With today’s digital cameras offering options to save pictures in digital camera RAW format, Apple provides system-level support for such formats in Mac OS X Leopard and adds new cameras with each incremental update to the operating system. Such is the case with Mac OS X 10.5.8, which adds camera support included with the latest Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update, version 2.6. In a Support document entitled “Mac OS X 10.5: Digital camera RAW formats supported” Apple offers Mac users a method to find out which digital camera RAW files are supported by Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later. “Many digital cameras offer options to save pictures in digital camera RAW format,” the Mac maker says. “Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto,” Apple explains. As such, “Mac OS X Leopard provides OS-wide support for various digital camera RAW formats.!
