Certain compounds of silicon, aluminum and oxygen, known as zeolites, are essential to such products as kitty litter, detergents and gasoline, and, as such, important for the modern-day lifestyle we are accustomed to. There are, at this point, about 200 known types of the stuff, but experts have hypothesized for a long time that many other forms of the chemical may exist. Now, some two decades after the idea was first thought of, a team of experts at the Rice University has managed to devise a computational model that shows the wide variety of zeolites that could be out there today. The RU John W. Cox Professor in Biochemical and Genetic Engineering, Michael Deem, has been in charge of the new investigation. The scientist is also a professor of physics and astronomy. In a paper posted in the latest online issue of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Physical Chemistry C, and entitled “Computational Discovery of New Zeolite-Like Materials,” the expert reveals th!
at as much as 2.7 million forms of zeolite-like materials may exist in nature right now. Of that amazing number, some 314,000 are close enough to the known compounds to allow for their synthesis. Deem's main problem at this point is developing a method of converting the hypothetical zeolites into real ones. “A couple of things ha...

Working together with the market-leading supplier of wind-power solutions, Vestas Wind Systems, QinetiQ has recently managed to demonstrate a new wind-turbine blade design that supposedly represents a unique radar mitigation technology for the developing industry. QinetiQ, a renowned technology provider and consultancy to the energy and environmental sectors, and Vestas were funded for this line of work by the Government Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) of the United Kingdom, a press release on the corporation's website announces. “We believe that Stealth Turbine technology could be a genuine game-changer for the renewable energy industry by removing a major barrier to its development,” QinetiQ's Strategic Business Director for Energy and Environment, Mark Roberts, says. The new design, which was recently showcased at a wind farm in Norfolk, England, features a 44-meter prototype turbine blade, which is capable of considerably reducing the radar sig!

With this innovation, the facilities could essentially be taken out of the equation in air traffic control and air defense systems. “This is another great example of QinetiQ applying its expertise in defense technologies to a different sector. For people serving tea on a regular basis, the teapot effect is well known. It appears when the liquid dribbles at low flow rates, causing numerous tea stains on table covers and clothes. Now, experts in France have managed to determine the root cause of this peculiar effect and also to come up with a way of addressing it. The investigators say that they have discovered a way of linking the small world of hydrophobic materials and effects to the large world of fluid dynamics, where inertia is king. When you pour tea from a kettle, it first begins to flow rapidly, and then, as the pressure drops, so does the flow rate. As this happens, the liquid starts taking the shape of the kettle, and then flowing on the sides of the container. The team of experts, led by scientists at the University of Lyon Laboratoire PMCN, and the Ecole Polytechnique LadHyX, has determined that, by coating the spout of the teapot with a super-hydrophobic coating, such as, for instance, with black s!
oot, the liquid flow stops dribbling and running along the sides of the kettle. “Over the recent years, the development of super-hydrophobic materials, exhibiting the so-called Lotus effect, has stirred up the physics of surfaces. Their exceptional water repellency results from the combination of bare hydrophobicity and micro- or nano- st...

It takes courage to work with Disney properties. The well known characters that the company has created over the years are so clearly defined and so pure in their existence that it's hard to put any creative spin on them. And that's just one of the challenges faced by the newly confirmed Nintendo Wii videogame Epic Mickey, the title that aims to tell the story of long forgotten Disney characters living in an alternate world until Mickey Mouse himself shows up. The idea has a lot of potential and it seems that its creators are already thinking about sequels for the game set for 2010.When asked by 1UP about the possibility of putting together a series based on the Epic Mickey concept, Warren Spector, the head of the Junction Point development team, stated that “I don't do anything that isn't extensible. And I will certainly feel like that I have not done my job if we can't make other games in this world with these characters. In my head, I've got two more planned. In the bu!

I had three games planned for Deus Ex, and you see where that got me.”It seems that Spector is also pretty interested in creating other videogames with a Disney cartoon-like sensibility. He talked about how the company now owns rights...

It’s often been said that it’s extremely hard to feel any kind of sympathy towards Hollywood stars, especially as regards their weight and health. For starters, we tend to believe they have it easier than the rest of us just because they have money, which is clearly not the case. Teri Hatcher, for one, the 44-year-old star of “Desperate Housewives,” has to put in a lot of effort to look as awesome as she does, How Celebrities Lose Weight points out. Of course, as fans from back in Hatcher’s James Bond days know, Teri was never on the chubby side. Quite on the contrary, she was remarked from the start for her tall stature, long limbs and flat abdomen, but that’s not to say she mustn’t work really hard to maintain her figure at 44 as well. Moreover, it’s even more complicated for Hatcher to do so, as she’s also a busy mom and an even busier actress, but she does it nonetheless, because her main focus is on staying healthy. “She tries to keep to a low-f!

Far from seeing it as only an add-on that can offer some players a new way of controlling their experience, the company sees the new device, which has not yet received a marketable, catchy name, as a whole new “platform product,” in the words of Shuhei Yoshida, the boss of Sony Worldwide Studios.Speaking to Gamasustra in an interview, Yoshida stated that “We are still in the very early days of motion control development. We have had talks with company management where we discussed whether we should approach as a peripheral or a platform, and we agree that this has huge potential - so we position this as a hardware platform.”In time, most of the titles released for the PlayStation 3 will likely offer support for the new motion tracking wand but Sony is emphasizing that even on launch date, games such as LittleBigPl!
anet will get support for it through a patch while other publishers, like Konami with Resident Evil 5, might offer a revamped version of their titles for those interested in controlling gameplay through motion.Yoshida is also adamant about the fact that the wand is not only a way to attract those who bought t...

Women often find comfort in high-fat foods, especially under circumstances of constant stress. It’s not for nothing that we often see in movies women eating ice cream in the dead of night, straight out of the container, after a breakup, they say. A new study, cited by USA Today, comes to show that, indeed, when suffering from chronic stress, most women will turn to high-fat foods for relief. At the same time, they will also note that their eating habits are spinning out of control and that they need to exercise more will power than before to fight the cravings. Understandably, they will also gain some extra pounds in the same circumstances â€" when it’s overweight and obese women we’re talking about (such was the case with the participants to the aforementioned study), then we have reason for concern. “The women were categorized as having chronic stress if they had ongoing stressful situations such as being unable to pay their rent or mortgage; feeling stuck in !
a job they don’t like; having a spouse or partner who expects too much of them or doesn’t understand them; having a child who isn’t doing well in school; or acting as a family caregiver for someone in poor health. The researchers found that people who had greater chronic stress were more lik...

--------
The worldwide mobile phone market, as many of you might already know, has been greatly impacted by the financial downturn, and it was said on some occasions to be shrinking by about 10 percent during 2009, when compared to the previous year. The third quarter of 2009 has shown some signs of improvement for the market, and it seems that the fourth quarter is expected to be an even better one. Regarding the ongoing quarter of the year, Jake Saunders, ABI Research's VP for Forecasting, stated that, “The outlook for mobile handset markets continues to improve. While 3Q-2009 showed a YoY 6.5% contraction in shipments to 291.1 million, 2009 should close out with only a 4%-5% contraction (to 1,138 million for the year).”More and more mobile phone makers seem to be confident that the fourth quarter of the year will deliver better cash flow due to more robust sales. Starting with the third quarter of the year, markets like North America and Asia-Pacific are already showing signs!
of recovery, driven by enthusiasm for smartphones in the former and by increased interest in upgrades in the latter. When it comes to the market shares handset vendors saw in the third quarter, Nokia remained on the first position with a little more than 37 percent share, followed by Samsung with around 21 perce...

Men and women struggling with their weight and especially those who are constantly looking for a new diet to try out in the hope that, maybe, this time, it will work out, have now new-found hope. A new study has determined that slimmers stand to lose more weight if they make the healthy-diet choice the easy choice, as USA Today informs. What this means is that it’s not enough to just go on a diet, especially if said dietary regime is in sharp contrast with what we’d normally eat. In return, if we choose a diet that does not imply drastic restrictions on our part and, furthermore, set out to lose weight with the help of a friend or relative in the same situation, we actually stand more chances of dropping more pounds than we would otherwise. “Dieters can boost their weight loss if they clean up their act at home and get a partner to lose weight with them, a new study shows. If you want to trim down, you should set up your home to make the healthy choice the easy ch!

The Ring Nebula is perhaps one of the most “popular” attractions in the sky, having been photographed on numerous occasions with virtually all telescopes capable of resolving it. By combining optical and near-infrared data of the formation, also known under the astronomical designation M57, experts at the Calar Alto Observatory (CAO), in Spain, managed to obtain a new view of it that presented the planetary nebula in a new light. According to AlphaGalileo, this is a unique photograph of the space structure. The image captures not only the central zones of the nebula and its halo, but also a massive number of stars around it, and a huge number of background galaxies, each located at various distances from M57. Experts at the institution say that the photo is part of the Documentary Photo Gallery of Calar Alto Observatory, and that it is the first to be released after the recent image of the Owl Nebula. The two celestial structures are similar in many aspects, but most !
notably in that they are both members of the same class of nebulas. A planetary nebula is formed by stars no larger than eight times the mass of our Sun. They are unable to explode as novas or supernovas, therefore, towards the end of their burning cycles, they emit a lot of their internal matter as stellar winds. After an ad...

We’re all constantly looking for ways to turn back the hands of time, whether it’s by using better cosmetic products or by paying thousands of dollars in a lifetime to dermatologists or, depending on the case, to plastic surgeons. London-based French cosmetic doctor Daniel Sister has just the answer to help us in our quest for eternal youth â€" or the closest to it â€" and it’s in our own blood. The S3 Therapy, or Stimulated Self Serum skin therapy, is not a new concept, although it might sound as such. It implies drawing one’s blood, separating red cells from the clear serum and the platelets, enriching it with vitamins and other nutrients and then injecting it back into the face to help stimulate DNA repair, banish wrinkles and spots, and overall improve skin appearance considerably. Since the procedure basically means injecting one’s face with one’s blood, it’s no wonder it’s also referred to as the “Dracula therapy,” relying on blood for rejuvenation!

The introduction of a universal phone charger seems to be closer than previously expected, with the latest news on the matter pointing towards the second half of the next year as the timeframe when it becomes available. Currently, each handset vendor delivers its own charger for the phones it puts on sale on the market, yet 2010 will bring a universal charger to the table, at least when it comes to the Australian market. According to a recent article on SmartHouse, some handset manufacturers have already confirmed the upcoming availability of the charger. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has agreed with the new charger, and vendors like Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, and Nokia are set to deliver it to the Australian market. It might also help reduce the annual greenhouse gas emissions by 13.6m tons. “This is a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of mobile charging. Universal chargers are a common-sense solution that I look forward to seeing i!

Aldo Liguori, spokesperson for Sony Ericsson, told BBC that, “We are planning to launch the universal charger internationally during the first half of 2010. Most sane people consider being in a bad mood as, well, a bad thing, and try to get out of it, by any means at their disposal. But, according to a group of scientists from Australia, that may not be necessarily the best idea possible. In a new study they conducted, they showed the fact that people who were sad, or generally in the worst mood possible, were also more keen in their judgment of others, were more likely to experience memory boosts, and were also less gullible. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) team, which was led by Psychology Professor Joseph Forgas, also showed another interesting thing. When people were in a bad mood, they were inclined to pay much more attention to their environment than usual, and also to be more critical of a person or event than usual, Reuters reports. Conversely, in the case of happy test subjects, the participants to the new experiments were far more likely to believe a number of statements the scientists made, even though the!
y weren't necessarily true. “Whereas positive mood seems to promote creativity, flexibility, cooperation, and reliance on mental shortcuts, negative moods trigger more attentive, careful thinking paying greater attention to the external world. Over the past few years, lasers have become indispensable scientific instruments, which are used for a variety of tasks, ranging from measuring the distance from the Earth to the Moon and analyzing air composition, to offering a focal point for the active optics systems in modern telescopes. But, when firing a high-power laser into the atmosphere, you also need to ensure that it doesn't hit any airplanes. This is important to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), and a number of ground rules exists, Technology Review reports. For example, when a laser fires upwards, an observer needs to be on the lookout, scouting for incoming planes at all times. If the spotter sees an aircraft approaching within less than 25 degrees from the laser light, the experiment needs to be stopped, so as to avoid any accidents. But scientists at the University of California in San Diego (UCSD) were not content with this system, which can, indeed, result in a number of mistakes, and decided to cr!
eate an automated one. In the new approach, the UCSD team proposes the use of two antennas, one with a broad beam, and the other with a narrow one, to spot for incoming aircraft. Both instruments need to be aligned with the laser beam, and the difference in signal strength between them dictates the speed of the incoming airplane, ...

Adam Lambert and Drake LaBry, who’ve been dating quietly for months now, have decided to put an end to their romance so that the American Idol runner-up can focus on his career. There was no fighting, no tension, and no messy breakup, and the two still remain very good friends, Radar Online has learned. [admark=1]Although they’ve been plagued by breakup rumors for almost an entire month, sources close to the former couple insist the end was amicable. Adam, it seems, has come to the conclusion that he can’t do both as well as he’d like to (meaning, tend to his love life and see to his career, which is just now to receive an incredible boost with the release of his debut album), so he chose to break it off with LaBry to avoid further heartache. “Adam Lambert and Drake LaBry have called it quits. Radar Online saw the end coming when we witnessed a tiff between the two October 9 when they were out partying in Hollywood. Still, it appears that the break-up has been as!
amicable as these things can be in Hollywood. The American Idol runner-up and Drake, an interior designer, are both extremely well-liked and their relationship was always low-key,” Radar writes of the now-defunct romance. Lambert’s debut album, “For Your Entertainment,” is set for release i...

--------
The music business is changing and there's nothing that anyone can do, including the huge music labels, to stop that. However, while the record labels try to cling on to their dying business model, yet another study shows that those who download music illegally are also the ones who spend more on it. A lot more, it turns out, £77 per year on music, compared with the £33 those who claim that they don't obtain music illegally spend. The study, commissioned by Demos, would indicate that the music business' apparently worst enemies are, in fact, its biggest fans. The survey questioned 1,000 people in the UK on their music habits and spending and found that only ten percent admitted they had downloaded music illegally. However, those ten percent spent more than double on music each year than those who only acquired it legally. The study is especially important in the UK, where there are talks of introducing a “three-strikes” law to kick repeated file-sharers off the Inte!
rnet. “The latest approach from the Government will not help prop up an ailing music industry. Politicians and music companies need to recognise that the nature of music consumption has changed, and consumers are demanding lower prices and easier access,” Demos' Peter Bradwell said. There are a few...

--------
Microsoft released Windows 7 to manufacturing on July 22nd, 2009, and then the operating system to the general public on October 22nd. But this does in no way mean that work on the platform stopped. In fact, as soon as it signed off on the Windows 7 code, the Redmond company moved forward with work on the first major upgrade for the Windows client, Service Pack 1. Wzor indicated that the software giant was planning to finalize the first Beta for Windows 7 SP1 by the end of this year, and to release the service pack to manufacturing in the summer of 2010 (via Neowin). According to Wzor, Microsoft has been hard at work on Windows 7 SP1 since the end of September 2009. Early adopters that have test-driven Windows 7 ahead of RTM might remember that the Redmond company shipped a few interim pre-final builds of Windows Vista’s successor that already contained Service Pack 1. To this day, Microsoft has offered little explanation as to why it integrated SP1 into Windows 7 before!
the product was finalized, but all indications point to the fact that the company was simply testing the service-pack delivery and integration mechanism. According to existing plans, Microsoft looks to finalize Windows 7 Beta 1 ahead of Christmas 2009. At the start of 2010, members of the company’s Technology Adoptio...

Search engine giant Google has been rumored a few times before to plan coming to the market with a handset developed by itself, yet it seems that the company has now stepped up and denied those sayings. Google is not into the phone-making business, according to Andy Rubin, head of Android development.“We're not making hardware,” is what Rubin stated, as Cnet indicates. “We're enabling other people to build hardware.” Rubin's sayings follow the recent rumors that Google would be planning the launch of its own Android-based mobile phone, and that the said device would be set to come to the market before the end of the ongoing year. Google is already known to have had something to do with the development of previously released Android-powered mobile phones, such as the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1), yet appears that the company's implication in hardware development will not go beyond that. It seems that designing an entire phone, and bringing it to the market would mark “a!
fundamental shift” in Google's approach towards the mobile phone market, something that it is not ready to make at the moment, according to Rubin. What Google seems to have in mind when it comes to mobile phones is what it already does: volume licensing and a close work with handset makers and wireless carriers f...

It seems that Pete Edwards was horribly misunderstood when he talked about his view on the PlayStation Home at the moment and what his plans of development were for it. Sony felt the need to clarify the general impression that was flying around after the director of the PS Home had been misquoted as saying that Home was "not a priority right now but there is a business model there." The confusion was made during the London Games Conference last week, when Edwards spoke on the social environment of the PlayStation platform. According to a post made on the official Home forums, a community manager stated that, "The coverage of what Pete Edwards said at the London Games Conference was not only a misquote, it was a misrepresentation of what he actually said." He further added that, "Edwards was saying that monetizing Home was not as big a priority as building a great platform, with a compelling environment and a strong community. Home is still a top priority for Sony and will!
continue to release quality content and provide a positive experience to our users." So, all of you Sony users that feared your Home experience would decline in quality can now sleep better at night, snuggled in your room, made to resemble the PlayStation one. HTTP:: Twitter Users Have Created 6 5 Million Lists So Far
--------
Twitter Lists were rolled out over the weekend to all users and they've proven a huge success so far. Maybe it's the fact that Twitter implements important features like this one very, very slowly, or maybe it's just the fact that the feature is proving very useful to most users. It's probably a combination of the two, but, in any case, there are about 6.5 million lists created so far and it's already showing a different picture on just who's influential on the microblogging platform and who isn't. Twitter doesn't provide any useful numbers related to the Lists feature, but a specific Google search, as the Next Web blog reports, shows that the number of Lists URLs is getting close to the 6.5-million mark. These, of course, are just the public Lists but, seeing how Twitter makes sure that every page on the site has a very SEO-friendly URL, which can't really be said about the rest of the site, the number is accurate enough. It will be interesting to see how the feature ev!
olves over time and if users will begin to see the number of people that lists them as important as the number of their followers, or even more so, but, so far, it has shown a rather interesting side of Twitter, proving that a huge number of followers doesn't necessarily translate into relevance. The ImpactWatch blog decided to see...

Anthony Aristar, a professor of linguistics at the Eastern Michigan University, and Lyle Campbell, also a professor of linguistics and the director of the Center for American Indian Languages (CAIL) at the University of Utah have recently decided to organize the world's first-ever workshop featuring a large number of experts on defunct or nearly extinct languages and dialects. Between November 12-14, about 50 international experts will catalog endangered and dying languages, in a large database that could be used for reference in the future.Chances are very high that, within a few decades, dying languages will completely die out, and that very few experts will struggle with the dialects. Most likely, only the most important extinct mother tongues, such as Latin and old Greek, will remain in use, while obscure African and Asian dialects will fade from memory. The goal of the Endangered Languages Information and Infrastructure workshop is precisely to prevent that from happen!

HTTP:: Rockstar Releases the Adults Only Version of Manhunt 2
--------
Just like the first Manhunt, the second installment in the series was mainly based on violence and gore. The original Manhunt followed the story of a convicted and officially executed criminal that was saved from the death penalty only to partake in a violent and sinister hunt for his fellow man. Set as the prey in an isolated environment monitored by video cameras, James Earl Cash had to deliver an entertaining performance for the puppet master behind the scenes. In a kill-or-be-killed world, the player was encouraged to perform the most gruesome executions to advance from level to level. Manhunt 2 followed the same general guidelines, as it placed the gamer in the shoes of Dr. Daniel Lamb as he awakened in the Dixmor Insane Asylum for the Criminally Insane. The gameplay saw an improvement from the first title, with a far more versatile and maneuverable character, as well as the introduction of firearms in the executions. The game, as well as its predecessor, stirred !
a huge amount of controversy due to their extremely violent nature. As such, Manhunt 2 originally received an Adult Only rating from the ESRB and forced Rockstar to delay it. In order to obtain a more manageable M-rating, the title had to cut a few corners and reduce the amount of visual detail and violence involved.

Evernote Corporation has released Evernote 1.5.2, an update to its cross-platform, remembering application. Evernote allows users to easily capture information in any environment, employing various platforms, and makes the information accessible and searchable at any time, anywhere. Evernote is a service + application available in both free and paid form. Using the desktop app, you can tag your new additions, or add small notes to them, after which they are easily searchable. Evernote's flagship feature is its ability to read text inside images using the "text-recognition" technology. It can even read handwritten notes, so, basically, all you have to do is just search for an item inside Evernote just the way you remember it. The new Mac OS X release of Evernote, version 1.5.2 build 62233, fixes a bug that caused some notebooks created before version 1.5.1 to appear to contain no notes. The update also makes search results more consistent with the Evernote service. Include!

Bandwidth throttling has become a fact of life for many Internet users and it's one of the major issues at heart of the net-neutrality debate. Most users don't like the practice, but ISPs say they are forced to do this because of network congestion. Now, uTorrent, the most popular BitTorrent client built by BitTorrent Inc., wants to meet ISPs halfway with the latest 2.0 version, still in beta, by enabling a form of throttling at the application level. The latest uTorrent comes with support for a new implementation of the BitTorrent protocol, created by the company behind uTorrent, called uTP, which was designed to lower bandwidth consumption, even if it means slowing down its own traffic. With the new protocol, the client will be able to detect chokes in the network and will bring down its own consumption, hopefully alleviating the problem. This should, in theory, if implemented on a large-enough scale, create huge savings for the ISPs. It is great for the network and po!
ssibly the other users, who get a better speed, but it does mean slower downloads and uploads for uTorrent. BitTorrent Inc. says that, in practice, it's mostly the upload speed that gets affected, seeing how this is usually smaller than the download speed for most DSL or cable connections. While some may worry that this...

Nature is the most potent source of inspiration for just about every aspect of human activity, from painting and music to nanotechnology and, apparently, underwater biomimetic probes. Two experts at the Michigan State University (MSU) have recently taken it upon themselves to create robotic fish, made out of advanced materials, and that could patrol the water as if they were the real deal. This could finally provide scientists with footage and images from within fish schools, or from other locations where even the simple human presence is enough to disrupt the natural activities. In charge of the investigation are Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Xiaobo Tan, and Kellogg Biological Station Assistant Professor of Zoology Elena Litchman. The Office of Naval Research and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) had funded the two researchers' individual work, even before they decided to team up on the new project.
