HTTP:: Facebook Launches New Notifications and Inbox APIs
--------
Facebook is in the process of becoming more open both towards users, who are encouraged to post more public content, but also towards develops by providing them with increasingly powerful APIs that allow them to make better use of the site's capabilities and data. After launching a new Open Stream API last week, the site is now announcing two new APIs, spurring developers to create applications and features around Facebook's messaging and notification systems. “Today we are releasing the Inbox API so you can provide users with even more opportunities to interact with rich Facebook features within your applications. For example, a desktop application geared toward small business owners could enable users to check their company's Page stream, as well as read messages and receive notifications, all from their desktop,” Facebook's Ben Hiller wrote on the Developers Blog. “The notifications API lets your applications retrieve your users’ notifications to use within you!
r application.” The Inbox API opens up Facebook's messaging system to third-party developers, allowing applications, with the users' permission, to access the inbox and retrieve and display the messages. The API is read-only for now so outside apps can't send messages or interact with them in any way. This is ...

HTTP:: Facebook to Ban Sponsored Status Updates
--------
Facebook is proposing an updated Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR), basically the site's Terms of Service, and has made the upcoming version of it available for public scrutiny. The social network claims it's just a minor update but there are some changes that are bound to cause a stir, especially the explicit banning of sponsored status updates, which are becoming increasingly popular, for those publishing them anyway, especially on Twitter but also on Facebook. “The proposed SRR we're announcing today mostly includes clarifying changes and minor updates. We encourage you to read the revised SRR in its entirety on the Facebook Site Governance Page, where you can review the changes and give us your comments,“ the announcement reads. However, the revised SRR now clearly states: “You will not use your personal profile for your own commercial gain (such as selling your status update to an advertiser).“ This effectively bans services like Izea or Magpie,!
which pay users to create “sponsored” posts on blogs, Twitter and even Facebook, and is sure to make quite a few users happy. This type of services have been around for a while but are becoming increasingly used, especially on Twitter, where “sponsored tweets” are generating quite a backlash. These spo...

HTTP:: Michael Jackson Film Released on October 30
--------
Sony Pictures Entertainment and the Michael Jackson estate have been given a judge’s approval to release the footage shot during rehearsals for “This Is It” in theaters on October 30. According to the official press release, most of the footage has been shot in the weeks before the sudden death of the singer on June 25, and proceeds from the release will go mostly to Michael’s children and mother Katherine, Rolling Stone informs. As per the music publication, Sony had to agree to several conditions before being given permission to turn the almost 100 hours’ worth of footage into film. For starters, it had to offer guarantees to the Michael Jackson estate that the resulting film would not be longer than 150 minutes and that it would get a PG rating from the MPAA, and it delivered on both counts. Then, it had to assure the Jackson estate that it would not present the late singer in a negative light, with Sony agreeing to present it with a final cut before the Octob!
er 30 release for approval. “The world will see what our team was so fortunate to experience, which was the full commitment, passion and creativity that Michael put into this project. He was the architect of This Is It, and we were his builders. It will also show Michael as one of the greatest entertainers in the...

HTTP:: Perpetual Reboot for Failed Windows 7 RTM Upgrades from Vista RTM SP1 SP2
--------
In certain scenarios, a failed Windows Vista upgrade to Windows 7 can throw the computer into a perpetual cycle of restarts, Microsoft informed. The Redmond company did not offer specific details on the causes of a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade failure, but it did offer a workaround for end users affected by this specific issue to put a stop to the continual reboots. The KB article Microsoft supplied for this issue was published after the RTM of Windows 7, and it indicates that the problem impacts all editions of Vista RTM, SP1 and SP2. “When attempting to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the upgrade attempt may fail with the message “This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it." However, the next reboot of the machine will launch the upgrade process again only to fail with the same message,” the software giant informed. The perpetual reboots are caused by the way the compute!
r's Boot Configuration Database (BCD) store is modified in the Windows 7 upgrade process. While, the failed upgrade is capable of restoring the original Vista operating system before the jump to Windows 7 was attempted, it does not do the same with the BCD store. “Windows Vista ...

The well-known online pay service PayPal has recently announced the launch of a new account type called Student Account, a safer method for teenagers to make online payments when shopping online or in stores (using the Student Card), while also offering parents a wide range of supervising possibilities. The new account type is meant to reduce the hassle that both parents and teens go through every day when exchanging money and, additionally, will allow the youngsters to acquire healthy spending habits by having the chance to be responsible for their own budgets. Also, parents will be able to set up up to four PayPal sub-accounts for each of their teenagers, and can transfer money to these accounts whenever it is necessary, whether it is on a one-time or a repetitive basis. The accounts of the youngsters and of their parents will obviously be linked, so the latter can constantly monitor the former's financial balance, budgeting skills and spending habits. Moreover, the a!

HTTP:: 039 Block Island 039 Reveals Clues of Mars 039 Past
--------
In its trek on the surface of Mars, the rover Opportunity has recently come across an ancient meteor, made almost entirely out of metal, according to investigators at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in Pasadena, California. The peculiar formation is currently helping planetary scientists gain a deeper insight into the ancient environmental history of the planet, and Opportunity has taken a break from its long journey so that it can analyze it further. Opportunity's new object of interest, called Block Island, is among the largest meteorites thus far discovered on the Red Planet. Analyzing it poses some questions about the atmosphere, researchers say. They argue that a meteorite this size couldn't have entered it intact, and that it most likely broke off in several pieces. Unless, of course, the atmosphere was a lot thicker when it landed than it is estimated to be today. Additionally, experts hope to probe the rock for more details on how the climate has affected the r!
ock over the years. By the time pictures of the rock reached the Earth, some two weeks ago, the rover had already driven more than 600 feet passed it. Mission controllers were so puzzled by the appearance that they had the robot backtrack, and commanded it to start investigations. The probe even touched the meteorite with its robot...
