Over recent years, Brazil has expressed its intention of becoming a regional, industrial powerhouse, especially in the field of electronics and related technologies. As such, the capital city of Santa Catarina State, Florianopolis, or Floripa, was considered to be the best place to locate this new center, which is touted to be similar to the United States' Silicon Valley. Ranked as one of the world's ten most dynamic cities, the economy of the 821,552-inhabitant-large city is based around information technology, tourism and services, the BBC News reports. Although many tourists come to the developing city in search of beautiful beaches and sunsets, the Brazilian government has other plans for the region. The $1.3-billion Sapiens Parque science park is to be constructed here. The project is part of a larger government initiative of promoting science and technology in the largest South American country. The overall plan is estimated to cost about $24 billion, experts say.
