HTTP:: Discovery to Carry RPI Experiment to the ISS
--------
Among the scientific experiments that will be taken to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the space shuttle Discovery, there is one that was designed by experts at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The experimental heat-transfer system will be installed aboard the station for a total of three years, after which time it will be brought back on Earth, for analysis. The project is called the Constrained Vapor Bubble (CVB).The new instrument could provide a better understanding of processes involving the nature of heat and mass transfer operations, such as evaporation, condensation, and boiling. The reason why it will be different from other similar experiments is the fact that it will take place outside the Earth's atmosphere, in microgravity, and under precisely controlled lab conditions, its creators say. Results collected with the CVB could also lead to the development of new cooling systems for spacecraft and other orbital structures in the future. âœA!
fter years of hard work to advance this project to its current state, I am very excited to see our Constrained Vapor Bubble make its way into space and onto the International Space Station,â 1956 Rensselaer graduate and Professor Emeritus in the RPI Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering...

HTTP:: Analyzing Tremors 039 Impact on Buildings

Earthquakes usually take only a few seconds to bring down even the most solid buildings, if their epicenter is close enough to the structures. Knowing precisely what is happening in the first seconds when a tremor hits, as far as the structural integrity of the building goes, is therefore a huge goal for engineers and architects. This could help them work together so that, in the future, the number of victims that fall prey to sudden earthquakes is reduced to a minimum. Testing the effect of earthquakes in real-life situations, such as actually building a several-story construction on a mobile plate, and beginning to shake it, is in most cases a prohibitively expensive endeavor, which cannot be supported by anyone. Such was the case of a collaboration of American and Japanese researchers, from the University of Buffalo and the Kyoto University, which tried out a hybrid approach at studying tremors and buildings. âœOne of the key issues in earthquake engineering is how much!
damage structures can sustain before collapsing so people can safely evacuate. We don't really know the answer because testing buildings to collapse is so difficult. With this hybrid approach, it appears that we have a safe, economic way to test realistic buildings at large scales to collapse,â UB As...

In its long run, âœBig Brotherâ saw record ratings in the UK, turning faded celebrities into overnight stars again and generating profits estimated at around £70 million a year. However, as all good things, it too must come to an end, and it will do so after next yearâ™s season is over, after the tenth season pulled in disastrous ratings of just two million, The Sun says. Channel 4, the network carrying the show, claims the cancellation is based on creativity considerations, and not financial ones. Sources close to the network are telling the British tabloid that even staff working at Channel 4 are âœboredâ with âœBig Brother,â not to mention the audiences, who could in no way be convinced to watch the most recent season. They say the cancellation comes because the network is no longer seeing the show as a profitable business, therefore it will invest the money in something else, perhaps in a bunch of new series, an allegation that a spokesperson for Channel 4 !

Many people believe that things such as teleportation, invisibility cloaks and time travel pertain only to science-fiction movies and books, but renowned theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku believes that they may be a lot closer than we think. The expert, who collaborated in creating the string theory, reveals that all these concepts, which have been widely circulated in literature and in Hollywood, are in fact in agreement with the modern laws of physics, and therefore possible, the BBC News reports. In âœPhysics of the Impossible,â his most recent book, the scientist says that the only thing standing between humankind and these seemingly impossible devices is time. That is to say, there are no clear technological obstacles that stand between us and time travel, for instance. Ed Wardle, a documentary maker, was supposed to survive twelve weeks in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a rifle, a fishing rod and a camera, but had to be emergency airlifted after only seven weeks after he sent a distress call, on the brink of starvation. As of now, Channel 4, the network for which Wardle was making Alone in the Wild, is being accused of exploitation and recklessness, the Telegraph informs. Wardle is an experimented documentary maker and has, so far, survived in the most hostile places, the British publication says, but he was not prepared and / or trained enough to survive this particular expedition. Because of this, the network, which initially simply wanted to stretch the limits of reality television to âœwhere no man has ever gone beforeâ stands to be accused of wanting to do so regardless of the person on whom it centers its shows â" in this case, Wardle. âœThis is a pretty foolish enterprise.
