In popular culture, there are certainly a lot of iconic franchises that have gathered a huge number of fans all around the world. From titles like Star Wars to The Simpsons, such series spanned different entertainment mediums and delivered some of the best experiences in the world. One very popular example is Star Trek, which started off as a tongue-in-cheek TV series documenting the travels of the space ship Enterprise and its crew. Since then, it has been entertaining many generations and delivering some unforgettable moments in various spin-offs and even video games.Speaking of games, one of the more recent ones is Star Trek: Tactical Assault, developed by Quicksilver Software and published by Bethesda Softworks for the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. It appeared in North America on November 14, 2006, and then in Europe on December 1.Set to focus on space battles in the Star Trek universe, the game delivers two fully playable campaigns, one under the banner of the F!
ederation, the other serving the Klingon Empire. Each battle will see the player take command of a warship and engage the enemy until only one is left standing. The Wi-Fi features of the DS weren't neglected by the developers, as the Multiplayer modes are extremely well polished, feat...

Also known as SRK, Bollywood icon Shahrukh Khan has found himself “detained” at New Jersey’s Liberty International Airport over the weekend for a “secondary inspection,” which has prompted the Indian media to cry out racism and to point the finger at the high levels the paranoia has reached in the US. SRK was unlawfully detained because of his religion and his name, Times of India says, asking for American celebrities to be treated the same way. It was all just a big misunderstanding, US authorities tell Fox News. Khan might not be a well-known name in the US film industry, but back home, he is considered the “George Clooney / Brad Pitt of Bollywood.” With an impressive track record of over 70 movies and an incredibly large fanbase, Khan is an icon, so it’s no wonder millions of people back home got fuming mad when they heard about his unjustified “detention” on American soil. Moreover, Times of India says, perhaps having authorities there doing the sam!
e to US stars wouldn’t probably be that absurd either, if one were to consider that this is not the first time an Indian celebrity is being detained without reason. And this is precisely what happened, the publication points out. “It is not clear why Khan, who ...

Electronic Arts is one of the biggest publishers in the gaming industry and has made a name for itself by shamelessly releasing yearly iterations of its core franchises like Need For Speed, FIFA or Madden NFL and charging gamers full price even though the titles didn't bring any new and important things. But in recent years, things have started to change for EA, as it doesn't rely that much on yearly iterations of old franchises, instead trying to promote new and interesting projects. One of them is Battlefield Heroes, which, although relying on a popular franchise from EA, is a browser-based third person action game completely free to play. When it was first announced, analysts weren't very confident in EA, considering that because it would be basing its profit opportunities on micro transactions from players, not a lot of money would be made. But it seems that they were quite wrong, with EA revealing to the public that up until now Battlefield Heroes managed to rake in !
up to $30 million. The game is also extremely popular with the fans, as it has 1.5 million registered players around the world, from almost 133 different countries. Almost 3 quarters of those players came from only 10 countries though: the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Russia,...

Nintendo is one of the biggest video game companies in the world, owning a lot of extremely profitable and popular franchises, from the likes of Mario, The Legend of Zelda, or Metroid. But another highly successful, yet not that well-known, is Star Fox.Introduced during the 2006 edition of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game reached Nintendo's native Japan on August 3, North America on August 28, and Europe on January 26, 2007. It was developed by Q-Games and published by Nintendo in all of the aforementioned territories.“Star Fox Command isn't intended as a redesign of the series; it is the merged outcome of combining the Star Fox franchise with the Nintendo DS and its special features,” its creators said. “There was no intention to take it to the strategic level of Advance Wars, as Star Fox has always been very much a pick-up-and-play kind of game. Capcom is one of the most influential game developers and publishers in Japan, owning a huge amount of extremely popular franchises, from Street Fighter to Resident Evil to Mega Man or even Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. But the company has also made a name for itself in the fighting game genre by collaborating with the likes of SNK or, more recently, the Tatsunoko anime studios on Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. The game will see various characters from different anime series go up against various famous fighters from Capcom. But even though the company has a huge roster of potential fighters, the producer of the game, Ryota Niitsuma, revealed that there was also a plan to include famous attorney Phoenix Wright in the title. The idea was soon dropped because he didn't have any potential for decisive and simple attacks, as was the appearance of his assistant, Franziska von Karma. “Because Phoenix Wright only has one move, 'Objection!', we struggled. We designed a move for him: whe!

As avid Softpedia readers should know by now, Apple is widely believed to have given the order for mass production of Snow Leopard install discs. Last week’s Build 10A432, claimed to be the Golden Master edition of the software, is seemingly arriving even sooner than expected. So, why not greet Snow Leopard with some software that can really make it work fast? Launched after Apple’s transition to Intel processors, Rosetta is a lightweight dynamic translator for the Mac. Distributed with Mac OS X, it enables applications compiled for the PowerPC family of processors to run on Intel processors. If you skip installing Rosetta in Snow Leopard, some of your PowerPC-only apps may not work anymore. On the other hand, if you do install Rosetta, those apps will work, but they will have a slower performance than their universal binary counterparts, because Rosetta takes its toll on the CPU to do instruction translations. So, the best logical choice is to update those apps to Un!
iversal Binary. Not all of them will have their Universal counterpart, but most will. Years have passed since the transition from PowerPC to Intel, so most developers (and implicitly their software) have gone Universal. To check which of your apps are PowerPC-only, fire up System Profiler and go to the “...

Pingie: HTTP:: Arctic Sea Bed Releases Methane Gas

HTTP:: Arctic Sea Bed Releases Methane Gas
--------
In addition to carbon dioxide, the main gas held responsible for global warming, methane, is one of the most potent agents that can bring about climate change. Efforts of reducing emissions exist, but they are insufficient. To make matters worse, it has been recently confirmed that the gas escapes its Arctic sea-bed trap at an alarming rate. Its effects on the climate could be devastating, if efforts to reduce these amounts of released gas are not intensified, experts say, quoted by the BBC News. In a new scientific study, it was determined that about 250 plumes of methane came out of the ground at locations in the sea bed off the coasts of Norway. The methane is released following a vicious cycle. As more and more CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere, the growing temperatures heat up the Arctic ices, melting them, and allowing the methane trapped between frozen water crystals to escape in the atmosphere. This, in turn, leads to even more heating, which continuously acceler!
ates the release process, scientists believe. According to the joint German and British research team analyzing the plumes off West Spitsbergen, the methane comes from depths ranging from 150 to 400 meters below sea level. Details of the team's investigations appear in the latest issue of the respected journal Geophysical Research Letters. Metha...

Word of former Mr. Britney Spears Kevin Federline trying to land a deal for his own reality show has been around ever since he divorced his more famous ex-spouse. Rumors have only intensified in recent months, when K-Fed’s obvious weight gain prompted speculation of the nature of said alleged reality show. Now, although not picked up by any network, Federline has already started working on the show, Now Magazine claims. Initially, it was believed K-Fed would do a reality show documenting his supposedly long journey to his former fit shape, as also noted above. Then, rumors said that he was to have cameras back in his life to focus on a side of him that the media had rarely, if ever, seen: that of a doting and loving dad, presumably only to the two boys he had with Britney Spears. On this note, Federline has already started shooting the first scenes, even if his show has yet to be picked by any network. “Kevin Federline has started shooting a reality TV show about bei!

Video games can tackle a wide range of genres, from shooters, in either first- or third-person view, to intricate, role-playing or racing titles. But, sometimes, in an effort to find innovation and to “break” the market, some developers try more unorthodox approaches. Such is the case with Guillemot Inc., which is responsible for the dating simulator Sprung. The title, which was published by Ubisoft, appeared on December 8, 2004 in North America and reached European shores on March 11, the next year. The purpose of the game is to meet up, flirt and eventually hook up with other people, depending on one's genre. The location is at a remote winter resort called Snowbird Mountain, where players can interact with other characters and complete all of the 50 dating missions included in the main story. From interacting with drama queens and kings to more normal characters, Sprung promises a great story, penned by Colleen McGuinnes from the famous TV series North Shore. “W!

i.TV has announced what the company calls the “i.TV Remote Control Framework.” The framework enables third-party devs to develop solutions for controlling external devices (television, an AV receiver or DVR) via i.TV on the iPhone and iPod touch. These remote capabilities are now coming to the iPhone and iPod touch via a software update to the existing i.TV app. The TiVo remote is the first integrated remote control on i.TV for TiVo subscribers with a broadband-connected TiVo DVR, the company has confirmed. The iPhone app has been sent to Apple for approval and should appear in the App Store any day now. i.TV reveals that the service now combines the TV guide and the remote control on an iPhone or iPod touch, with remote controls powered by the i.TV Remote Control Framework. Users will be able to change the channel, fast-forward, record and play their favorite shows and movies. The app also has a simplified and streamlined user interface. Tons of other enhancements w!
ere made, including the addition of push notifications - “Set alerts for when your favorite TV shows air. Never miss a show again,” i.TV enthusiastically states. “With i.TV, you can now use your iPhone or iPod touch as a remote control for televisions, DVRs and other home entertainment...

HTTP:: Dogs Cannot Read Owners 039 Minds Study Shows
--------
A new scientific study finds that, in spite of having lived close to humans for the last several tens of millennia, dogs are utterly unable to read a person's mind. The recent experiments focused on the behavior of dogs, which proved that they still trusted unreliable people. The finds again hammer down the so-called canine “theory of mind,” which was originally meant to be an equivalent to the human one, which can more easily be evidenced, ScienceNow informs. If scientists ask a small child, for instance, if their mother knows where they hid a toy, they will answer “yes,” because, at a small age, they believe their mother knows everything they know. As kids grow up, they begin to realize that, in fact, parents can only know what they see, in very much the same way they do. And so, before the age of seven, the child will answer the scientists' question by saying “No, my mom does not know where the toy is.” This is the essence of the human “theory of mind.â€!
Experts have been trying to apply the same principles to animals as well, but that has proven to be very difficult. Back in the late 1970s, some researchers claimed that they had managed to obtain some sort of proof of this in chimpanzee studies, but work conducted by peers demonstrated less conclusive ...

--------
Time and time again, “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson has insisted that he is anything but a celebrity, finding it increasingly hard to deal with the media attention and the sometimes exaggerated reaction from certain fans. The latest sit-down with The Daily Record is no different, from this perspective, with the British star reiterating that fame can be a burden he does not know how to carry just yet, that “Twilight,” the Internet and Twitter have changed his life completely and that he is simply just a shy, discrete person, who doesn’t know what to do with himself in huge crowds. One of the many things that fans ironically love about Pattinson is precisely a certain sense of unwillingness that he gives off as to speaking of his own person because, on the rare occasions when he does, he is extremely frank, perhaps like few other celebs whether of his age or not. Pattinson, while grateful for how “Twilight” put him on the map, is still a bit lost about !
how to behave when fans start screaming his name, as well as confused about his still-soaring popularity. Of course, that’s not to say that he would want to disappear off the face of the Earth. “I can’t remember what my normal life is like. Because of internet stuff and Twi...

--------
Originally developed by Yoel Inbar and then handed over to Aric Freisen, Fetch Art is a Mac OS X application for adding cover art to your music in iTunes. The application is extremely useful for music fans, as well as for casual listeners. If you've ripped music from your own CDs and iTunes doesn’t have the art for them, Fetch Art for iTunes can find it for you. Fetch Art for iTunes is capable of fetching album art for one or more songs using Amazon's XML interface. The app lets users preview the art that was found, and add it to iTunes. Fetch Art is controlled through the iTunes Script menu, meaning that, once it is installed, album art can be downloaded by selecting one or more songs in iTunes. Users must choose 'Fetch Art' from the Script menu. With version 2.5.0 having arrived, developer Aric Freisen gladly announces that he has added support for Amazon's new Web Services. “As of August 15 2009, any version of Fetch Art prior to 2.5.0 will stop working as Amazon c!

Super Talent Technology, one of the world's leading vendors of Flash-based storage products and DRAM memory modules, has announced today the launch of its new, very low profile (VLP) DDR3-1333 Registered DIMM, specifically designed to meet the performance and design requirements of today's server systems. The new modules are targeted at servers built inside compact and low-profile enclosures, providing them with the performance of the latest DDR3 memory technology.“We made this product for high density servers and embedded computers where space inside the chassis is severely constrained,” explained Super Talent Director of Marketing Joe James. “VLP modules also make sense in 1U servers since their small stature improves airflow inside the chassis.”According to the technical specifications of these new modules from Super Talent, customers will be able to take advantage of the performance enabled by the DDR3 memory chips, on a registered module that is only 0.72 inche!

One of the most important franchises for both Microsoft and its Xbox 360 console is Halo, which was originally developed by Bungie and purchased by the large corporation. It went on to produce a few award-winning video games for the platform and the company is bent on developing it for other types of media. That is why there are multiple projects underway, including a Halo movie, which reputed film makers Peter Jackson and Neil Blompkamp were working on. That project was terminated though, but, according to recent rumors, another famous Hollywood director, Steven Spielberg, will take the helm of the Halo movie and deliver a great experience. !

According to media reports, a Tunisian teacher is about to break OctoMom's record of octuplets, as she is reportedly pregnant with 12 babies. The news came as a shock to everyone, and, if it verifies, it could be that this number is among the highest ever recorded in case of an in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure. The same reports indicate that the woman, who is in her 30s, is expecting six girls and six boys, all at once, the Daily Mail informs. The outlet informs that the woman resorted to IVF methods of getting pregnant because she suffered two miscarriages over the past two years and she really wanted to have children. Multiple fertilizations are common when this type of fertilization is involved, but such a high number of babies is very rare, experts say, adding that there are serious dangers involved with such a pregnancy. Health specialists in the United Kingdom say that there is less than a one-in-100 chance that even a single baby of the Tunisian woman will !

When stickers, for instance, are taped to windows or doors, they eventually form blisters. Sunlight hitting them directly also deforms and distorts their colors, until they eventually fall off. While strolling through the corridors of the Edgerton Center, in Building 4 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Department of Mathematics instructor Pedro Reis noticed the bending plastics, and found the phenomenon interesting. The ensuing research may offer new hints on how to construct stretchable and bendable electronics, Technology Review informs. “It's something that's around you all the time â€" but if you look at it [in] a different way you can see something new,” Reis says of an MIT logo that he saw slowly peeling away from a glass door. Together with scientists from the French National Center for Scientific Research, the mathematics instructor analyzed heat-induced blistering and peeling, a process known as delamination, which mostly occurs at the contac!
t zone between a thin film and the surface to which it is attached (such as stickers on glass). In addition to the heat, the team already knew that another factor that triggered delamination was related to whether the surface on which the film was attached was compressed. When this happens, they say, the film bends ...

Michael Jackson has not yet been buried, despite the fact that almost seven weeks have gone by since he passed away. The late King of Pop will be buried on what should have been his 51st birthday, on August 29, Joe tells the New York Daily News. Word in the tabloid media has it that the funeral has been postponed for so long not only because of the pending LAPD investigation into the causes of Michael’s death, but also on account of the fact that the family could not come to an understanding as to the burial place itself. One reason for that is the fact that some Jacksons don’t want the grave to turn into a touristic attraction, it has been said, but that no longer seems to be the case, as Joe is very specific about the location and the time t!

When surgeons in modern operating rooms are faced with shattered bones, they do not have too many repair options. The most widely used method of treating the damage is to attach the various fragments to each other using small screws, which are left there until most of the bone heals by itself. They are removed afterwards, but traces of their presence still linger. Now, investigators propose using an adhesive derived from sandcastle worms, which apparently has the ability to glue two fragments together as effective as the screws, Technology Review informs. According to the team that presented the idea at the latest annual meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), held in Washington DC, the new glue is strong enough to get the bone through the recovery period, and could thus become the surgeons' tool of choice in treating open fractures and shattered bones in the future. The challenge with similar compounds has thus far been the fact that it has proven to be immensely!
difficult to devise an adhesive that can stick bones and other wet materials, without it dissolving in the surrounding liquid. Researchers from the University of Utah, led by biomedical engineer Russell Stewart, the lead researcher on the new study, found their inspiration in the tiny sandcastle worms. Over recent years, astronomers have expressed their amazement at the fluxes of electrons and their antimatter counterparts, the positrons, that were recorded throughout the Milky Way. They tried to explain these occurrences by saying that the positrons could be produced by dark matter, but a new investigation sheds light on the origin of these elementary particles. The actual origin of these elements seems to be in the throes of a dying star, which eliminates all sorts of peculiar radiation it does not normally emit, AlphaGalileo reports. The new investigation was conducted by an international team of astrophysicists, which included the Bochum junior professor Dr. Julia Becker and the Dortmund physicist professor Dr. Wolfgang Rohde. They reveal that massive stars, with masses at least fifteen times that of our own Sun, are the most likely source for the peculiar emissions of positrons and electrons. In a recent study, published in the latest issue of the respected journal!
Physical Review Letters, the team explain how their theory is in tune with astronomical observations of these fluxes, carried out over the last few years. The reason why the origin and characteristics of these small particles could not be detected through direct experimentation is the fact that both types suffer massive interference...

In our own solar system, assessing the differences between planets and stars is a fairly easy procedure. We look at the Sun, and then at Jupiter or Saturn (the largest planets), and the difference is immediately obvious. But things are not as simple in the Universe. Astronomers have discovered over the years exoplanets that simply blur the difference between a planet and a star, to the point where defining a star as a celestial body that can sustain thermonuclear reactions is no longer enough. Some experts believe that these new bodies may represent the “missing link” between stars and planets, Space reports. “Taken together, these discoveries are going to change what we call a planet. Until now people have been arguing about how big can an object be and still be a planet,” Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) astrophysicist Sara Seager says. Some of the exoplanets that have been spotted through ground- or orbit-based telescopes are so large that they dwarf!
Jupiter, a gas giant that makes the Earth look like a grain of sand in solar orbit. The most hazy definitions of stars and planets revolve around the formations known as brown dwarfs. Experts from the University of Sheffield, in the UK, the Ecole Normale Superieure, in Paris, France, and the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, in Germany, have recently developed a new type of quantum dot, which is finally able to confirm a long-standing, but never verified theory. The idea states that electrons trapped in such structures live for much longer than other electrons â€" as in take longer to revert to their ground state once they have been excited â€" because they have very few ways of losing their energies. While this has been inferred for quite some time now, actually proving the concept has remained an elusive goal for science, until now, AlphaGalileo reports. Experts have also wondered why the trapping of electrons was never recorded via observation methods. The explanation for that might be that the well-known theory describing the loss of energy of electrons to lattice vibrations (phonons) is not applicable to quantum dots, because of the strong con!
finement of the electrons. They couple with phonons, and give birth to strongly coupled structures called polarons. The main achievement of the latest research effort was creating a quantum dot whose properties allowed for the rigid analysis of the electrons within, through existing scientific methods. One of the most proficient franchises in the genre is Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor series, which has entertained people through various recreations of famous World War II scenarios. A lot of consultants were brought in and the project really took off thanks to input from former Delta commanders and documentary directors which have had first hand combat experience.
