current strategy of focusing on some core services and closing the ones that underperform. And even Yahoo says that most people only used a handful of the services listed so why not let them add the ones they actually use. Currently, there are 65 apps designed for the My Favorites area with w...

A new study has recently revealed that it may be more constructive to plant trees in the middle of the street using a more widely spaced layout plan than cramming many in the same place. According to the paper, while those plants with some distance between them are very efficient at soaking up carbon dioxide, those that are close to each other have the potential to trap dangerous gases in the “canyons” that are formed when they are planted. Cities in Europe, where trees are planted both in the middle of the road and on the sidewalk in high densities, are cited as negative examples in the paper. A team of researchers from Switzerland and Germany conducted this study along routes known as “urban canyons,” streets that are surrounded by very tall and closely packed buildings on both sides. The most important analyzed factor was the influence that the trees themselves had on ventilation and pollution levels in their surrounding areas. Additionally, the experts compleme!

Swiss expert Christof Gromke, at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, in Davos, and German scientist Bodo Ruck, from the University of Karlsruhe Institute for Hydromechanics, also looked ...

Everyone who has been outside while it was raining knows that the droplets falling to the ground are not of the same size. In fact, the differences between them are quite remarkable. And, while this is pleasing to experience first-hand, it has left physicists completely in the dark. Some theories trying to explain this phenomenon exist, but a new high-definition video, captured with cameras able to record up to 1,000 frames per second, shows an interesting “parachute effect.” This breaks individual droplets into many smaller ones, of various sizes. The experiments were carried out while the droplet was falling through an ascending air stream. The air drag forced it to compact into the shape of a pancake, and then in that of a balloon, with the open end facing downwards. Eventually, as the drop neared the ground, and the air drag increased, instabilities at the molecular level broke off the rim of the balloon, and “exploded” the droplet into what looked like an expl!
oding parachute. The end result was that the droplet spread smaller drops of various sizes all around it in mid-air, which might account for the variations in size we see in rain. Physicists are happy with the new evidence because it saves them the trouble of having to perform extremely complex equations to account for differences i...

Shortly after managing to fix the helium leaks that forced engineers to shut down the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) last September, project managers discovered another fluke. This time, they identified two areas of vacuum leak, in regions of the particle accelerator that needed to be cooled near absolute zero. The new damage will set back the scheduled re-commissioning date by at least two to three months, which should give engineers sufficient time to fix everything. The reason why the new repairs will take so long is because the two areas need to be heated first, so that repairmen can near it. There is currently no way to allow the crew access in these segments at the ultracold temperatures at which they operate. According to officials at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the owner of the LHC, the structure will be ready to accelerate new beams of particles in late November 2009, Wired informs. Last year, when it was first announced that the accelerat!

In a new research paper, appearing in the latest issue of the journal Meteoritic & Planetary Science, a team of experts from the Monash University, led by Dr. Maria Lugaro, proposes a new explanation for why the chemical composition of the early solar system looks the way it does in geological records. The scientists think that the traces of radioactive nuclei, which have been identified in the earliest meteorites to hit the Earth, more than four billion years ago, may have come from a nearby dying giant star, which is estimated to have been about six times the mass of the Sun.The new find could change our perspective on the solar system as a whole, Dr. Lugaro believes. “We have known about the early presence of these radioactive nuclei in meteorites since the 1960s, but we do not know where they originated from. The presence of the radioactive nuclei has been previously linked to a nearby supernova explosion, but we are showing now that these nuclei are more compatib!

Aneuploidy is a very common genetic accident in human fetuses, which occurs when an excessively large number of chromosomes is formed. The results of this genetic malfunction include common genetic disorders (such as the Down Syndrome), as well as pregnancy loss in the most extreme cases. A new study by the US Department Of Energy's (DOE) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has recently shed some light on what precisely causes the many chromosomes to form.Working together with colleagues from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, scientists at LBNL's Life Sciences Division observed pregnant mice females, and noticed something peculiar. If the mother's egg had just one mutation in a single copy of the Bub1 gene, then that mouse gave birth to fewer live offspring than others in a control group, which exhibited no such mutation. The find is remarkable, because basic genetics shows that, in order for an organism to be compromised, both copies of a gene in a chromos!
ome need to be mutated in exactly the same manner.“But we found that a mutation in a single copy of the Bub1 gene can have an impact â€" and this is not the case with most genes. With Bub1, if you have one bad gene and one healthy gene, there's a problem,” LBNL Life Sciences Di...

There seems to be some secret understanding according to which women must do most of the chores around the house, while the men handle things like changing a light bulb, fixing the drain and occasionally cooking a meal. Still, no matter how much men have evolved in terms of sharing chores with their partners, the one thing that has not changed is their aversion to them, a recent poll cited by the Daily Mail reveals. Conducted by Spontex in the UK, the recent poll has uncovered a well-known, even if often ignored truth: men find housecleaning just as boring as most women do. The only difference is that, while the latter see it as their duty in some way, the former couldn’t care less about who gets upset if they fulfill their obligations around the house. Moreover, as the poll reveals, men would resort to literally any method to get out of a tricky situation â€" which usually implies them dusting â€" including pretending not to hear what they’ve been told, and turning to!
flattery and employing hiding “techniques.” Aside from the now-usual excuses of feeling ill, having work to do, or the highly popular “you do it so much better than me” line, an overwhelming majority of queried men (59 percent) admits to plainly pretending not to hear when its help is asked for aroun...

Spanish experts from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), working together with colleagues from the University of Cambridge (UC), have managed to discover the genetic circuit that in essence controls the behavior of stem cells and determines traits such as differentiation and pluripotency. UPC School of Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering of Terrassa (ETSEIAT) Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering Lecturer Jordi Garcia Ojalvo has been the one who has discovered the mechanism. The new finds cast some doubts over established knowledge, which has it that stem cells are in their natural state inert, in that they require an external stimulus in order to start differentiating into the various types of cells that make up the human body. This ability to turn themselves into any other type of cells is called pluripotency, and is the trait that geneticists rely on to eventually develop a technology that would enable health care providers to grow artificial or!
gans that would replace damaged ones. Working together with Alfonso Martínez Arias's research group at the UC, Garcia-Ojalvo determined that the stem cells were not naturally in a neutral, static state, but that they changed constantly. Additionally, the two discovered that a subset of stem cells existed that ensured a level ...

Hollywood is seemingly increasing its influence in the gaming industry, as almost every major blockbuster release that borrows the story, elements or characters from pop culture gets a video-game treatment in order to further reach into the mainstream audience.Such is the case with Spider-Man 3, the latest iteration in the film and video game series featuring the famous comic book super hero. What was one of the most successful movies in the franchise has also received a video game, published by Activision, which arrived on a multitude of platforms, from the more powerful Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to the Nintendo Wii, DS or GameBoy Advance. The DS title was one of the most praised versions of the game, as it was handled by Vicarious Visions and intensively used the touch screen and the stylus of the device for the gameplay. In their desperate bid to avoid what is known as “office dress” and thus spark talk that they’re trying to emulate their male counterparts in everything, many women have decided to go with their feminine side and dress accordingly at the workplace. According to Maureen Rice of the Daily Mail, far from making them dress prettier and look better, they have thus fallen into the other extreme, that of dressing for work as if for a day out shopping or, even worse, clubbing with gal pals. No one should be judged by the way they dress, Rice says, yet everybody is. We live in a world where clothes say the first words before we even get the chance to reach out our hand and introduce ourselves and, for women, the task of dressing appropriately for each occasion is all the more difficult, since they will always be judged by their peers depending on their clothes first. As recent studies have shown, in an office working environment, picking the wrong shoes, or the wrong length !
of the skirt (not to mention décolletage) can have a negative impact on others’ perspective on the abilities and the professionalism of the woman in question. “The way we dress for work has become a minefield. We live in less formal times, where dress codes have been all but abandoned and the old...

Undoubtedly, few are the women who have never dyed their hair at home, either by themselves or with the help of a trusted friend. With this in mind and in the context of the still dire economical situation, it’s no wonder that DIY home beauty kits have started becoming popular again, to the detriment of professional salons and clinics. Still, experts warn, women must be very careful about the products they use so that they don’t end hurting themselves, the Daily Mail points out. According to recent surveys, more and more women are skipping going to a beauty salon in favor of getting all the treatments done at home. Of course, we’re no longer talking of the regular dyeing operation or of waxing the hair on the legs, although these two can carry serious risks. Today, women can remove unwanted hair with laser machines or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices, while they can also buy advanced chemical peels online or in beauty stores. From this to suffering burns or adverse!
reactions is just a step, experts say for the Mail. What women can’t seem to comprehend when it comes to these home treatments is that, even if the manufacturer labels them safe for home use, the chances that they are not compatible with their type of skin or that they carry inevitable risks co...
