HTTP:: New Approach to Boosting General Happiness
--------
Happiness is a word many of us use to describe emotional states, and its meaning is clear to everyone. But, among scientists, determining a clear definition of the word proves to be a bit of a head scratcher. Finding out where the trait comes from is even more difficult. Some schools of thought propose a genetic origin for happiness, as in parents passing on predispositions to their children, while others believe that people develop the state of mind over the years. There are of course those who propose a mixed approach to determining its origins, and argue for a combination of the two theories. Recently, at the World Congress on Psychosomatic Medicine, held in Torino, Italy, the current progress in the field of happiness research has been discussed. Washington University in St. Louis (WUSL) professor of Psychiatry Robert Cloninger, speaking at the scientific gathering, presented new data on the correlations that were inferred to exist between the state of mind and inherit!
ed personality traits. He also illustrated how the connections can be changed over the years, as the genetic predispositions shift or evolve, AlphaGalileo reports. The professor argued that enhancing positive emotions, character development, life satisfaction, and spirituality should be one of the key focuses of psychiatry today, rather t...

This week Lily Allen's views on file-sharing have been the hot topic. While some agree with her calls to 'save' the industry from a fate worse than death, others did not subscribe to the doomsday scenario. One of those is UK musician Dan Bull who has written a brilliant song-come-open letter to Miss Allen. We hope you enjoy it.

--------
Twitter has seen some spectacular growth earlier this year and, thanks to the number of celebrities that started using it, a lot of attention from the mainstream audience. But, while the users skyrocketed, there was an increasing number of nay-sayers doubting that the microblogging service could sustain the growth or even maintain it. Now, despite closing a huge funding round, new numbers from Hitwise show that the detractors may have been right and Twitter has not only stopped growing but actually dipped in visits and interest over the summer. Spurred by Twitter's new $1 billion valuation, Hitwise general manager for global research, Bill Tancer, decided to share some traffic numbers to put the new funding in perspective. In his report he found that Twitter's share of the overall Internet traffic has been dropping lately. Having reached a peak of 0.20 percent of the traffic in June 2009 it has since dropped to 0.17 percent. Still, just one year ago it was at 0.01 percent!
so the site has definitely grown tremendously in the past year. A part of the decline can be explained by users moving to desktop or mobile clients and dropping the site but not leaving the service altogether. This is most definitely true as third-party clients account for a significant part of Twitter's traffic, as much as 50 percent, and are not taken into consideration by these repor...

Verizon Wireless has not left aside its plans to offer its users the possibility to taste the latest Palm device on the market, the webOS-based Pre. Previous rumors suggested that the carrier might have moved over the Pre, being interested in other high-end handsets, yet it seems that, starting with January 2010, the smartphone will become available for purchase on its airwaves. According to a recent piece on E-Commerce Times, Big Red and Palm are currently negotiating the introduction of the Pre in Verizon's offering, and it seems that they cannot agree on how much the carrier will subsidize the handset. However, Jim Gerace, executive director of media relations at Verizon, has reportedly stated that the phone will be launched in January 2010. At the same time, an issue might also be the presence on the market of both a Verizon app portal and a Palm storefront. Allen Nogee, a principal analyst at In-Stat, E-Commerce Times notes, stated the following: “Verizon has been !
talking about its VCast Store, and Palm is setting up its own app store, so that could be the problem. It's possible that Verizon wants to keep the number of app stores available to subscribers to a minimum.” Whatever issues the negotiations between the two companies might face at the moment, the one thing that shapes up p...

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Physics have all the reason to be joyful. They recently received a $431,200 grant from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) that will be used to purchase an advanced, highly specialized imaging system, the first of its kind to be installed in Alabama. The planned X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy System (XPS) has the ability to image objects at the microscale, and experts at the university are thrilled to have this chance to conduct more research on tiny objects and interactions.“The UAB acquisition of imaging XPS will create a unique experimental facility that should have many positive implications for advancing research in many disciplines, from physics and chemistry to biomedical engineering and materials science,” explains physicist Yogesh Vohra, PhD. Google Maps is a great place for finding local businesses or places of interest but users may soon get more than what they bargained for as the company may start adding ads inside the maps themselves. It is currently experimenting with several formats and one idea that may find its way to users in the US and Australia soon is to have the logos of paying, established brands show up indicating their location on the map. Several reports indicate that Google may be close to launching an experimental program as early as next week. For anyone following the company this shouldn't be too much of a surprise as Google has a big number of small experiments for most of its products all the time and is probably running several right now. The program will debut in the US and Australia and already seems to be live in Japan according to Read Write Web. "We are continually looking at ways of displaying more and more useful geographic info on Google Maps. One area in which we are looking!
to experiment is showing some easily recognisable brands and logos on the map to help people more easily find what they are looking for, but this is still in experimental form and we don't have any further details to share right now," a Google spokeswoman told the Sydney Morning Herald. A little over a month ago, new addition to the “Twilight” cast Boo Boo Stewart was saying in a televised interview he knew for certain Summit Entertainment was planning on splitting the final book, “Breaking Dawn,” in two. Studio bosses later denied the rumor but, according to E! Online, this continues to be a possibility the studio is exploring â€" and that will come true if the cast agrees to a fifth film. According to well placed sources, Melissa Rosenberg has already agreed to pen the script for “Breaking Dawn,” the final novel in Stephenie Meyer’s series of books. The scribe herself is keeping mum on the subject, saying they are still in negotiations, but insiders vouch the deal is done and is only pending a confirmation from the entire cast that they will return for the fifth film, so that Rosenberg can get to work. “Execs over at Summit are going back to the idea of splitting BD [‘Breaking Dawn’] into two films. Even before Michael Jackson passed away in June this year from what seems to have been an overdose on Propofol, a powerful anesthetic the singer used to treat insomnia, AEG Live took a lot of heat in the media. All that will hopefully change when Sony Pictures releases the “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” docu-film, Tim Leiweke, president of AEG, said the other day as the first tickets for the October release were made available. The concert organizers for the 50 shows that were supposed to take place in London this summer have been blamed for anything from fueling the singer’s drug habit to deliberately signing him for the comeback when they knew he couldn’t make it. The release of “This Is It,” comprised of footage shot during rehearsals at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, will finally set the record straight on all those rumors and show that what AEG did was to actually offer Michael one last chance. “Some of the things that people have said about us, whi!

Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless unveiled recently a few more details on its plans for deploying the upcoming 4G network based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. According to the company, the rollout will be made on a wide range of markets at once, and not on one market at a time during a long period of time. The deployment “will be as close to all-at-once as possible. We want to give our customers a significant footprint,” is what the company's SVP and CTO, Tony Melone stated in an interview with InformationWeek. The first LTE rollouts, as many of you might already know, are slated for next year, with almost 30 markets to see LTE connectivity before 2011 is here. The new approach is meant to eliminate the long period of time it would take for the technology to become available in some of the areas around the country, as it happened with the deployment of Verizon's 3G network, which has just reached San Diego County. Even so, it should be noted that the !
carrier will have to invest more on the new approach, and will also have to make use of a lot of technical resources. On the other hand, Verizon already stated that it planned on playing big with LTE. The company will be one of the first to deploy the technology around the world, as well as the first one to have it available com...

The actress says nothing of being contacted for the part but she leaves no doubt as to her answer if she were. “I think what has happened to that franchise is amazing. TLC scored a major hit with the “Jon & Kate Plus 8” reality show, as it proved with each episode that the combination of traditional family values and the sweet chaos derived from raising 8 infants was a sure winner. However, things changed when the Gosselins announced their divorce and the ensuing media scandal shed light on the marital issues that had been tearing the marriage apart. Now, numbers seem to indicate that America has tired of “Jon & Kate,” Radar Online says. Ratings for the most recent episode of the reality show have reached an all-time low, showing beyond any doubt that Jon and Kate Gosselin were popular with audiences only because they somehow managed to put up a united front. This, in turn, has led to speculation that the show might actually be living out its final moments since the next logical step for TLC would be to cancel it altogether. “Here’s another reason to support family values: Happy marriage = high ratings. If there was any doubt that Hans Pandeya, Global Gaming Factory X's CEO, had as much chance of getting his hands on the Pirate Bay as winning the Super Bowl, yet again, a major issue has popped up putting another serious damper on any would-be transaction. A Swedish court has seized control over all of his personal assets pending a decision on whether he owes former business partner Johan Sellstrom about $400,000. The court so far has sided with the latter and has blocked Pandeya's properties until the appeal. "I was pleased to find that the Court has ruled that my promissory note is indeed genuine," Sellstrom told Cnet. "More importantly, they agreed that a lien against Pandeya's net assets had to be put into effect immediately in order to prevent evasive measures on his part. I look forward to a hasty process in order to minimize the damage that Hans Pandeya has caused the share holders of GGF and wish them all the luck with the acquisition." The court will now hold P!

While having his possessions seized is bad enough for him personally, it may also affect the Pirate Bay deal, which was looking highly unlikely already as Pandeya has yet to raise the money required. Each Group of 20 (G20) meeting attracts numerous anti-globalization protesters, and authorities have a hard time keeping things under control. Violent clashes occur very often, and the police have been forced to deploy new weapons to the urban battlefield, in addition to the usual water cannons and rubber bullets. As the current G20 meeting takes place in Pittsburgh, the United States, authorities have for the first time used a Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), commonly known as a sound weapon, or sonic cannon, on the population, LiveScience reports. “There was an array of sound amplifiers used during the demonstration. The Poconos police brought the long-range acoustic device with them, but I don't know whether it was used,” said Pittsburgh Bureau of Police representative Lavonnie Bickerstaff. The LRAD is essentially designed for long-range communication, say experts from the American Technology Corporation (ATC), which developed the weapon. Its goals is to deliver !
an “unmistakable warning” over long distances, in a way that cannot be ignored. Unlike conventional systems used at protests, the LRAD can be heard clearly and intelligibly even hundreds of feet away, at the back of the crowd. “The LRAD basically is the ability to communicate clearly from 300 meters to 3 kil...

For about a month now, several photos that claim to be artwork for Janet Jackson’s 2010 music album have been making the rounds on the Internet. Intrigued just like Janet fans who did not know what to believe, Wendy Williams did her research and found out the pics came from the “Beyonce Hoaxer,” 26-year-old computer arts student Matthew Zeghibe. The only thing that Williams forgot to do, though, was to actually do her research on how come those pictures got out in the wild, Matthew tells Softpedia. Williams appeared on her show (video of it below) to say that she saw the photos on the Internet on many celebrity blogs and decided to find out whether they were official artwork for the album or fanmade. Michael Jackson is often described by those who knew or worked with him as the ultimate dreamer. As interviews with him also reveals, the late King of Pop truly believed in a better future that could be made possible if all of us acknowledged the changes that need to be made and then operate them accordingly. According to The Sun and an older taped interview, Michael also believed he could have changed Hitler had he been given the chance. Speaking with close friend Rabbi Shmuley Boteach who, in turn, spoke to the tabloid, Michael revealed he held Hitler in high regard as far as his orator skills went. To be able to get so many people to see things your way as Hitler did must only mean the person in question is nothing short of a genius, Michael believed. Be that as it may, the singer did not condone Hitler’s actions or ideology but rather thought he could have changed him because no one is born bad. “Hitler was a genius orator. HTTP:: Earthquakes Adversely Affect the Human Brain
--------
According to a recent scientific study, it may be that experiencing (and surviving) an earthquake may have a number of side-effects on people, including damage to their brain function, even though they remain physically healthy. The investigation was conducted on survivors of the Wenchuan, China earthquake, which took place on May 12, 2008, and was led by an international team of scientists, featuring researchers from China, the United States and the United Kingdom. The main goal of the research was to assess whether and how the human brain adapted to extreme amounts of emotional stress, such as that inflicted during an earthquake, when all reason was usually abandoned, and people experienced sights they never though possible before. Until now, such researches have only been conducted on animals. The team published its finds in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), ScienceDaily reports. In those studies, the limbic, para!
limbic, striatal, and prefrontal structures inside the brain proved to play an important part in determining a test subjects' response to stress, pain, and danger. Other investigations, conducted on humans, focused only on patients who had been clinically diagnosed with the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These research...

The age of science-fiction may not remain the product of overactive imagination for long. Scientists are already working on a method of extracting images people have seen, by tapping directly into their brain. After completing a modeling program that shows precisely how images are represented in the human brain, the researchers have moved towards attaching pictures to recorded patterns of neural activity, extracted directly from test subjects' cortices, Wired reports. The scientists working on these techniques admit that their technology is still decades away from completion and practical uses, but say that, one day, dream-readers and devices that will enable people to control their computers thoughtlessly may exist. “It’s what you would actually use if you were going to build a functional brain-reading device,” University of California in Berkeley (UCB) neuroscientist Jack Gallant, who is involved in the new research, explains. He led the research alongside UCB pos!
tdoctoral researcher Thomas Naselaris. In its earlier works, the team managed to identify pictures within a limited set by analyzing neural patterns inside the human brain. The experts' recent investigation is based partially on these studies, which are now more refined and sophisticated. There are some differences between the two methods...

Though no clear evidence documenting the existence of dark matter was ever produced, astronomers believe it exists because, if not, they simply cannot explain phenomena in the Universe. Since the type of matter was first proposed, a number of years ago, all sorts of instruments have been mounted on telescopes, in an attempt to discover traces of it. In spite of experts' best efforts, only moderate success was achieved, and the existence of dark matter was never proven. Now, a new device, of which a prototype is already finished, promises to finally shed some light on this mystery. Developed by an international team of scientists, based at the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR), in Spain, and the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), in France, the new instrument is, its creators say, a “scintillating bolometer.” “One of the biggest challenges in physics today is to discover the true nature of dark matter, which cannot be directly observed â€" even though it seems to m!

In the largest clinical trial aimed at observing the effects of a new, combo vaccine against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), results were only moderately successful. Two older vaccines were combined in the current studies, so that scientists could assess their efficiency when working together. But the effort was not a complete failure, scientists say. The new medication, they note, was effective in reducing the number of people who got infected with HIV by more than 30 percent, which was a huge step forward from previous results, Nature News reports. “I don't think anybody knows why this worked the way it did. It's the largest step forward that's ever occurred in the HIV-vaccine field, but there's a tremendous amount of more work that will need to be done,” immunologist Dan Barouch, who is an expert at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston, Massachusetts, says of the results. The new investigation was conducted on more than 16,000 Thailand reside!

The investigation was sponsored by the US Army Surgeon General, and was conducted starting from 2003 by the Thai health ministry. --------
Valve Software, which has developed Left 4 Dead 2, and Electronic Arts, which is set to distribute the video game, have appealed to the refusal of Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification to rate the title, which effectively means that it cannot be marketed or sold in that country. The board has said that the game features too much violence and that most of it is directed at beings that can be assimilated to humans. At the moment, Left 4 Dead 2 is also under a ratings' review in the United Kingdom and in New Zealand and can be sold in all the other territories. In Australia, there is no 18+ rating for video games, even if movies get one, which means that anything that is too strong for a MA 15+ rating is effectively banned. Now, Valve is seeking a re-evaluation of the game, which it has created, but it is not clear whether the developer has made any changes to the video game in order to secure a rating that would allow it to be sold in Australia. Tiffany S!
teckler, who is a spokesperson for Electronic Arts, has told GamesStop Australia that, “It’s funny that a place like Australia, which has come up with some pretty violent material in the past with something like Mad Max, can effectively ban video games for the same reason.” Australia has also issued bans for ti...

--------
Naturalists and biologists warn those suffering from arachnophobia that this autumn may be a thing of nightmares. On account of excellent breeding conditions and suitable climate, much more spiders and daddy longlegs (crane flies) will be spawned. Last autumn was very rainy, so crane-fly larvae had sufficient decaying leaf matter to consume and grow. Additionally, this summer was temperate, without significant temperature variations, which constituted another advantage for spider reproduction. The insect charity Buglife says that the larger number will be beneficial to the environment, but not that much to people suffering from extreme arachnophobia. Insect populations, in spite of being virtually all around us, have apparently been in a constant decline over the past few years, and Buglife experts say that this year's autumn may grant them a respite. The charity's Chief Executive, Matt Shardlow, says that, because of the excellent conditions recorded in last year's autum!
n, crane flies, which live just below the surface, may have laid enough eggs to trigger the first population growth in years. This means that UK homes and gardens could see a lot more of the daddy longlegs this fall than ever before. Even if they appear disgusting to some people, the tiny insects are actually of tremendous use to Mother N...

Experts at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) have recently demonstrated that variations in climate over the Northern Hemisphere in the past 12,000 years are tightly linked to changes recorded all the way to the tropics, and as far as Peru. In a research paper published in the latest issue of the top journal Science, the team reveals that glacier advancements in Europe and North America, recorded thousands of years ago, have affected weather patterns on and around the tropics, the National Science Foundation (NSF) reports. “The results bring us one step closer to understanding global-scale patterns of glacier activity and climate during the Little Ice Age,” UNH glacial geologist Joe Licciardi, who has also been the lead author of the new study, explains. The Little Ice Age is the name given to a period between 1650 AD and 1850 AD, when glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere reached their modern-day maximum. Since then, the formations have been constantly receding, as !
more and more greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide are being pumped into the atmosphere. Geoscientists are very keen on deciphering precisely how glaciers used to move over the past 12 millennia, since the advent of agriculture, and a more modern human society. Working out is an important part of her life, as also is always staying healthy. Jessica Biel, former “Seventh Heaven” alum, will now have the chance to put her amazing physical condition to the test, as she has just pledged to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity, thus joining other celebrities who have already signed on for the cause, TMZ informs. The climb comes as part of the Summit on the Summit campaign, which is meant to raise awareness on the life-threatening, clean-water crisis present in Africa and many other countries around the world. By lending herself to the cause and, in doing so, getting media attention to her physical feat, Biel hopes to draw attention to the crisis and motivate people to make a change for the better. “Jessica Biel and ‘Transformers’ hottie Isabel Lucas have just committed to go to Tanzania to conquer Africa’s highest peak in early January... and of course, it’s all for a good cause. The two are part of a program called Sum!

According to leading experts, it may be that the century-old habit of spanking children may do them more harm than good. It may, indeed, make them move more hastily, or even teach them not to do something (for a while, at least), but it could also lower their intelligence coefficient (IQ), scientists report. The recent investigation, which was conducted on several hundred US children, shows a clear correlation between a lot of spanking and a drop in IQ levels later on in life, LiveScience reports. “All parents want smart children. This research shows that avoiding spanking and correcting misbehavior in other ways can help that happen,” University of New Hampshire (UNH) researcher Murray Straus, who has been involved in the current research, explains. In order to address concerns that the children in the study may have had their IQs influenced by other factors, such as less education opportunities or a lower inherited intelligence, Straus reveals that, when compiling t!
he results of the new study, he took other factors into account too, such as the parents' socio-economic status. “You can't say it proves it, but I think it rules out so many other alternatives; I am convinced that spanking does cause a slowdown in a child's development of mental abilities,” Straus says. The expert collaborated...

With Halo 3: ODST released and players currently exploring both the New Mombasa-based, single-player title and the new Firefight cooperative-multiplayer experience, the only Halo-themed video game that is announced and set to arrive in the coming years is Halo: Reach, the project on which Bungie is working and that will serve as a prequel to the whole trilogy, while also telling the story of how the planet Reach initially fell to the Covenant onslaught. Halo 3: ODST and Reach are at different ends of the timeline of the franchise, but one thing that might unite them is how Bungie aims to tell stories in both of them. ODST has featured a side narrative, told through audio logs, called Sadie's Story, which is not connected to the usual blood-and-guts tales of warrior bravado and loss that Halo deals with. Some players might not even get the whole picture unless they explore the city in the game pretty thoroughly. Curtis Creamer, who is an executive producer on Halo 3: ODST !
at Bungie, told Gamasutra when talking about narrative that, “Since we were on a really tight development schedule, we knew that we would need some help in telling a really interesting story. Accord to leading paleontologists, a new, exceptionally preserved dinosaur fossil discovered in north-eastern China represents the earliest known feathered animal at this point. Estimated to have lived about 150 million years ago, the animal was petrified in mint condition, thus providing experts with the ability to investigate some of the unique characteristics of this amazing dinosaur, the BBC News reports. The feathered creature is considerably older than the ancestor of all birds, a dinosaur known as Archaeopteryx, which was first discovered in Germany. The find was made by Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing Professor Xu Xing and his team. In a paper published in the latest issue of the renowned scientific journal Nature, the expert reveals that the old theory that stated that birds evolved from dinosaurs was troubled by the fact that no feathers older than Archaeopteryx's had been ever found. The journal entry thus provides conclusive evidence that the evolution i!

Professor Xu says that one of the new dinosaur species found in China, named Anchiornis huxleyi, is entirely covered in feathers, from the tip ...
