HTTP:: Google Introduces Flat Rate Search Ads for Small Businesses
--------
Google's AdWords advertising platform has been the cornerstone of its business and to this day 97 percent of Google's revenue comes from advertising. The company pretty much turned search advertising into a legitimate business model and now dominates the market. Even so, as Google's CEO Eric Schmidt recently pointed out, a tech company that stops growing dies. So Google is experimenting with new ad products aimed at markets that may not have traditionally considered search ads and is now trying to lure small local businesses with a flat rate search advertising product, as AdAge found. Currently Google uses a keyword bidding system to determine which ads to serve in its search engine. This has several advantages as the system is very flexible in terms of how much an advertiser spends and where his ads show up. If understood and used properly it has a lot of potential but the problem is that it's a rather complicated system and deploying it can be a more complex task. "Wh!
en we talk to small businesses, they don't always want to know what an auction is, how to create an ad, or bid on keywords, it's complicated, so our goal has been to, 'How can we make this really simple for them where they just pay a flat fee per month,'" Susan Wojcicki, Google VP of product management, said. So Google set ...

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has announced today that it has created the official Qt port to Maemo 5 and that it has also published an initial Technology Preview release. According to the company, the new port is aimed at enabling developers to use Qt to build apps for the upcoming Nokia N900 device, while also ensuring that the software solutions can be easily ported to all platforms supported by Qt, including the next Maemo 6 release, Symbian and Windows Mobile. The new Qt port on Maemo 5, the handset vendor states, has been designed specifically to fit the Maemo 5 environment, the operating system that will power the soon-to-be-launched Nokia N900 Internet Tablet. The port is based on the upcoming 4.6 version of Qt, which is expected to be released in final form in the first quarter of next year. “With this announcement and our upcoming port of Qt to the Symbian platform, we will quickly see Qt established as a leading framework for mobile application developmen!

The popular music streaming service Spotify is just closing in on a year. With all of the hype it generated and the actual successes it enjoyed it would be easy to assume that it's been around for longer. But CEO Daniel Ek doesn't let it go to his head, saying that despite a great first year there is still a lot of work to be done and the company is in it for the “long haul.” “Spotify has a long way to go but this continued support from the music industry in the face of a recession and rampant piracy has made the difference and I feel that we are set up to succeed with this kind of willingness to innovate and try new things from the music industry,” the CEO writes. He goes on to list some of the accomplishments the service has managed, despite critics of its business model, but also to make it clear that it is only just getting started and the service but also the business are far from perfect. Still, Spotify is one of Europe's biggest subscription-based services!
, if not the biggest, with hundreds of thousands of customers, and Ek claims that it is one of the biggest generators of digital music sales, this despite most users being unaware that they can actually buy the music with Spotify. However, he believes that this is just a very small beginnin...

Going to show that, indeed, the “Twilight” phenomenon is officially the biggest our society has witnessed in recent years, the Oxford University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, has just announced it might include questions from the novels in the acceptance interview. Stephenie Meyer’s work will thus stand next to that of William Shakespeare for those who seek acceptance to Oxford, MTV’s The Hollywood Crush says. “Your SAT scores aren’t the only thing that could make or break your acceptance into a prestigious university. Turns out one highly regarded institution of higher learning quizzes its applicants on Stephenie Meyer’s hugely popular vampire romance. According to the UK’s Telegraph, Oxford University applicants are as likely to be asked about ‘Twilight’ as they are about the Bard himself, William Shakespeare.” the aforementioned publication informs. For those wondering why Oxford would ever even consider putting Meyer and!
Shakespeare in the same thought together, the answer is simple. While the latter is something that applicants study in school, it casts absolutely no light on the type of person the applicant is, in the sense that it leaves no room for choice. Reading “Twilight” ...

Named after a mythical Phoenician noblewoman, Jupiter's sixth moon, Europa, may be among the safest bets in the solar system, in terms of having the ability to sustain life as we know it, astronomers have recently announced. In the investigations, the experts determined that the massive ocean of liquid water that was flowing underneath the moon's crust might have sufficient amounts of oxygen to allow for the basic processes related to primordial life to take place, Space reports. In spite of promising results obtained through observations of other celestial bodies in the solar system, such as the moon Enceladus, Europa has always remained the best bet for finding life on another celestial body except the Earth. Its ocean is estimated to flow several miles beneath its crust, but scientists argue that it may be sufficiently developed to allow for basic microorganisms to exist. Naturally, organisms powered by exotic chemical reactions involving sulfur and methane are possibl!
e, but highly unlikely. Because the moon is completely covered in oceans, its volume of water may, in fact, be twice as large as that of all our planet's oceans combined. It may be that oxygen forms underground due to large-scale interactions between the water molecules and high-energy photons emanating from the Sun. Ensuing chemical reactions could resul...

Microsoft has confirmed that there is an issue with Windows 7 Homegroup joining of a new machine that causes the latest iteration of the Windows client to invalidate correct passwords and to effectively forbid end users to perform the action. According to the software giant, the error message presented in this type of situations reads: "The password is incorrect." HTTP:: Dead Zones Increase 100 Percent Every 10 Years
--------
Dead zones is a term used to describe areas of the oceans or seas that have been so heavily contaminated with pollutants, that it's virtually impossible for fish and other marine animals to live there. Only some types of algae manage to survive in the toxic conditions, and, by thriving, they consume the short supplies of oxygen that may have remained in the water. A new study, funded by the National Science Foundation, has determined that the number of dead zones around the globe is increasing by 100 percent every decade. Currently, more than 400 have been identified, LiveScience reports. The situation is worse during the summer months, when virtually no lifeforms exist in these areas. And the dead zones are not covering just a few square miles around factories and river mouths, but hundreds or thousands of square miles of shorelines. They can also be found farther out into the sea, depending on how currents flow in the respective region. The NSF research has determined tha!
t the number (not the area) of dead zones in the world's oceans doubles once every ten years, which is a fast-progressing rate, by any standards. This means that pollution continues to flow unimpeded in the water, in spite of international pledges and stricter regulations. Among the factors responsible for...

Despite its ongoing “health problems,” the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) is still apt to take beautiful, high-resolution pictures of the Red Planet. Some 233 recent telescopic observations of the surface yielded thousands of detailed images of various features on the planet, ranging from sand dunes to plateaus, craters and hills. The diversity of shapes and textures present on Mars at this time is, apparently, greater than experts first thought, even after numerous rover and lander missions. The instrument in charge of capturing the amazing snapshots is the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera, which is, in fact, a 0.5-meter reflecting telescope. Singer Taylor Swift has just released the official video for her fourth single off the “Fearless” album, “Fifteen.” Starring real-life friend Abigail Anderson, the video is a cute and endearing rendering of the concept of the track: when you’re 15 years old, you tend to take life as it is, especially when it comes to love. As the song says, at this age, whenever someone says “I love you,” we usually believe them. The video, of course, does its best to keep up with that story. So, after getting over the anxiety of the first day at school, with so many strangers analyzing Taylor’s character from head to toe, she meets Abigail, the girl who will eventually end up being her best friend and who will have her heart broken at 15. Taylor Swift, it has been said, makes music for the young generation and, at best, for those who are past their teen years, but don’t mind allowing themselves to be swept by a wave of melancholia every now and then. In this sense, th!
e video for “Fifteen” is also perfect, what with the change from bright colors to gloomy tones, from sun to autumn rain, from smiles to tears, depending on the mood of the characters shown in it. All in all, a perfect video to bring a smile to your face. As fans â€" and not only...

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft recently photographed the impact crater left behind by the upper stage of the Saturn IVB delivery system that the space agency intentionally crashed on the lunar surface on February 4, 1971. The reason why the deorbiting took place was for scientists to get a glimpse of the internal structure of the Moon. The rocket stage's energy created a series of tremors in the surface that was recorded with seismographs set in place by Apollo 12 astronauts, back in 1969. The distinctive crater is about 35 meters (115 feet) in diameter. The observations were made using the spacecraft's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC), which consists of a pair of narrow-angle cameras (NAC), alongside a single, wide-angle camera (WAC). The high-resolution instrument was specifically designed to be able to detect traces of equipment previously left on the Moon by Apollo astronauts, to photograph landing sites, and to provide further certifica!
tion of the fact that NASA, indeed, landed on the Earth's natural satellite. LRO will make several flybys over Apollo landing areas, at a height of about 31 miles (50 kilometers). The new image reveals a rather deep crater, laden with bright mounds. An ejecta blanket is clearly visible in the images, as it surrounds the edges of the crater. It repr...

Designed and developed by Dan Greuel, SnowChecker is a desktop application based on the Wiki-based Snow Leopard Compatibility website. Thanks to the thousands of users adding compatibility data to snowleopard.wikidot.com, the program can effectively show which apps are fully or partially compatible with Snow Leopard, as well as provide direct links to the websites they’re hosted on. Soon after Apple officially launched Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, a bunch of thoughtful fellows have decided to set into place a Wiki for applications that work with the new OS, applications that are prone to buggy behavior, or even programs that aren’t compatible with OS X 10.6. The web page in question contains a list of applications and their compatibility status with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Users are urged to collaborate by sharing their experience using Mac apps and by adding software that isn’t already listed (that includes different versions). Unfortunately, due to abuse, a regi!

“Spider-Man” has proven so far to be an extremely lucrative franchise, even if somewhat of a critical disappointment. Writer and director Gary Ross is currently working to bring Spider-Man back to life for the fourth installment under the helm of Sam Raimi, but that’s not all Ross will be doing, as he’s also poised to handle the much-hyped Venom spinoff in its entirety, SlashFilm says. Fans of this particular comics know that talk of a Venom film has been making the rounds since about the time the first Spidey flick came out. Either because there was never that much interest in seeing a production that would feature the villain alone, or because there was never money for it, it hasn’t happened yet. Still, things seem to be pointing towards change, as Gary Ross is reportedly on board as both the director and the writer for the upcoming spinoff. “Sony has been developing a Marvel Comics spin-off of the Spider-Man villain Venom for some time now, but I never ac!

The reason why we are able to see objects around us is because photons traveling through the atmosphere readily bounce off obstacles in their path. Some of them enter our eyes, and leave their impressions on the retina, which then transforms the data in electrical impulses and sends them to the brain, for analysis and conversion. Now, MIT experts have put a dent in the way light usually moves, by creating a type of microwave light that can flow losslessly around objects and other obstacles. Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have recently announced that they have managed to create the innovative type of light that could be used in the not-so-distant future to create simple, one-way light connections inside computers, allowing them to work faster and more efficiently. In nature, light is permitted to travel both ways. If a beam is shone on an object, then its reflection will travel backwards, along the same path, PhysOrg reports. “The very fac!
t that reflected beams are allowed to exist, combined with the fact that light at least partially reflects from most objects it encounters, makes optical reflections ubiquitous in nature,” the senior author of a study detailing the find, MIT Physics Professor Marin Soljacic, explains. A new study reveals that TM is successfully used by breast-cancer patients in their struggles to recuperate, and that the approach appears to be functioning to some extent, PhysOrg reports. The paper, which appears in the latest issue of the peer-reviewed, scientific journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, shows that TM reduces stress and improves the personal, overall wellbeing in women practicing it. Their mental health is also reportedly improving, the scientists behind the investigation note. A new scientific study evidenced the fact that the average farm pig could learn to find food with the help of mirror reflections in less than five hours. As this ability pigs had had been proven, experts added it to the small number of species who could recognize themselves in the mirror, which included dolphins, some primates, elephants and magpies. All these animals were either able to observe themselves in the mirror, or to remove marks from themselves, if they saw their reflection. In the experiments, seven out of eight pigs were able to learn how to use a mirror to find a bowl of food. “This is the first demonstration of the ability of pigs to use mirrors. Soon, the US Human Space Flight Plans Committee, informally known as the Augustine Commission, will present its conclusions about the future development avenues NASA could be set on to the Obama Administration. Despite the fact that the panel is charged with rethinking the agency's policies, it seems to be at an impasse itself, as evidenced by the fact that it has not yet ranked possible options, according to their feasibility or sustainability. The group is led by former Lockheed Martin CEO Norm Augustine. The committee held its last video-conference yesterday, in which the final details of the reports it would submit to Obama were discussed. After they turn over the report, the scientists in the commission will essentially have dropped the ball in the president's court. Obama will then have to decide which avenues of space exploration to choose, from only a handful of options. “We did not rate the overall options because, first of all, we were not asked to do that â€" !
and doing it would have required that we apply some sort of judgment as to what the relative weighting of those factors should be,” Augustine says, quoted by Wired. --------
As most of you know, unfurling the genetic material enclosed in each of our cells would result in a six-foot-long strand of DNA. However, inside each cell, all this information remains stored within nuclei that are less than three micrometers in diameter, less than the width of a human hair. Finding out precisely how these molecules are crammed into such a tiny space has been something experts have been working on for a long time, and it would appear that the new investigation method has now finally discovered the answer, Technology Review reports. The method can determine the three-dimensional interactions that take place between the various parts of the genome, essentially hinting at how the genetic material and DNA molecules pack themselves inside the nuclei. Previous studies have already determined the 3D structure of several parts of the genome, but the newly developed instrument is the first to do so on a genome-wide scale, its creators say. “Our technology is kin!

Elephants are not exactly among the stealthiest of animals. In fact, they are fairly large and easy to spot. So, one could ask themselves why it is difficult to number them. The answer is very easy. The pachyderms cover hundreds of miles of land inside parks, and move around over great distances each day. Tracking them down thus becomes very expensive, and requires a lot of manpower to perform. All of these are in short supply in developing countries, so scientists propose installing microphones in the wild to track them down, Wired reports. The acoustical-monitoring technique is derived from programs meant to count birds after individual songs, but it's highly adapted for land use. The team of scientists behind it, which is based at the Cornell University, believes that installing microphones along natural reserves and using specialized software to recognize each individual voice may be a lot cheaper and more effective to do in the long run than driving around over hund!
reds of miles looking for the beasts. The jungles of Central Africa are also a bit difficult to navigate through, especially via jeeps or other vehicles. The Elephant Listening Project is described in more detail in the September issue of the African Journal of Ecology. The method for determining where to install the microphones is fairly easy. T...

Tomorrow, at 7:31 am EDT (1131 GMT), skywatchers and professional astronomers will be able to see for the first time how a spacecraft plunges to its fiery demise, as it slams into the Cabeus crater, at the Moon's south pole. According to the American space agency, a spent Centaurus rocket stage, attached to the Lunar CRater Observation Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) spacecraft, will hit the lunar surface first, followed, a few minutes later, at around 7:35 am EDT (1135 GMT), by the satellite itself. The probe will fly with all its instruments activated and pass straight through the plume of ash that the Centaurus stage will create, Space reports. Experts at NASA hope that the 5,216-pound (2,366-kilogram) rocket stage, which will impact Cabeus while traveling at about 5,600 miles per hour (9,010 kilometers per hour), will lift about 385 tonnes of soil â€" and, hopefully, water-ice â€" from the bottom of the crater. The chemicals that are currently used to power up rocket engines generate a number of toxic compounds when they react with each other, and, for a long time, environmentalists have drawn attention to the fact that, when a shuttle launches, for instance, the ozone layer in the area is depleted by the powerful reactions. Now, experts at the American space agency and the Purdue University are working on a solution, a new type of fuel that is as effective as any other, but more environmentally friendly and also fit for off-world production. In the future, exploratory space missions to the Moon and Mars will definitely take place. Crews going to other planets will need to be able to produce a lot of the resources they would need in their base at the location, because cargo capacities will, arguably, be limited. Therefore, rather than adding extra fuel tanks to a rocket, it would make more sense to produce the fuel on-site. The new compound the NASA/Purdue team is working on is m!

HTTP:: Memory Chips Used as Image Sensors
--------
Digital cameras have moved over the years from being something that only the rich could afford to being a tool of the masses. Prices for the average models can be afforded, and only the top-notch ones remain untouchable for the common people. But experts have been looking for a way to make even cheaper image sensors â€" the most expensive part of a camera â€" ever since the devices first appeared. Now, a group of scientists believes it may have found the solution â€" replacing the sensors with memory chips, but with their lids taken off, NewScientist reports. The team, which is led by engineer Edoardo Charbon, from the Swiss Federal Polytechnic Institute (EPFL), in Lausanne, made its presentation this week, at an imaging conference, held in Kyoto, Japan. The creators of the new devices say that their “gigavision” may very well pave the way for a new generation of mobile-phone cameras, and other inexpensive devices that will offer much clearer and detailed pictures. Ap!
parently, according to the team, the memory chips work well in both dim and bright light, which is, definitely, a plus.
